Shen Yin Wang Zuo, Chapter 363

Shen Yin Wang Zuo, Chapter 363: Test for Demon Hunt Squads of Commander grade (III)

Chen Ying’er gave a thumbs up, and said with a laugh, “So cool!”

The four examiners were still in a state of shock, while on the side of the 21st general grade Demon Hunt Squad, Cai’er slowly approached the center of the field.

The assassin examiner instantly narrowed his eyes. Being a veteran assassin, he could tell from Cai’er’s footsteps that this person wasn’t weak at all! And furthermore, the form had said that this person was their vice-captain.

The other three examiners nodded to the assassin examiner with energy, hinting that he had to recover their lost face.

The assassin examiner’s eyes were filled with a sharp glint, as he headed on the field with meticulous steps.

Cai’er’s hand flashed, and the green cane she used before appeared in her hand, before she indicated to that assassin examiner, “I am ready.”

The assassin felt enraged. Am I not being overly looked down at, to the point that she wants to handle me using this green rod?

Resisting the anger with difficulty, the examiner disappeared in a flash. This was the greatest Assassin ability of the sixth step, Invisibility.

Although an assassin would only be able to erase his presence completely after reaching the eighth step, the simple ability of disappearing in this way would give him a substantial gain in strength.

Facing the vanished assassin, Cai’er stood there motionless, just the same as a rock.

Suddenly, a shadow flashed in the air, and two black flashes entwined like dragons, aiming at Cai’er’s head from above.

Right at this time, Cai’er made her move. Seemingly, her shoulder only swayed slightly, before the original Cai’er turned into six.

There were exactly six of her now, and the six looked just as real as the original. More frighteningly, the six Cai’ers were actually all moving differently, and six green rods stabbed at six different places on the ground.

“Pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop…” Six sounds were heard almost instantly, and immediately afterwards, the figure of the assassin examiner appeared in midair, followed by an astounding scene. The six Cai’ers kept showing different movements, attacking from below as the six green canes formed a gapless net in the air.

Following next? The battle simply ended.

The back of the assassin examiner crashed violently to the ground as the six Cai’ers instantly merged into one. The green cane was pointed at his throat, before she immediately headed back towards her comrades.

The assassin examiner didn’t take his loss that hard. He rapidly stood up, but didn’t leave in such hurry as the warrior examiner, only asking eagerly, “Why is it that your Doppelganger divided into six versions of you? Even as a Stealth Master of the sixth step, I can only divide them into three myself? And there should be two fakes and a real one, but you… ”

Cai’er calmly replied, “I don’t have any obligation to tell you, and you cannot possibly accomplish the same.” At the time she said that, she already returned to Long Haochen’s side.

Lin Xin remarked in low voice, “Looks like her domineering side is being exposed once again!”

The examiners had even more unsightly expressions. Facing Demon Hunters who wanted to rise to the commander grade, being defeated was absolutely normal for them, but being defeated this fast wasn’t normal. And the opponents defeating them were far from their level of spiritual energy!

“Should be my turn.” After the tests for the three close quarter vocations, the mage should be the one following. But Lin Xin went as far as to advance with a happy and excited expression.

The mage examiner however didn’t have such a good look, and entered the stadium with a very alert expression.

At the time he saw the Fire Cloud Crystal in Lin Xin’s hand, his expression became unsightly. Mage equipment couldn’t be assessed easily by a mere glance, but the thickness of the elemental fluctuations coming out of Lin Xin’s staff already told a lot about how powerful it was. And it possessed a highly violent fire. This mage examiner had the sole thought, I cannot end up covered in soot!

As soon as Lin Xin said he was ready, this mage examiner rapidly used one defensive spell after another. Being of the wind element, he covered himself with green barriers and relied on his spiritual wings to soar in the sky. In the air, wind mages were the most agile of all.

To be frank, given how fast the last two tests concluded, it truly gave him a fright. The reason was principally the surprise of the Spiritual Stove of Spatial Gate belonging to Wang Yuanyuan, and the exceptional power of Cai’er’s Doppelgangers. Although the final result from fusing three spiritual stoves was only a boost of the Spiritual Stove of Samsara, this was after all a fusion between three spiritual stoves! With the addition of her great natural advantage in talent, she managed to create six clones, each possessing their own offensive capabilities. This was how the two of them were wronged in such way, but if they had been focused on defense, they would inevitably have at least put up a fight.

This mage examiner learned from the past lessons and was prepared to fight steadily and surely, at least to recover some face. However, the opponent he faced was Lin Xin, the mage unable to use any offensive magic. Seeing him being that defensive, Lin Xin was rejoicing. Lifting the Fire Cloud Crystal high, he started some chant. Soon, an intense fire elemental essence condensed frantically above his staff, giving off the false appearance of a mage about to use a powerful spell. And the mage examiner kept launching defensive spell after defensive spell, attempting to stop Lin Xin’s first round of attacks.

How could he know that Lin Xin actually wasn’t chanting any incantation, but only kept pouring magical power in his staff, preparing to launch a Fire Curse.

When an immense skull made of blue flames appeared, directly shooting towards the examiner, his only thought was to turn his head and run away.

After accumulating 5,000 units of spiritual energy in addition to the original amplification rate from Fire Curse, plus carrying the power of the fused Spiritual Stove, merged from the Heart of Flames and Spiritual Stove of Fire Phoenix, this thing was already something even a powerhouse of the seventh step wouldn’t dare to rashly meet head on. Moreover, Lin Xin gained a lot more compared for example with Wang Yuanyuan in the Illusory Paradise, or rather, was second to none in the team regarding the quantity of gains he got from there.

Finally, under Lin Xin’s control, the immense Fire Curse skull stopped in midair, and the mage examiner immediately admitted his defeat. Nonetheless, Lin Xin still overlooked something. After pouring almost all his spiritual energy into it, this thing was already uncontrollable, and finally, the Fire Curse exploded in the field. It’s huge explosive power struck both the mage examiner and Lin Xin, covering them in dirt from head to toes.

The three consecutive battles ended up as victories, and this gave a great boost to the morale of everyone from the 21st general grade Demon Hunt Squad. Following next, Sima Xian appeared on the field. He was their priest, their Red Cardinal.

Sima Xian’s opponent was the only female examiner. But when she saw the armored Sima Xian come to the field, her eyes filled with surprise.

“This is the priest test.” The female examiner reminded sternly.

Sima Xian’s Energetic Ball of Light wasn’t done being reforged, so that large staff from before was in his hand. Gesticulating, he declared, “But I am a priest! Didn’t you see my form and my answers? The Red Cardinal Sima Xian, that’s me!”

*giggles*, When Sima Xian said that, on the side of the 21st general grade Demon Hunt Squad, everyone laughed simultaneously; even Long Haochen couldn’t help from doing so.

Lin Xin shifted his gaze, “What Red Cardinal? What I see is closer to a red butcher.”

Sima Xian gave them a glare, shamed into anger, before making gestures to the female examiner, using the staff in his hand, “Respected examiner, things are this way. I am a rather special priest, a rarely seen Discipline Priest. Have you heard about them?”

The priest examiner gave him a doubtful glance, “A Discipline Priest? What’s that?”

Sima Xian replied in all earnesty, “That’s an individual in charge of control, responsible for the respect of the rules in the Priest Temple. Mh, bluntly put, that’s a priest adept in battling. Let’s do it this way. A normal fight of one against one between the two of us wouldn’t seem fair, so how about doing that: I’ll launch an attack from the air against you, and if you believe that you can block me, we’ll continue, but if you don’t think you can, let’s consider the test as passed.”

Saying that, he didn’t wait for the approval of the other side, and animatedly raised his staff.

Yes, Sima Xian’s spiritual stoves were fused, but he ended up being the most miserable one in the group at the time of the fusions, almost turned into barbecue. However, because of this, the overwhelming power of his fused spiritual stove was all the better.

Right then, after he lifted the staff in his hand, an intense light instantly flashed, and intense purple thunderbolts surrounded his staff. On Sima Xian’s chest, an intense purple radiance was lit, amplifying the color of his armor. His staff was moved to the side, and immediately afterwards, a golden bolt was sent flying.

But this wasn’t an ordinary bolt of lightning. Surrounding the light bolts were large amounts of thunder energy. Durng the flight of the bolts of light, that purple lightning appeared like a melted part of the golden bolt, turning it into completely purple gold, before…

Rumbles.

When the bolt of light landed on the ground, everyone felt their own body going numb, and in the center of the field, a three meter large hole appeared in everyone’s line of sight. This hole was over three meters deep, leaving everyone speechless from the sight of that destructive power.

More terrifyingly, around the current Sima Xian, purple golden bolts of light just like this one were revolving one after another, and they weren’t little in quantity. A total of nine bolts circled in the air. Each was fist-sized, but when his staff was lifted again, another bolt of light formed above his staff, gaining in size at an astounding speed.

“Okay, let’s say you passed.”

The female priest chose to admit defeat without hesitation. Was that a priest? Even if this female examiner was even gentler, she would still have the impulse of cursing him in this situation.

Therefore the fourth assessment was concluded.

“Wow Sima, you’re really a true priest…”

Wasnt it 7 sponsored chapters before? Its 5 now? Well whatever, my brain hurts :’|
I’ve started ISSTH and been trying to catch up, abrely able to read 100 chapters a day.

So mext is LHC’s trail? Maybe someone more strong would come for it? I mean these peoplr are weak(i mean compared to the MC’s team)

    • Majk

It was six yesterday so maybe it jsut didn’t update for you?

There is still Chen Ying’er with McDull before LHC. It would be nice if they could get someone special to test LHC since then we could see HY in action again. Otherwise LHC will once again kick the ass of a knight with his mount by himself.

      • Jonathan Hurd

One thing I’ve realized is that the sponsored chapter number stays the same after the chapter has been posted at least for me. So for instance if I look at chapter 361 it will tell me that there are 7 chapters sponsored. If I look at 363 though it tells me there are 5. So I would warn that if you want the accurate number make sure your looking at the latest chapter.

          ctrl f5

        • Robin

I contacted Toto about the counting miss. With that much work he is really busy so please be patient. But you will get all the chapters that were sponsored, I promise.

Also, if you look below the count, you see a list of sponsored chapters with their respective chapter number. There you can see that up to chapter 368 is sponsored no matter what the numbers above say.

          • Jonathan Hurd

Oh yeah, just explaining where the confusion about numbers might be coming from, :D. I will wait as long as I need and thank all sponsors and Toto for all their time and efforts.

      • Evilage

Maybe they will find out that his iT reached 100 this time?

    • Baem LN

I recommend that you read Perfect World! Funny and the MC is so freaking badass!

I think I would send a Prayer to the God of War, lol. Sima is a priest of him and Cai’er is his Holy Daughter, lol.

Kratos journeys to this continent to pickup his daugther from school

        • Jonathan Hurd

To be fair with how many Deities Kratos has killed it seems like a matter time before people start praying to him. Even if the only reason is that he is the only Deity left to pray to, lol.

Probably, i don’t dig the new bread dho, it looks errmm old?

He is old. Old man Kratos. Rasing a kid on his own after kids mom went wherever. So now he kills all norse gods. i cant wait tho game looked AMAZING. Plus all the stuff they said about it makes me wanna play even more.

Fkin called it 1 Hit K.O.

  • Psyside

I still feel sorry for the Knight examiner…. LHC and Han Yu….Git rekt scrub

    • Luke Confidential

I’m wondering if he’s going to test Han Yu and assume the retainer must be far weaker than the Master and just pass him without the shame of getting massacred again.

      • Psyside

That is quite the question. As i recall for advancement, the retaner knight is seperate from the others. He even has to advance with his own contribution points alone while the rest share. It was something like that. I remember from Way back at the begining.

        • Robin

His contribution points do not count during the period of testing because he is not really part of the squad, and most DHS wouldn’t share their contribution points with him. But in this case, it is different. Although his points didn’t count, Haochen and company shared theirs with him, even reducing their total count during the final judgement.

Regarding advancement, I think he also needs to be at the sixth level for them to raise their rank because it would be too dangerous for them to have a weaker support along. But the rule for retainer knights for the rank up was not specially declared here.

          • Psyside

Ye that was it. Ty for clarifying. I think he will be tested too. But the funny part is the test for LHC

  • James Evans

  • Kaarme

Rather than envious and angry, these examiners should consider themselves lucky and feel honoured. In the (near) future when everybody will know the names of the members of Haochen’s legendary demon hunter squad, these examiners can actually tell their children that mama/papa served to make sure these famous men and women were strong enough to be promoted and even dueled one of the members.

    • Jonathan Hurd

They really should feel honored to be allowed to spar against the Bright Rays of Sunshine, lol. Also what they don’t realize is to get these Spiritual Stoves LHC’s team had to fight the DGE’s successor and 9 other top ranked demons… If you want to try your hand for those rewards have at it or you can continue your cushy job safely in the Alliances Territory.

      • Luke Confidential

What they also don’t realize is one day the DGE is going to be the personal bitch of LHC’s mount.

        • Jonathan Hurd

Is it just me or do we end up doing a lot of shipping in these comment threads…., lol.

          • Luke Confidential

Does declaring a living toy qualify as shipping?

          • Lol

  • Luke Confidential

We of the F5 sect shall rule this continent. All who oppose us shall be crushed under our fervent dedication.

    • Jonathan Hurd

To be fair I don’t see how much of a threat we would be to anyone. Before any battle our enemies would just have to leak news that all the LN and manga sites are updating in five minutes and there goes our army, lol.

  • Luke Confidential

We of the F5 sect shall rule this continent. All who oppose us shall be crushed under our fervent dedication.

  • Ah, I hope Sima would bring out his “energetic ball of light” (lol what’s with the name)

  • Athanos

Since this is my first comment around here, I’d like to thank Totobro for the translations and sponsors for the quicker pace!

As for the chapter itself, I’m still amazed by the politeness of our characters. The alliance has many means of identification and appraisal (e.g. team captain insignia, contribution points tablet, that thing to measure external energy, etc.) and yet–instead of actually relying on them–most people first address the MC squad with doubt and “patience”. It’s actually more that the MC squad is “patiently” taking the attitude from these people rather than the other way around.

These examiners with their approach and whole outlook deserve to get their egos shattered. In fact, I’m still hoping for the Knight examiner to return with info on LHC and decree that these examiners aren’t anywhere near qualified to appraise this squad. Where is Chen Ying’er and her unrestrained rebuke when one needs it.

Speaking of Chen Ying’er, I seem to recall that she should gain more OPness once she reaches 7th Step. And we’re almost there!

    • Majk

Well the reaction to their age is pretty normal I mean there are even squads from their year that haven’t even reached the general grade yet. Normally they would be around 30 when they take this test.
I don’t think that they have big egos, they are used to losing to demon squads after all. They are probably acting like this because of the age difference. Just put yourself in their spot. They worked for over 30 year to get to where they are and now some kids that are not even 20 (2 of them are barely 15) and destroy them. It is like a scientist working his whole life on a thesis only to get crushed by someone way younger that didn’t even in west half the amount of time and effort into it. That must not be a very pleasant feeling.
As for Chen Ying’er they said that she has a Body of Chaos constitucion so she could only use the gate spell that she couldn’t even control but at the seventh step she will apparently be able to use all summoning spells up to and within the 7th step with little effort. So then she will finally join the OP squad.

      • Athanos

In the first place, many people in the Alliance act as it’s a common occurrence to see youngsters going to places they aren’t supposed to be. Considering the hierarchy, morale, and rules of the Alliance, it’s more likely that there have been more cases of mistreated squads than cases of lost / trespassing squads. Proper reaction to their appearance is to immediately identify them and verify their claims with the many available tools, and–if necessary–stare in awe the moment everything checks out.

Granted, I was mainly irked by the thoughts / reactions of the assassin and the priest examiners, but the rest doesn’t appear to be above assuming that their utter defeat is all because of the precious equipment. It’s almost as if they have no idea that to get equipment like this one must either go through hell to obtain it directly, or through a lot of smaller hells to get enough contribution points to buy it. And yet it’s far less likely that they don’t know about contribution points, and more likely that they simply assume that if they were Demon Hunters they would have been match to these youngsters (i.e., ego + wistful thinking).

As for the two that irked me the most, even if there were some residual doubts, they should have corrected their expectation of this squad the moment the first match finished with a 1hitKO. Yet the assassin examiner reacted to Cai’Er’s cane switch with “am I being underestimated” (i.e., pure ego) instead of “I better watch out, she may be hiding some surprise too”. And the priest examiner acted as if her opinion on Sima’s vocation actually matters. Though she is an examiner, she should be very far from an authority that can decide who is or isn’t a priest. If she were doubtful yet didn’t treasure her ego so much, she would have gone to check with the Priest Temple like the Knight examiner.

My conclusion, some unrestrained rebuke and / or ego shattering is in order.

PS: Yes, this is–or soon going to be–Chen Ying’er’s situation. There was no need to explain, though, I do remember her situation; hence the line about her getting some more OPness soon.

        • Majk

I only explained Chen Ying’ers situacion it for clarity’s sake 😛

        • Kaarme

I’d say it’s much easier to mentally cope with a life where you must be ready to fight inhuman demons any day using only martial arts if one has some ego and pride in their abilities. Testosterone also helps, although it further ruins social grace.

Haochen’s group knows they are so high above these nameless grunts that it would be impossible for them to get insulted by this degree of ill will. So, they might as well grant them this small amount of leeway.

          • Athanos

I would agree with this, but the examiners aren’t Demon Hunters from what we can tell. Therefore this argument could only explain super-sized ego of the LHC squad, who–despite their talents and achievements–are quite humble for the most part. In fact, the least humble among them usually tend to simply state the plain truth, which may seem like bragging to those who don’t know how things really stand.

          • Kaarme

The soldiers also fight demons whenever the demons attack, which is pretty regularly as we have seen. Unlike demon hunters, they just don’t go out of their way into the demon territory to hunt demons. I’d say for these guys to have reached the sixth step, they have fought their share of demons. Maybe they even were demon hunters from different squads that got dismantled when some of the members died.

          • Athanos

The story suggest that non-Demon Hunters fight demons only when they come to the front door of the Alliance. At least that’s how it has been described thus far.

Furthermore, we know that most cultivation isn’t done in battle–simply remember all the crosslegged sitting sessions for months on end–, so instead of battle, their 6th Steps may have been quite literally forged behind a closed door. When I hink about it, basically all advancements in cultivation of our MC squad took place outside of battle; usually by gaining proper understanding of some aspect of the spiritual energy.

In my opinion, the most likely origin story for these examiners is that they simply failed to become Demon Hunters in the first place. The selection is pretty cutthroat even without the likes of LHC and Cai’Er, and the fact that they are only 6th Step despite their age suggests relatively low innate internal energy. Though not as low as (original) Ye Hua, it was probably low enough to prevent them from getting through the competition before they passed the maximum age. I’m sure that happens all the time, as I’m sure that there are plenty of occupations beside ‘Demon Hunter’ for people like that.

As a bonus, their ignorance about the effort required to obtain even one of the equipment they envy suggests they have never had to deal with contribution points themselves. Otherwise, they wouldn’t think being a Demon Hunter comes with these things, and instead they would wonder what must have these youngsters gone through in order to so many treasures.

          • Kaarme

It would be beyond ridiculous if people tasked with making sure a demon hunter squad is ready to be promoted and thus ready for considerably more difficult demon hunting missions were people who had never seen a real fight or demons themselves. The very epitome of the hypocrites’ slogan of “Do as I say, not as I do.”

People can be envious of great many things without justification. They think they could have done the same if they had been given a fair chance, but somehow the world robbed them of that chance. In their case that might even be the truth if they are failed demon hunters or demon hunter candidates.

          • Athanos

It wouldn’t really be ridiculous; if anything, it would be consistent with what we have read thus far. In fact, do you think that an examiner–whose task is to have a 1v1 fight with someone of the same vocation–would greatly benefit from who knows how old and / or infrequent fight against demons? What these examiners need is 1v1 experience against humans (of the same vocation). And I’m fairly confident that there training grounds for soldiers, maybe even with dedicated courses for would-be examiners. After all, senior demon hunters must be confident that the appointed examiners set the bar high enough to pass only the people who can make it in the commander grade, but not too high as to unnecessarily discourage or slow down progress of hopeful squads.

          • Kaarme

How do you explain not every single soldier of the human army is not some 6th step asskicker, then? They would perform quite nicely against the demon attacks if all the thousands upon thousands soldiers at the border were such powerhouses-in-the-making, instead of some 1st or 2nd step grunts following the orders of a bit higher officers. After all, if all you need to do is to sit in a room behind closed doors to get to the 6th step, it would mean everybody could do it (assuming their inner energy is not in the single digits).

I was under an impression it was difficult to graduate a step and rise to the next step. Something called a breakthrough. In this story our heroes have typically managed those breakthroughs after besting difficult situations, especially the later ones.

          • Athanos

The story made the matter quite clear on a number of occasions in my opinion; especially with the introduction of Ye Hua. The issue is innate internal spiritual energy (IISE) and cultivation talent (i.e., talent to understand the spiritual energy). Why aren’t soldiers of 6th Step a common occurrence? Because the higher the IISE, the fewer the individuals who possess it. Talent is clearly distributed asymmetrically among the population considering Ye Hua has immense talent but only tiny IISE, and therefore there may be people with talent but virtually nonexistent IISE, as well as people with decent IISE but little talent.

If their IISE was too low–even if their talent wasn’t rubbish–, they could never possibly surpass their maximum of external spiritual energy like Ye Hua who was stuck as ab Airborne Knight. This alone would still make it possible for them to be Demon Hunters in the past (i.e., 6th Step is enough for Soldier and General Grades), but their comments suggest otherwise however you choose to interpret them.

In other words, while possible, the much more likely scenario is that they were “only” high prized soldiers who either decided to or were selected to become examiners for the Commander Grade hopefuls. After all, every 6th Step–be it a Demon Hunter, a Soldier, or even an Auctioneer–is sure to have a measure of pride and the role of being essentially a stepping stone for Demon Hunters is not exactly glamorous. That said, someone has to do it; so these people are either forced to do this (unlikely), or they are encouraged to perform this duty and well compensated for their service.

PS: Actually, aside from LHC, lots of recent advancements were due to the aura radiated by LHC during his awakening. Furthermore, Cai’Er cultivated a lot in the aura of the Tower of Eternity, and the list continues. Only relatively few advancements in comparison were made during or as a consequence of a battle against Demons.

          • Kaarme

As is fitting for a combat oriented story, they have been going through plenty of dangers, some of them deadly, all the time. So, you can’t really say they wouldn’t matter (although the same is true in reverse, in theory). Not talking about the early ones since all of these people obviously have lots of talents and the first few steps should be a breeze for them.

However, if closed door training is all they need, why wouldn’t all talented people be kept behind closed doors by strict orders by the Alliance until they are powerhouses? That would be the most sensible thing. The only explanation is that they won’t break through to the higher steps without actual experience, like Haochen for example experienced in the latest battle against the invading demon army when he needed to give his all and then some more, being all ready to die in the process. That’s the kind of thing that makes one take the next step, not sitting in a room uttering mantras.

Now you’re simply ignoring the introduced mechanics and debate the motivation for the story. I agree that the MC squad goes through a lot of difficult encounters, but it would be a pretty bad action story if they just spend the time cultivating. This doesn’t support nor disprove anything we discussed, it merely reinforces the fact that this is an action genre.

The fact is that basically all of their advancements have taken place during peacefully cultivating; usually by discovering new aspects of the spiritual energy. And, while some advancements did happen in connection to adversity, all of these cases can explained by the great, sometime even life-threatening, use of their spiritual energy. And–if we make this assumption that no one can refute or support at this point anyway–, the implication is that this kind of exertion would yield the same benefits no matter circumstances; it would work on a battlefield as well as on the training grounds.

“Right then, after he lifted the staff in his hand, an intense light instantly flashed, and intense purple thunderbolts surrounded his staff. On Sima Xian’s chest, an intense purple radiance was lit, amplifying the color of his armor.” Woah… that’s intense.

“Wow Sima, you’re really a true priest…” – Would’ve considered calling him a Monk. I don’t know why, but I like calling him a Monk.
