Shen Yin Wang Zuo, Chapter 303

Shen Yin Wang Zuo, Chapter 303: Spirit of a Powerhouse (III)

His bone blade and shield also lit in a glowing red color, and under his body, flames soared threateningly. This enemy was one of a kind that Long Haochen’s group had never faced before.

Though also being at the sixth step, the pressure he caused the group to feel was completely different. As the white glowing pillar disappeared silently, an unimpeded violent scream came out from that red skeleton. He didn’t charge yet, just staring at Long Haochen’s group with his eyes glowing with red flames.

In the flames throbbing on his eyes, Long Haochen saw, with astonishment, signs of intelligence. So this Skeleton Warrior is not only conscious, but also intelligent? Undead magic is really an endless marvel!

Stepping forward, the red skeleton raised his bone blade, slowly advancing towards Long Haochen’s group. Although it was at slow pace, each one of these steps appeared extremely firm to everyone else.

As Blue Rain, Hibiscus of Light was raised upwards, Long Haochen’s eyes glistened in intense light, welcoming the red skeleton in big strides. His movement wasn’t so fast-paced either, but followed a certain rhythm. Meanwhile, three strengthening halos were unleashed.

The red skeleton’s eyes flashed, and he immediately closed the distance separating him and Long Haochen, originally quite close to each other. The two parties were from the beginning separated only by five meters. The Red Skeleton suddenly strode forward in a large step, assaulting violently the surroundings with a red-hot aura.

Long Haochen took a little step back, lifting up the Glorious Holy Shield.

Right at that time, the bone sword of the red skeleton chopped down, and the next scene shocked everyone enormously. The flames concentrated around the red skeleton were unexpectedly condensed entirely on his bone blade, the front of which burst out with a crystallic red radiance appearing the same as a material object.

A blazing aura twisted the nearby air surrounding Long Haochen’s body, striking with a powerful flash.

It was Asura Strike, or more accurately speaking, it should be called a Flaming Asura Strike. The blow launched by the red skeleton wasn’t sudden, but gave off a transcendent sensation.

Asura Strike was something Long Haochen was also capable of, but he discovered that when comparing himself to this red skeleton, he was clearly far from being familiar with this skill. This single blow that looked like it had been launched by this red skeleton very easily seemed like one that had been trained through a lot of hard work and undergone numerous revisions.

The Glorious Holy Shield was used in combination with Divine Obstruction, and two Holy Shields were launched in succession; one was launched by the shield, and the other was naturally one of the basic skills of the sixth step that Long Haochen had just learnt.

An immense vibration caused Long Haochen to be pushed back several steps. Right at that time, the red skeleton unexpectedly disappeared from his line of sight.

Relying completely on his natural instincts, Long Haochen swiftly drew back to the left side, immediately launching an Asura Strike with Blue Rain Hibiscus of Light present in his hand.

With another bang, the bone blade in that red skeleton’s hand unexpectedly gathered three of the crystallized radiances from the previous use of Asura Strike, shocking even Long Haochen in the process. An Asura Strike that doesn’t get dispersed after use?

Immediately next, Long Haochen, who didn’t have the time to use Divine Obstruction, was sent flying by the attack.

Both his arms felt sore; it went so far that he was incapable of raising them up. However, as Long Haochen was sent flying, he saw the next course of action of that red skeleton.

This fighting style was truly as natural as flowing water.

After this attack launched at Long Haochen, he didn’t keep pursuing and attacking, because the attacks of the other members of the 21st Demon Hunt Squad were arriving.

The red skeleton suddenly stretched his whole body forward. Even though he was three meters tall, he was still extremely nimble. The Revolving Space Splitting Shield attack from Wang Yuanyuan’s Gigantic Divine Soul Shield flew in his direction, but didn’t hit.

While stretching forward, the red skeleton suddenly twisted his body, pounding the sky with a very dexterous motion of the bone blade in his hand, chopping at the side of Sima Xian’s Energetic Ball of Light, and abruptly accelerating his whole body in the process.

Going almost instantly past the enormous Energetical Ball of Light, he dashed to the middle of Wang Yuanyuan and Sima Xian with no more but a single step forward.

At this time, Long Haochen felt as if the blood inside of him had been clotted, when the Saint Spiritual Stove suddenly erupted, rushing at that red skeleton to try to make himself the target of his attack.

However, the effects of the Saint Spiritual Stove failed that time.

Just as if that red skeleton grew eyes on his back, his body flashed illusorily, separating itself in two in a split second and turned into emptiness upon being reached by the Saint Spiritual Stove, his real body appearing behind Sima Xian’s back.

Oh no! That was Long Haochen’s only thought. Never could he have imagined that this red skeleton born from the spirit of a powerhouse would actually be this powerful.

Everyone was alarmed. Since Long Haochen could see the danger Sima Xian was in, so could Lin Xin, Chen Ying’er, and Han Yu. .

However, they couldn’t do anything to stop the red skeleton’s incoming attack.

The body of the red skeleton suddenly turned into a sort of golden red shadow, escaping against all expectations from the Demonic Eye’s mind attack. Han Yu’s rushed charge was also coming late, and Lin Xin could only hurriedly release one elementary shield. As for Chen Ying’er, there was nothing she could possibly do. This time in the Tower of Eternity, her summoned magical beast was extremely weak, and had already died previously. And there was not enough time to give McDull a magical crystal to eat.

This scene took long to describe, but it happened in a flash. At the time the red skeleton arrived at Sima Xian’s back, his blade was already swinging. It was as if each movement of his was a preparation for the next one; none of these were any wasteful.

Sima Xian was still in the middle of pulling back his Energetical Ball of Light, and basically didn’t even attempt to dodge it. This was because of his confidence in Long Haochen’s Saint Spiritual Stove, having seen its white glow come in contact with the red skeleton.

“Sima!” Long Haochen shouted in despair.

It’s over! Long Haochen’s brain blanked out completely. Considering the strength of that red skeleton, Sima Xian couldn’t possibly survive to his blow.

However, his eyes shrank down right at that time.

Did Sima Xian die? No, he didn’t.

The red skeleton’s bone blade immediately stopped all of a sudden upon entering in contact with his neck, and Sima Xian felt no more but a hot feeling on his neck. Immediately next, that red skeleton’s bone blade was retrieved, hitting immediately at his back, and causing him to be sent flying. The seven members of Long Haochen’s group felt their bodies glint, feeling a pain on their back.

Right at that time, Long Haochen finally returned too. Forcefully pouring spiritual energy in both his arms, he launched Demon Wiping Flash with Blue Rain, Hibiscus of Light.

However, the red skeleton still didn’t pay attention to him, abruptly taking a large step sideways and leaving the range of that Demon Wiping Flash.

The force and the range covered by Demon Wiping Flash could be considered imposing, but it had a defect, and that was its attack range. Although Blue Rain, Hibiscus of Light could unleash brilliant blades of spiritual energy, their range was only roughly six meters and a half. And the range of that red skeleton’s single step easily exceeded these six meters and a half.

Long Haochen’s Saint Spiritual Stove was launched once again, but a golden cover surrounded the red skeleton once again in a flash, and relying on his illusory steps, he left no more but an afterimage, evading Long Haochen’s Saint Spiritual Stove.

But what shocked Long Haochen even more was this time was that, despite that he released the Pull ability of the Saint Spiritual Stove four successive times with almost only a split second difference between each use, that red skeleton still evaded every time with rapid illusory sidesteps. The ability of Long Haochen’s Saint Spiritual Stove only reached those afterimages every time.

Following next was the performance of the red skeleton. Relying on his astounding dexterity and his powerful strength when wielding the bone blade in his hand, he had even yet to make use of his shield. In merely ten seconds, everyone was sent flying successively. But even with a powerful tool such as the Soul Sharing Shackles, these uninterrupted attacks put Long Haochen’s group of seven in a grieving pain. This could only be called a one-sided battle.

Even Long Haochen only lasted for five seconds in front of the red skeleton. The attack aimed at his chest even sent Cai’er flying along with him. She launched a counterattack, but her nimble action only encountered the defense of that skeleton’s blade. This red skeleton looked extremely slow in her eyes, but none of Cai’er’s attacks was of any use. It seemed that all of her techniques were predicted by the enemy, who finally shooed her away in the air with a blow of blade.

Everyone was lying on the ground, benefitting from the Soul Sharing Shackles’ help to share the damage. It could however not ease up the pain. Everyone having received a blade blow on the back, they had such a throbbing and violent pain, that it felt as if their back weren’t their own. The intense burning feeling even caused them to feel that they were unable to breath.

However, after they all lied on the ground, the red skeleton didn’t continue with his attacks, only silently shaking his head at their sight, before turning back. It was as if because of their strength, he didn’t even find it worth to go on. He didn’t keep pursuing and attacking, only returning to the place where he came from, standing silently there. It appeared at that time as if the flames rising around his body were alive.

The seven members of the 21st general grade Demon Hunt Squad were only rejoicing at this sight. If this red skeleton really wanted to kill them, it was without a shadow of a doubt that none of them would be still living at that very instant, much less leaving this place alive.

Sima Xian, who was the very first to have been disposed of during this battle, revealed an agonized face, “Boss, is this guy really only at the sixth step? That’s just too fearful. How is it that we are totally helpless against him? ”

Feeling even more gloomy than him, Long Haochen replied with a bitter smile, “I don’t know either. But his spiritual energy was still in the scope of the sixth step, and it is not even so much greater than my own. But we were unable to resist his attacks back then. Could it be technique? Have you paid attention to the fact that his attacks were really smooth? Just natural and unforced, flowing smoothly and without any superfluous movement. From the start of the battle to its end, it felt as if he didn’t have any lapse in his pace.”

  • Majk

Thank you! I really enjoy the way this is going so far.

  • Majk

Undead magic is really an endless marvel! – Yes, yes give in to the awesomeness of the dark side MUHAHAHAHAHAHA

    • Jonathan Hurd

Or light side considering its holy necromancy :D. Just give in LHC you know you want to be as cool as your latest Sensei!

      • Baem LN

  • Jonathan Hurd

    Thanks for the chapter Toto.

Class is in session with Professor Skeletor, lol. God if this is what a powerhouse of the 6th step in the old days can do I can’t wait to see what a freaking 9th stepper would be capable of.

    • ackehece

do you think he really is 6th step or is he an examiner for the 6th step – think about university profs. They may be doctorates etc and still they teach undergrads… He may be limiting his skills and energy to that of the sixth step (oooh accidentally typed sith step… also makes sense)

      • Jonathan Hurd

That is an interesting point. It is possible that the Specter is from a Soul who got higher than the 6th step but he is limited by the fact that he is possessing a 6th step Skeleton. What might happen is they defeat the Red Skeleton and later on another floor he reappears but is given a better skeleton to possess. Then he could appear at later floors with a better body as a new test.

What I like about this is it is similar to how LHC’s dad taught him in their sparring matches. Fighting with pure skill to overwhelm rather than relying on the sheer difference in Spiritual Energy. I feel this red Skeleton is an even better form of that because he is using a body that has the same strength as LHC’s and he is single handledly handing them their butts and not even breaking a sweat doing it.

I feel like this is a necessary blow to LHC and his teams ego’s as well. They have been besting people of higher steps than them a lot and this can lead to them becoming overconfident in their own power. The Red Skeleton is showing them that they have an amazingly long road still ahead of them. He is also showing how complacent the team has become always relying on LHC’s Saint Spiritual Stove to save them in a pinch, and what will happen if LHC couldn’t lock on to a target before the target got to the other members.

        • Baem LN

I completely agree with your points about the team’s ego and dependency of the team to LHC.

How about a theory of this Warrior Spirit is the soul of an elite bodyguard for Elux? I reckon it is highly possible as what the warrior has done until now is more about training the team as a whole rather than massacring them in no more than 20 seconds.

          • Jonathan Hurd

I was kind of thinking he might have some sort of connection to Elux as well. It could be that Elux communicated with this Warriors soul and they came to a mutual agreement/contract. The Warrior helps Elux and in return he gets to continue to fight and refine his art even after death. Would be interesting if Necromancers made contracts with Souls like Summoners make them with Magical Beasts.

As far as how this particular Specter works I have a few theories. One possibility I see is that Elux can give this Specter orders to do but leaves the execution to him. So he could of left general orders like stop anyone who challenges you but don’t kill them.

What could also potentially be happening is that the specter kept his combat instincts and training but not his memories. So he’s now running on autopilot or is set like a Computer Program to respond to certain stimulus and stop after executing a programmed response. Taking into account he defeated LHC’s team in the exact same way by hitting them in the back then stopped attacking that might also make some sense.

He could also be running with his full personality and is working more like equals than a servant with Elux. The reason he is going easy on them then would he just doesn’t consider them a real threat. From the display he showed it was basically like an adult fighting a bunch of children, killing or seriously injuring them would just be shameful.

        • JBJHova

I hope this lets the team realize they can’t completely depend on LHC’s spirit stove pull technique. They have conveniently been fighting without ever having to worry about defense for like almost a full year now. Sima blindly stood in the face of an attack because he believed in the pull technique. I believe in trust but not at the expense of your natural fighting instincts and defense should be a part of your natural fighting instincts. Team strength is amazing but LHC will not always be there; they can’t forget about their own individual fighting ability.

          • Jonathan Hurd

This is pretty much the second wake up call for the rest of LHC’s team since the first one was when they were fighting without him against that Fiend Unit. They really do need to learn to be more self reliant. Partly it is good to be able to trust your back to your comrade, but at the same time I think they push a bit too much of the burden on to LHC. To become true powerhouses they need to learn to step up and face the pressure of the most powerful foes and overcome them just like he does.

This is also an important wake up call for LHC. Since he has been eating through people two steps above him this will be a good reminder that there are still people way stronger than him even in the same step as him. Knowing LHC I am pretty sure he will get the message that there is still plenty of room for improvement and useless motion in his actions that can be ironed out.

I just have to say I think inheriting this tower might just be the best thing to happen to LHC thus far…. Okay second thing, first thing I will always put down as meeting and bonding with Hao Yue.

    • Evilage

Am i the only one who thinks that there could be a 10th stepper in the old days?
i mean come on there should be atleast some scions of light and samsara in the past even if it wasnt recorded, so why cant there be 10th steppers who werent recorded ?

      • Baem LN

        Define 10th stepper?

      • Andy W

I don’t think there is such a thing as a 10th step, but I think above the 9th step would be godly or heavenly step/level. The Lich King in Hao Yue’s world said that he (Austin Griffin) used his power at the “heavenly step” to allow himself to reincarnate, so maybe after the 9th step is God level but there might be levels in between.

  • agila0212

Thank you for the chapter 🙂

  • ackehece

More!!! I think I love this skeleton guy – he is awesome and is definitely a teach who can press hard and still at the last second stop and not hurt them. A challenge that will polish skills to the utmost and also potentially allow them new skills. Keep at it 21st!
    I know I need to wait 24 hours but… please 1 more today /puppydogeyes

    • Jonathan Hurd

Patience is a virtue. Trust me we’re all starting to get the shakes while waiting for all the freaking awesome future events that have been promised in the story one after another. Soon we get to see them go and try to get Spiritual Stoves, Hao Yue’s latest Evolution, and more one on one lessons with Professor Bones. Whats not to love? But we must respect our Savior Totobro. When the next chapter comes the anticipation will make it all the sweeter….

    • Baem LN

How about you sponsor several chapters? At least you can get daily release! ^_^

      • Evilage

  • Anto Wibowo

    Skeleton guy! Strong!
    Thank you for the chapter!

    • Baem LN

That team got raped in their asses! LHC is gonna borrow this skeleton to Haoyue world after this if he can do it, LOL!!!

  • Evilage

Dor a secound there i thought sima would die and another female hot priest would come to the team(Only to be killed by cai’er for going after haochen)
am i the only one who is disappointed due to lack of beauty of cai’er’s mom? She looks too old in the manga

    • Habakaki

the cost of cai’er is her beauty, thats samsara price 😛

      • Evilage

but but, wasnt she described as a beauty in the novel?

        • balinor

they all look alike in manhwa if LHC’s pet didn’t have three heads he would look handsome too i bet xD

          • Evilage

“pet” that’s completely disrespecting austin griffin.
calamity befalls for the people who disrespect austin griffin

          • Jonathan Hurd

Hey all three of his heads are Handsome! That is what will eventually attract Ying’er to him….

          • balinor

but really in all honesty it is like in manhwa they copy the faces and only change the hair. go see stellar transformation manhwa.father+2brother+guards+uncle(not even blood related) they all look like each other xD

          • Evilage

There is a manhwa of stella transformation?

          • Evilage

legends of the immortals…i read the manhwa and tried to find the novel, dumb me

        • Habakaki

          just wuxia things ~

  • felix

    Thanks for the chapter!

  • Orario MAL

    Thank you for the chapter!

  • Psyside

Wow he wiped the flor with them.
Now i wanna see LHC ask the skeleton to spar with him xD

  • balinor

and here comes the INDIVIDUAL battle prowess MATTER TOO. sigh~ at least now they get it.that guy from demon god slaying squad shouldn’t have given them that equipment this soon, now they are reliant on it and can’t take pain individually (except Cai’er xD) LHC is focusing too much on his stove and the other members of team rely on that AND DON’T EVEN DODGE????? not saying trust is bad but that is just plain stupid, unless in a no way to run situation. well if that was a real battle the guy should have died out of stupidity. well at least now they are going refine their skill individually which is good i guess.

btw thanks for chapters great translations as always

    • Jonathan Hurd

To be fair with out the Soul Linking Chains they would be dead….

      • balinor

true but what i meant was that they are too dependent on it. it is like you have a super shield and just because of that you don’t bother to learn to preserve your life. and there are A LOT of demons who can easily shatter the link instantly and kill them all in one fell swoop.

        • Psyside

The thing is they fight people with a power lvl above their. That would mean they are faster so dodging the attacks is pointless when you cant. Also dodging does leave you open if you fail to dodge. What they did is absorb some of the attack trough a block and the rest trough the shackles

          • Jonathan Hurd

True dodging is not always the answer but I always wonder about how they never seem to bother to do it. They just seem to default to brute forcing. I understand part of that is the Saint Spiritual Stove forces the attack towards LHC, but still dodging some attacks can save a whole lot of Energy since you wouldn’t need Elemental Shields or defensive abilities then.

The other thing is that I haven’t really seen LHC trying to use some of the tricks Asura Ye taught him like reducing the force by blocking with your shield at an angle. I understand LHC is usually relying on Divine Obstruction, but at the same time if you can do something to lighten the blow at all it will surely increase your chances of successfully blocking and give you more of a chance to counter attack.

    • AnarchyDev

You’re saying as if they could dodge those attacks. For example your max speed is 5 and the red skeleton warrior is 10….so? The red warrior is at the peak of control and power with experience, so what the team needs now is just that…. Experience, better control of their power and more tactics.

      • balinor

no i am saying he should at the very least TRY to dodge. let us say you are in a war(guns and stuff) and you have a very trusted friend who is a sniper, would you dock outta way of bullets yourself or stand there like a target practice and die because you “trusted” your comrade? which is more practical? yes they need experience but they also need to THINK about what they are doing. he could dodge and LHC use pull at same time. so yes standing there like a practice dummy is stupid and illogical

        • Jonathan Hurd

Another problem with the way they currently fight is that while they have currently only been fighting one of the super elite Demons at a time for the most part. There are no assurances the situation won’t change. If they end up in a situation with two or more powerhouses like the Golden Birdy Demon and the Scarlet Beserker Demon attacking at the same time again, well LHC could only handle one of those powerhouses but that still leaves the second one free reign. If they want to follow LHC’s example and truly help him they are going to need to learn how to fight and block powerhouses themselves so that he has less to worry about.

What I really like about this Red Skeleton is he is overwhelming them, but he is not using a Spiritual Stove, any amazing equipment, skills that are out of LHC’s teams reach, or even overwhelming Spiritual Energy. He is still using the crappy gear of a Skeleton Knight which has already been seen to be the Skeletons biggest weakness, a technique half of LHC’s team can now use, and Spiritual Energy matching LHC’s. The difference though is he doesn’t need to fall back on crutches because his experience can make up all the gap.

Honestly we can compare this to when LHC first fought Wang Yuanyuan. He was clearly stronger than her but because he couldn’t rely on his gear he was being overwhelmed. LHC had to at the end pull out Hao Yue to finally succeed in that fight. Well this Skeleton is fighting a group of people not far from his own strength who have way better gear than him and not even breaking a sweat.

He is showing what is possible when you stop making excuses and really work to refine your art. Yes, he might have centuries of experience on them but at the same time he is proving that as long as you put your mind to it you can get strong even without outside tools.

          • Baem LN

I am 200% agree with you!!!

      • Jonathan Hurd

Whats interesting is from what the chapter said, from Cai’er’s perspective, its not that the Red Skeleton is that much faster than them. If anything he appears slow to Cai’er and yet she is still completely out matched by him and he can dodge the Saint Spiritual Stove which travels faster than any of them can move because he can out predict their every move and has planned his next ones far ahead.

The Red Skeleton honestly might be a little weaker than Cai’er and LHC in physical capabilities and yet he is just so much stronger because he is applying what little power he has so much better than they are.

The big thing to learn from this encounter isn’t that they are being overwhelmed by the difference of power like they are when fighting 7-8th steppers. This is someone who has the same kind of specs, or worse, as them and yet can handle them like they are nothing. It shows just how much room to grow they have even at their current level. It also shows how much of a difference skill can make when fighting people stronger than you.

        • Baem LN

It’s like comparing a master samurai’s grip on techniques he mastered with a novice samurai’s technique the novice mastered. Am I right?

  • Greg Skillman

Thank you for the chapter and can’t wait to see how LHC will over come this new obstacle.

  • Mangaaddict

This was a really good chapter that is making me more interested in how necromancy works in this universe. First, since the red skeleton was in the sixth step and since the tower was sealed ever since the necromancers were destroyed then we can assume that the soul that currently inhabits the skeleton is a soul from a powerhouse when humanity was at its peak. Now what I want to know is if the strength of that skeleton was the average strength of a human at the sixth step or if the skeleton was just an exception.

  • ZaX

That flame skeleton is good. He didn’t even lose that bad against the moon demon. Thanks for the chapter

  • Zeth

    Thank you!

  • AnarchyDev

Finally a worthy fight… Though one sided, the next round should be interesting. Thanks for the chapter translation

  • lordcattank

thank you very much for the chapter

  • RedDragonX

    Thanks for the chapter!
