Shen Yin Wang Zuo Chapter 270

Shen Yin Wang Zuo, Chapter 270: Challenge accepted (II)

Long Haochen had a calm and collected reaction, “How many people participated in this betting?”

Yang Wenzhao replied, “A lot. Very few were optimistic on your ability to win against veterans like the 8th general grade Demon Hunt Squad’s members. This fifth brother should have gone out to borrow some contribution points. I estimate that he will be back soon. Just how many contribution points did you bet? How is it that he needed to go borrow some?”

Long Haochen revealed a smile, “10,000 contribution points.”

“What?” It was not only Yang Wenzhao; even Duan Yi on the other side couldn’t help but cry out in alarm.

“You’re crazy! Don’t you know how much energy we would have to put in to gain 10,000 contribution points. You have not only to think about yourself but also about your comrades’ opinions.”

Yang Wenzhao’s words were closer to a rebuke than a piece of advice.

“Is the pressure on our captain something you are involved in? This was something we were willing to do, and we aren’t afraid of the loss.” Chen Ying’er’s dismissive and aggressive voice sounded.

Looking at her, Yang Wenzhao had a serious tone, “Chen Ying’er, this is business between Brother Long and myself.”

Chen Ying’er did a sudden grimace, “Business? Seeing your expression, I’m sure you’re just pressuring him because of the hundred contribution points you betted. And you still have the nerve to come at us.”

Seeing that Yang Wenzhao’s expression was quite ugly, Long Haochen gave Chen Ying’er a glance, “Rest at ease, Brother Yang. Since I dared to bet this much, I have absolute confidence in myself.”

On the other side, Duan Yi suddenly stood up, turned his head and looked quite thoughtful.

Yang Wenzhao felt hesitant, “Brother Duan, where are you going? I estimate that this fifth brother should come soon. We should put up a strong front to support and applaud Haochen right now.”

Duan Yi gave him a glance, “I’m going to increase my bet on Haochen.” Having said this, he rapidly headed to the exit.

After a short time of surprise, Yang Wenzhao immediately reacted, sending a glance in Long Haochen’s direction before standing up as well, and heading to the exit. He even walked a lot faster than Duan Yi.

Being a smart person, how could he not come to the same realization as Duan Yi? Who was Long Haochen? He was the one that surpassed the two of them during the Demon Hunt Selection Competition, as well as the team competition that followed, leading the 1st soldier grade Demon Hunt Squad to their final victory. Would he do something like this if he wasn’t confident? Daring to bet 10,000 contribution points, what did it imply?

And the odds were one against thirty! If Long Haochen won…

The Knight Stadium was becoming more and more crowded and by now, at least fifty people had rushed in. And all the people that came in were exclusively Demon Hunters.

On the eighth Demon Hunt Squad’s side, third brother, fifth brother and sixth sister arrived together. They were not surprised to learn that people were betting on this duel. Since they were going to profit from it, they could just as well share a bit of this profit with others.

Lin Xin and Luc Xi came right behind them, standing side by side next to Long Haochen. Yang Wenzhao and Duan Yi were following behind, wearing ugly expressions.

“Did you start a betting stand?” Long Haochen’s ardent gaze was directed at Lin Xin.

Lin Xin chuckled, “Don’t worry boss, I know what I am doing. Anyway, the whole amount of everyone’s bet was restricted to at most 10,000 contribution points.”

Long Haochen’s expression finally relaxed. If they had collected too much money in the betting pool, their Demon Hunt Squad could very possibly lose a family’s fortune. And afterwards, they couldn’t possibly stay low key. It would never be a good for a weak party to make too many enemies at once.

“Haochen, you should control this little Lin Xin better. It’s so unfair; when we came to raise our bet, he actually didn’t accept!” Yang Wenzhao’s unhappy voice was heard.

Because Lin Xin and Luc Xi were seated at the nearest seats to Long Haochen, Yang Wenzhao and Duan Yi could only go sit a little further away.

Lin Xin put on a wronged face, “It’s not that I don’t want to accept, but that you came late. You only arrived after our betting stand was closed. I couldn’t do anything about it. Right, brother Luc?”

Luc Xi, who seemed to have suddenly gotten familiar with Lin Xin over this little period of time, nodded in response, “That’s just the way it is. We cannot do anything about it. We would need to look for the Transaction Center’s staff members to make sure if this betting stand was fair, and we don’t have the time for this. Please come earlier next time, sirs.”

Long Haochen and Lin Xin looked at each other face to face, giving off perturbed looks.

Lin Xin wore a despising expression, telling him in a low voice, “Those two have certainly betted a hundred contribution point on us, but each of them has also betted 10,000 contribution points on this fifth brother. And now, they want to go back on the deal? They should better have thought it through earlier.”

Long Haochen just remained silent. Other people’s contribution points really weren’t worth worrying about.

Thinking of it, he patted Cai’er’s little hand, before she nodded in response. Then, he stood up, advancing towards the stadium’s entrance. Without any need for him to do anything, the staff member of the Knight Stadium had already invited a Temple Knight of the seventh step to make sure this match would be fair. Of course, this wasn’t done for free. Five hundred contribution points had to be paid to this Temple Knight coming from a Demon Hunt Squad, and this amount would be paid out of the winner’s pockets.

The fifth brother also entered the stadium, wearing an indifferent face, giving a look to Long Haochen who had already changed into his Holy Spirit Armour. He clearly still felt a bit ashamed. Letting a smile appear on his face, he said, “Little brother, you can still think this through. Even now it isn’t too late if you want to lessen the amount of contribution points you staked.”

Long Haochen shook his head, “There’s no need. Since I came here, I will fight with my full strength.”

Looking at Long Haochen, the expression on the face of this Temple Knight of the seventh step suddenly became shocked, but it rapidly returned to normal. Nodding to the two of them, he declared, “All good. Please hand over the contribution of your bet to me.”

The two of them transferred their contribution points.

The Temple Knight declared, “This is just a friendly match, so in case a party concedes or loses the ability to fight, the opponent is not allowed to keep attacking, let alone killing the other party. If I decide that one of you cannot bear the opponent’s attack, I will stop the match. Seeing so many Demon Hunters watching this match, I believe that what they want to see is a fair match.”

Long Haochen’s hand lit up, and his Holy Spirit Sword appeared. He raised it above his left shoulder, before he performed a standard knight salute to this Temple Knight.

The fifth brother also remembered to salute the Temple Knight, and at his signal, the two parties started to put some distance between them.

“Start!” The Temple Knight shouted loudly.

Long Haochen didn’t take out another weapon, only grasping the Holy Spirit Sword in his hand. Performing a knight salute, he immediately launched a charge in the fifth brother’s direction.

The fifth brother was also clad in heavy armor, which was visibly a lot thicker than Long Haochen’s Holy Spirit Armor. Although it was only a magical equipment, its defensive power was visibly a lot stronger.

In his hands was a pair of battle-axes. The opponent turned out to be a dual-axe-wielding warrior.

The fifth brother’s axes were enormous, looking almost like half-wheels. With its upper part covered in an eerie light, it was imbued with magic fluctuations. In the axe’s head, a round green gem was inlaid.

Facing Long Haochen’s charge, the fifth brother laughed out loud, equally advancing with big strides to welcome him. His build was extremely sturdy, and with the addition of his heavy armor, he looked just like an impenetrable wall. Compared to him, Long Haochen visibly looked too weak.

Seeing that the two of them were about to collide, the fifth brother swung the axe in his left hand above his head, launching a chop at Long Haochen. He didn’t attack with the axe in his right hand yet, keeping it near his body.

Facing such a force, contained in this axe imbued with powerful spiritual energy, Long Haochen immediately came to a stop. Parrying with his Holy Spirit Sword, he used a standard defensive posture.

With a loud clang sound, golden light glinted, and Long Haochen didn’t move from his position. The fifth brother’s axe was repelled, and at that time, Long Haochen launched a lightning-like stab with the Holy Spirit Sword in his right hand, transforming one movement into multiple sword blows. This was Lightning Thrust.

Long Haochen was just battling with a single sword, causing the fifth brother to feel hesitant to tell whether he was a Guardian Knight or a Retribution Knight. Divine Obstruction was a Guardian Knight ability, whereas Lightning Thrust was used by Retribution Knights.

Divine Obstruction? Those words immediately resounded in the fifth brother’s mind. Consequently becoming more cautious, he rapidly waved the axe in his right hand, brandishing it forward and blocked the launched Lightning Thrust.

However, Long Haochen’s Lightning Thrust was truly too fast. His opponent was unable to block it completely, and at least five to six hits landed on that thick armor, causing repeated metallic sounds. And five or six dents were left on the armor.

Although Long Haochen’s blow didn’t make use of any other ability, it carried Bright Vengeance, naturally raising its power significantly.

The fifth brother rapidly drew two steps back, waving his pair of axes before himself. Intense fluctuations of spiritual energy accompanied this movement, enabling it to block Long Haochen’s series of attacks.

By now, his evaluation of Long Haochen had greatly risen, and all his contemptuous behaviour had vanished.

This was a Guardian Knight able to use both Divine Obstruction and Lightning Thrust. And based on his offensive power, he could tell that Long Haochen was truly a knight at the fifth step. But how old could he be? Still, it looked as if in this battle, he would really have to go all out.

Two consecutive sword blows were launched, charged with golden Light Thorns, blocking the fifth brothers axes. Long Haochen drew closer once again, launching Assault!

The fifth brother shouted furiously, moved sideways to gain momentum, and swiftly stroke in Long Haochen’s direction with both of his two axes. Having tested the opponent previously he didn’t hold back in the slightest with this attack. An ardent green spiritual energy rushed forth from his body, and the pair of axes broke out with bright light, seemingly becoming especially penetrating. The powerful fluctuation of spiritual energy seemed to be accompanied with a tornado, violently surging up in Long Haochen’s direction.

Among warriors, axe-wielders were categorized in the same category as Berserk Warriors. Completely focusing on attack, they were the same as Retribution Knights. It’s just that they didn’t have a mount. Also, while knights’ attribute was light, it wasn’t necessarily the case for warriors, whose element of predilection was variable.

In the middle of Assault, Long Haochen suddenly jumped a meter high into the air. This motion was so sudden that even the fifth brother’s dual axes couldn’t completely lock him up. Moving at great speed, Long Haochen was already behind the fifth brother, and not only avoided his strikes, but also gave himself an opportunity for counterattack.

Haochen attacked with Lightning Thrust. Using Lightning Thrust again, he was however stopped this time.

A strong green-colored spiritual energy resisted him. With several splashing ripples of spiritual energy, his Lightning Thrust was unable to reach the fifth brother’s waist. Suddenly, he seemed to turn into a green tornado, striking in Long Haochen’s direction. It was Tornado Strike!

The last words are in chinese…
how can haochen possibly lose this? If he summons haoyue he can win onesidedly( not that it already isnt)
    thanks for the chapter

    • the last two words were the chinese writing of tornado strike, I just left it there to copy it to the glossary later, but my internet lags too much for that.

    • Kaarme

Haochen isn’t taking this deadly seriously. It looks like he’s testing his basics against the warrior, to see how much he has grown and thus how much his baseline has risen. Even a low level technique performed by a high level fighter is more dangerous than when used by an amateur.

      • Luke Confidential

Lets not forget LHC’s ridiculous Mana Recovery Rate. He’s wearing the enemy down in a battle of attrition. That way there’s no risk of accidentally killing him.

        • Evilage

If he takes it seriously the warrior will end up dead.(that would be nice too but still)
while i was going though some old chapters i just released that his father also told him to get a mithril armor before searching for him

          • Viv Lih

Was it mithril? I thought it was a silver foundation armor? Aren’t there ones like gold and silver foundation armors? Or perhaps the wording was different back then? It was several hundred chapters ago after all…

          • Jonathan Hurd

I believe the armors are made of mithril. I think they call them Silver Foundation Armors as kind of like a title. They mentioned that LHC’s mentor Guardian Knight is potentially going to become a Golden Foundation Knight. Not 100% sure what that means yet, but I’m guessing it is probably a position of honor for knights.

          • Schattenbach

Those armors are special and there’s only a limited amount of them. So maybe there’s a even higher quality amount of them reversed for knights of the eight step made of some other fantasy metal like oricalcum or something like that.

        • Kaarme

I’d say fearing this warrior would drop dead so easily would be underestimating him. The man is no weakling but a veteran demon hunter, despite everything. However, I said what I said because Haochen definitely didn’t begin this match overly seriously. He only equipped the weaker of his two swords and used basic techniques. It was as if he decided to see if those are now more effective than they were before the rewarding trip to the hissing caverns.

          • Luke Confidential

Didn’t LHC slaughter a Fiend Commander like a paper doll on his way out of the Hissing Cavern?

          • Kaarme

Uh, yeah, I don’t mean he should that it THAT seriously.

          • Viv Lih

Of course he can take it that seriously, that’s what the 7th step Tenple Knight is for. Let the swindler get his ass saved by the referee after a pummeling by Asura Strike.

Realistically though, even if we wanted that to happen, it would be difficult to accumulate the same about of power in a single strike in the middle of the battle. LHC was riding on Hao Yue and was not fighting at that time on the Hissing Carvern mission, so it was possible, but only then with the use of storing power.

          • Robin

I loved the shocked reaction of the referee when Haochen announced that he would fight with his full strength. He probably heard about Haochen’s special talent. ^^

          • Viv Lih

I don’t think that was the reason he was shocked. It would be for granted that the one assumed to be younger would try their best, especially if it was 10,000 to 100,000 points they were betting. Maybe something else?

          • Robin

I think he recognizes Haochen, but it is only my guess so far.

      • Majk

I think that he is taking it seriously I mean in the previous he activates his ripples of light (based on the sound which to me means that he adjusted the frequency of his attack) plus LH is pretty competitive so I do believe that he will go all out, maybe he will not summon HY to test only himself but everything else goes

        • Luke Confidential

Austin Griffon summons himself. It’s like majk.

          • Jonathan Hurd

LHC isn’t so much holding back at this point in the fight, but more like hes feeling his opponent out. He needs to know what his opponent is and what he is capable that is why he is doing probing attacks right now. It would be stupid to start off with your strongest attacks against an enemy you know nothing about. We saw the result of that when LHC tried to use Condemning Revolving Sword Strike against that peaked 6th step Dark Green Dual Bladed Demon.

It is also smart to economize your power to begin with and play it for the long haul as long as you don’t understand how your opponent fights. With Eternal Melody and Yating on his side he can basically launch light thorns forever. No need to go flashy when he can do chip damage and force 5th brother warrior to react to him.

Another aspect is that this 5th brother is a perfect person to experiment the effect of Ripples of Light on. LHC still hasn’t had many chances to use it in real battle and he needs to see how it matches up offensively against other attacks.

          • Kaarme

Such probing isn’t plausible at least in military tactics. If possible, you use sufficient force to beat the opponent as soon as possible. Only in fiction fights go so that people start with measly attacks and gradually use better and better. It’s a waste of energy and prolonging the conflict purposefully only gives your enemies more chances. I’m also not sure of its dramaturgic worth in all cases. At least I’m, and many others, quite impressed also by very short fights where the MC ends it quickly with overwhelming force. Haochen clearly made a conscious decision to not end this one too promtly. Only he knows why. Maybe he didn’t want to crush the warrior’s pride completely, maybe he didn’t want to reveal all of his own powers to the large audience, or maybe he wanted to test his own techniques in no hurry.

          • Robin

As you pointed out, it is fiction. In real fights you don’t regenerate your strength while fighting or have a summon ass back-up. In a real fight it naturally makes sense that one will attack with full force and tries to overwhelm the opponent. Something like the first fight of the Shreck Seven Devils in the School Competition when they won within a minute.

          • Schattenbach

Using up a bit of time at the start of a fight to gauge your opponents capabilities as well as to look for any weaknesses to exploit shouldn’t be a waste of time, after all. There are actual fighting styles that work quite a bit like that, although they most likely aren’t among the “most powerful” (because most people one is likely to fight against over the course of their fighting career simply don’t warrant that much effort as simply crushing them ASAP really turns out to be both quicker and more efficient as far as solutions go. That’s even more the case when it comes to typical self-defense situations, I guess, although there’s often the low-risk “running away” solution, too.).

          • Robin

Yes, you are right. But running away is not an option for Haochen and he would never do so. My guess is, he is experimenting with his own strength and new abilities. As mentioned somewhere above, it is the perfect opportunity to train. An opponent with battle experience at an adequate power level, a referee who would intervene when Haochen accidentally goes overboard, and a big reward in sight.

          • Kaarme

Against this opponent Haochen doesn’t really need to gauge or look for weaknesses. If he’s gauging something, it’s his own level of power. What you describe fits better a bout between opponents of roughly the same level, imagined or real, who would want an opening to exploit in order to secure their own victory and lessen the risk of losing. Of course openings don’t appear by themselves, so you’d need to do something to create them.

Haochen could end this any moment he wanted if he went all out. Which leads us back to the fact he didn’t want to end it too soon for his own reasons. Well, who knows, maybe he’s even fancying he might learn something from this man just like he stole the Asura strike from the skeletal warriors.

          • Schattenbach

Ah … I was just pointing out that these kind of things do happen during fights in real life (though I also agree with you in that, usually, intelligent use of brute force to quickly disable others, is more efficient; it’s also safer as it gives them less opportunity to hurt you even if it’s just by chance)

My guess about why Haochen is holding back is, for once, tactics (playing it safe by wearing his opponent down … by making his opponent use up most of his internal spiritual energy and damaging his equipment and wounding his body … – while Haochen is still mostly unharmed and has enough fuel left to do as he pleases or to recover most of it over the span of whatever few moments are left of this fight – to then overpower him with extremely powerful moves like Asura Strike he can neither block nor tank) and, more importantly, to help him to break through the bottleneck he’s about to face (though if he actually breaks through that bottleneck during this fight and cleans things up as radiant knight, while awesome, it is still an chance he shouldn’t count on … ).

          • Schattenbach

Edit: While that explains why he didn’t use his fairy up to this point (to conceal just how easy it is for him to recover his stamina), it doesn’t explain Haoyues absence. Maybe he’s trying to fool him into thinking that his mount isn’t suitable for combat, maybe Haoyue already started casting some big spell (if it’s legal to summon him that way / make him summon himself that way) to crush his opponent, maybe both.

          • Schattenbach

Edit2: I actually reread the final fight of the individual DHS competition … and Haoyue instantly using 5th step spells casted before summoning the moment he appeared was deemed legal back then. If the rules aren’t any stricter than they were back then, there shouldn’t even be an issue with Haoyue blasting that “fifth brother” with a spell of the 7th step.

          • Jonathan Hurd

I agree completely that in Military tactics wise it is smarter to strike decisively, but even in Military tactics it is very unwise to all out attack an enemy you do not understand. The big thing to remember is this is more along the lines of a spar to begin with anyways. If LHC’s goal was just to kill his opponent he could just do what he did against that 6th step Fiend Commander. Storing Power and then Asura Strike him in half. The problem though is that compared to some mid level demon this Warrior has equipment and potentially a Spiritual Stove to supplement himself. Add in LHC does not want to kill him making this tactic a bit overkill.

I agree I enjoy short burst fights as well and we are definitely seeing LHC fight slightly differently than usual, but that is mainly because his opponent isn’t stronger than him. When faced with overwhelming difference in strength LHC uses Asura Ye’s lessons to subdue them by continuously chaining attacks. Against closer ranked opponents he has a tendency (when not on the battlefield) to show more power to match his opponents.

I feel his decision to fight like this might be multi-layered. One aspect could be to try and protect 5th brothers pride. No reason to make an enemy out of a General Grade DHS by shaming them overly much. It will make it much easier to bear if LHC barely wins versus him just flat out toppling 5th brother. Another is that Fifth brother is a good target for LHC to test himself and his Ripples of Light against. Considering that the last fight he did was in berserk rage and he ended the only real challenging threat with Hao Yue’s help this could be a good stage to see how far he solo has come. Also remembering how LHC fought in the Demon Hunt Selection he usually doesn’t bring out more power until you show you deserve it. Like when he was facing off against Wang Yuanyuan.

        • Stephen_H

With how LHC disliked when Han Yu went easy on him and lost through overconfidence, and the knights code, I think he will fight full strength.

          • Kaarme

Haochen can’t fight full strength. He would kill the warrior and thus lose his pride as knight (also the bet by default, but that would be trivial compared to killing a fellow demon hunter). There’s a difference between going easy (looking down) on someone and not going all out. It’s quite possible the warrior wouldn’t even have a chance to give it his all either, but it’s also possible he wouldn’t do it even if he could. Hard to say. He’s already a scumbag by trying to cheat newcomers, but whether he’s rotten enough to use deadly force with the intention to kill in a bout like this is another matter again.

          • Robin

He said himself that he would fight with his ful strength. The referee’s reaction to that was nice. And in case it would get life-threatening for the warrior, the referee will intervene and save him. As long as Haochen is able to stop his attack after the referee’s call, everything is fine.

          • Kaarme

Of course he says that. He couldn’t very well say he would fight with his right hand tied behind his back. However, he didn’t summon Haoyue immediately, didn’t start with his better sword or his best techniques to take the warrior by absolute surprise. So, his words were more like a statement that he’s going to win no matter what. Like one should claim before any match.

          • Robin

He didn’t let his opponent know which kind of knight he is either. This is simply called tactic. You don’t show all your trump cards from the beginning without testing the waters first.

  • Daene Kendrick

Silly Duan Yi in Yang W betting against LHC 10k each lol sorry fellows

    • Stephen_H

I don’t feel sorry for them, I was dying with laughter when Lin Xin said boss they bet 10 000 CP against you.

      • Luke Confidential

This sort of bet hedging is silly. If they honestly thought LHC had a decent chance they should have just bet a modest amount on him and let it ride.

        • ShelfCloud

Seriously, in the end that brings them just a huge lost. What surprised me though, was that they even had so many points. And I think so far, they should not have much more. Their teams, if they did not decide that jointly, will not be happy with this bet. They will lose about 70% of their points…

          • Luke Confidential

            Probably more like 90%

The best Soldier Grade Missions only grant 2k or so at best, and there’s no way they’ve had the time to complete more than two.

Add on an additional 1k each for demon kills

          • ShelfCloud

I calculated 70% because I thought they had, before the bet, about 10k points. They will lose the 10k they betted on the warrior but for the 100 points they betted on Haochen they will get 3000 back. So it is not a total loss for them but it will still be a huge setback.

          • Luke Confidential

Ah, yes. A huge setback indeed.

But the 21st General Grade Squad will have more than enough funds for Lin Xin to run a loanshark operation.

            20% monthly compounding interest mayhaps?

[To clarify incase I’m using the wrong finance terms: Take out loan, immediately owe 120%, at the start of each monthly term the debt increases to 120% of whatever is owed at that time.]

          • ShelfCloud

That’s some huge interest rate you are assuming there O.o’. But the worst part: I can actually picture Lin Xin doing this… If something like this really happens, they will never have to go on a mission again. They have the necessary starting capital.

And this 8th general squad really does not seem to be one of the best of their generation. Still Yang Wenzhao and Duan Yi must have worked pretty hard to reach this amount in this short time with just soldier grade missions.

          • Jonathan Hurd

Lin Xin the gift that keeps on giving. I just keep wondering how many more points they are going to get before they spend some and make my dreams come true T.T.

          • Robin

I am curious about that as well. They will be seriously more than rich. Yang Wenzhao and Duan Yi will turn green of envy! XD

          • Stephen_H

Well I am sure most teams didn’t spend all the CP they earned from the training / missions on upgrading to a General. I think most teams would/should have a bit of CP on hand.

          • carlo arcenal

I was surprised too how the both of them got 10 000 cp..

      • Daene Kendrick

that right there is already 20k winnings just from those 2. They each bet 100 for him to win but 10k for him to loose. No support, i say let them be jealous

    • Renegade

They deserve to lose their points.

  • Jonathan Hurd

    Thanks Toto, :D.

KICK HIS BUTT LHC! Lightening thrust Tornado Strike, lol.

  • Ragnarok

I was really hoping the battle would conclude this chapter. We need a summoner to bring out some more sponsors

  • kirindas

    Thanks for the new chapter!

  • kirindas

    Thanks for the new chapter!

  • Luke Confidential

    Alright, I am wondering guys.

What sort of odds would you give Yang Wenzhao of dealing with this Peak 5th Step Warrior, with the aid of his Starlight Unicorn?

    • Robin

      I wouldn’t bet on him. ^^

      • Luke Confidential

At 30 to 1 odds I might, but it wouldn’t be a huge amount.

        • Jonathan Hurd

That is the beauty of 30 to 1. You don’t believe he will win, but your brain just keeps saying “Well if he does…. we get rich….”

          • Luke Confidential

Oh I believe he’s got a fair chance. I think I’d probably put Yang Wenzhao with the Starlight Unicorn at about 70% odds [as opposed to LHC’s 90]

    • Viv Lih

Under the same conditions as the betting stand they opened, I’d bet the same as what Duan Yi and Yang Wenzhao bet. With the Starlight Unicorn, he has maybe a 60% chance of winning, I’d guess, even with the difference in level, since the warrior would be stuck on the ground.

To tell the truth, the two captains bet very smartly. Should the warrior win, the 100 they bet on LHC would be insignificant, and should LHC win, they’d make nearly three times the amount they bet in total.

      • carlo arcenal

But then they’d lose the ten thousand they had bet on the opponent right and only gain 3000 from the bet they bet on lhc so they would still lose 7000 cp from the bet they bet on the opponent.

        • Luke Confidential

Bet Hedging like this is only really useful if you know who is supposed to win but you’re concerned about outlying possibilities.

          • Viv Lih

XD That’s the point. The two captains thought they knew who was going to win, but they were concerned about the wild card the LHC is in this case. They both realized the swindle, so they could only assume that LHC would too, and were worried that he had some tricks up his sleeve.

      • Luke Confidential

They bet *smartly* if they expected the Warrior to win but thought LHC might pull off a miracle.

Betting 300-400 on LHC and 10000 on the Warrior is pointless. The result is basically no gain.

If you can’t pick a winner don’t gamble.

        • Daene Kendrick

The safe bet would have been split it evenly 5k on each at 1:30 odds you stand to make a lot more if LHC wins he is the 1:30 underdog im sure they didnt give the warrior same odds proabably 30:1 odds

          • Luke Confidential

Good call, it didn’t occur to me to play the odds that way.

          • Daene Kendrick

Just speaking from my own thoughts i would set lower stakes for the winner being the Warrior showing that the warrior was the strongly favored fighter. Then low ball the odds for LHC thus increasing the chances of keeping the majority of the CP bid on the match.

      • Schattenbach

With the current betting ratio, even if they were unsure about Haochen’s
win, they should’ve betted something more along the lines of (for
example … there might be more beneficial splits) …

1000 points on Haochen’s win, 9000 points on that “fifth brother’s” win.

        Winning
them 21,000 contribution points in case of Haochen’s loss and making
them loss 700 contribution points in case he lost. They could even have
opted to only bet only something like 1,000 contribution points on
Haochen’s win (resulting in 1,000 loss if he fails and 30,000 gain if he
wins), even if it was just as an investment to build up trust.

        Honestly,
betting any contribution points at all on “fifth brother” -expect when
someone is absolutely sure of his win (and this shouldn’t be the case
for the first four) – is a stupid move as even when betting gambeling
10,000 contribution points, they would at best gain 333 additional
contribution points out of it (far too few when compared to what’s at
        stake).

After all, this was quite the oppoturnity for them …
what with all that small risk compared to huge gains. They had the chance
(in case of Haochen’s win) to leave the other six lower ranked newbie
Demon Hunting Squads in the dust, now (if the other squads didn’t waste
as much points) they’re the ones going to be left in the dusk, facing an
        incredible crisis.

        • Schattenbach

Winning them 21,000 contribution points in case of Haochen’s victory* fixed. Guess I was still a bit too sleepy while writing that post.

    • Schattenbach

I would give Yang Wenzhao odds that amount to 60% as long as he can use his mount as he pleases. He should be lacking quite a bit internal spiritual energy (at least 1000 points) as well as (but even more so) when it comes to both external spirutual energy and experience. His opponents equipment (armor aside) might be even better as his fancy personal equipment, so in that regard they break, at most, even. However, to make up for that, he not only got his own (likely vastly superior) talent but also got two spiritual stoves (his original evolved one which offers both offense and defense as well whatever spiritual stove he selected after the individual competition) as well as his high ranking flying mount.

  • VanillaCustardPie

    Thank you~

  • k1nk4

    thanks for the chapter!

  • Anto Wibowo

    Thank you for the chapter!

  • Viv Lih

I have another theory. Perhaps the reason why the 7th step Temple Knight referee was shocked was because he was one of the ones escorting the DHSs at Exorcist Pass?

    • Luke Confidential

Or he sees the resemblance to Daddy of Slaughter.

EDIT: seems unlikely though, Daddy Sheng was very familiar with said Daddy and didn’t see it.

      • Jonathan Hurd

Yeah, LHC looks way more like his mom than he does his dad.

      • Viv Lih

I’m sure he’ll get more manly when he’s older, but for him to be able to pass off as a maid in the Moon Demon God’s place… Probably looks more like his mom at this point. I agree that it’s more likely that he just heard rumors or something.

        • Luke Confidential

While we have plentiful context supporting your position, I want to point out that being able to pass as a maid alone doesn’t say he looks more like his mom than his dad.

It seems totally reasonable that with the fairness of youth Xinyu might have been able to pass as well.

          • Viv Lih

True enough, but for him to have been so beautiful as to make the princess of the Moon Demon Clan jealous means that at least some of his mother’s traits are present.

Besides, in the manga adaptation, he does look quite a bit like his dad after the art changes after the first few dozen chapters.

    • Dragon

Good theory vary posiable but if that was the case wouldn’t LHC recognize him?

    • Robin

I doubt this. The mythrill armoured knights sent as their escort were special. They would not conveniently be there to help out as referee of such a low level fight with no importance.

      • Renegade

The knight could be a knight from battle against the 3 demob gods who survived due to LHC and Haoyue.

        • Luke Confidential

That Knight Brigade were all 5th step. No way in hell would one of them be 7th step already.

EDIT: with the possible exception of their commander who may have been 6th step on the edge of a breakthrough.

          • Robin

Good point. I think the probability of him being a local and having heard about the young talent, maybe even kows about his involvement in the recent issue with the Mission Tower, is much higher. Haochen sat in the entrance of the Alliance’s administration building where everyone could see him. Although they won’t know any details, I am sure that something happened and that a young DHS was involved spread, if only as a rumor.

          • Renegade

Good point. Forgot they were mainly 5th.

      • Jonathan Hurd

They have stated that this 7th step knight belongs to a Demon Hunt Squad, that is why they can pay him for his time with Contribution points. I also think he might have been one of the Knights assigned and that is why he recognizes LHC from that time. I mean LHC being the Scion of Light is pretty high up news and is being kept under raps by the higher ups for now. This 7th step knight doesn’t seem high ranked enough to be privy to that kind of information so the only way I can imagine him recognizing LHC is that he has seen him before.

        • Robin

Of course he wouldn’t know about his status as Scion of Light. But I think he might know that Haochen won the DHS competition. He caused big waves then and since there were many people present and it is not necessarily a secret what happened then, it is possible for him to know about it.

          • Schattenbach

If he was there at the end of the Squad Competition, he might know several things more than that … that he obtained a light elemental fairy … that their squad defeated at least one enemy of the seventh step, ecetera.

          • Schattenbach

            that Haochen obtained*

          • Robin

Sorry, I incidentally meant the first part before the training began. Because from the oint on the DHSs were put together it was still a competition between those ten, but not the same kind of competition as before the assignment. Of course, if he was at Exorcist City he may know even more but if not he still knows that Haochen is one of the strongest condidates among the new generation.

    • Viv Lih

Now that I’m rereading the chapter for about the seventh time, I feel as if the referee might have some way of telling the step and/or age of LHC, hence the shock. It seems more likely than him recognizing LHC anyways.

  • Dragon

Time for people’s jaws to hit the floor when LHC owns this newb

    • Luke Confidential

Let the jawbones hit the floor
Let the jawbones hit the floor
Let the jawbones hit the floor
Let the jawbones hit the…. FLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOR

  • Luke Confidential

I stand by my theory that LHC is capitalizing on his ridiculous Mana Recovery Rate and Ripples of Light amplifying low level techniques to wear this guy out of Internal Spiritual Energy.

    • Daene Kendrick

I dont even think he is using Ripples of Light yet. Skills have different levels of mastery. If you master the technique of a low level skill and thus use it with your higher strength skill and mastery of the technique it becomes like a high level technique with almost no cost to use. He hasnt summoned HY or Y yet because he wants to feel out his opponent and then at the most opportune time summon his trump cards to end the match in dramatic fashion.

      • Luke Confidential

It is true that his affinity to light reduces the cost for techniques as well.

      • Renegade

        Can he summon Haoyue?

Would be unfair since warrior can’t summon.

        • Robin

No, it wouldn’t. The mount counts as part of a knight’s strength.

          • Jonathan Hurd

The other thing is that not including LHC the best way to avoid fighting a Knights mount is just never give the Knight a chance to summon him. LHC of course being the exception since he has the blood pact.

        • Daene Kendrick

He is a Knight his mount is within his chosen profession ability he can use it

          • Schattenbach

And it’s not the knight’s fault that their profession is the higher ranked one due to them being just that much more useful.

        • Luke Confidential

Warrior has the same Internal Energy Pool and- in normal cases- WAAAAY more External Spiritual Energy compared to a Knight.

Would be unfair if Knights could NOT summon their mount.

        • Schattenbach

Now that I think about it … since that “fifth brother” should know that his opponent is a knight, that item he obtained from his team might actually be something that’s used to interrupt / cancel summons or to send them back or to outright injure them (if they’re magical beasts, I guess) / restrain them. Taking Haochen’s mount out of the equation (the only uncertainity from their teams point of view) would make Haochen (from his point of view) so much inferior to him that he could just stomp him.

          • Robin

But their contract is special so it is not easy to block the summon. If that is his plan he will be surprised.

          • Renegade

Very good point. Never thought about that. I hope we find out in the chapter being released today.

    • Jonathan Hurd

Well of course. Nobody uses their trump cards straight off the bat you have to feel the opponent out first. LHC has also been raised with Guardian Knight fighting in mind. So he knows it is stupid to waste energy when not needed. He has also seen what happens if he chooses to use his techniques badly like when he used his Revolving Sword Condemning Strike against that peaked 6th step dark green Dual bladed demon.

      • Luke Confidential

Yes, he could just be fighting cautiously.

I believe he’s intentionally wearing down his opponent’s energy reserves though.

        • Robin

And he is testing the waters before revealing his true strength. His opponent also still doesn’t know if he is a guardian or a retribution knight. Haochen definitely has the advantage so far. And he still has Blue Rain, Hibiscus of Light, Yating and Haoyue as his trump cards.

          • Luke Confidential

Have you read the preview yet? 😛

          • Robin

Yep, I did. In the next chap he reveals being a retribution knight, or at least fighting like one, and does even more. But my point still stands, he still has the advantage of Yating and Haoyue not being summoned yet. 😉

        • Jonathan Hurd

It makes sense since he has Yating and Eternal Melody. He can use these low ranked retribution abilities infinitely and not lose energy.

          • Luke Confidential

Reminds me of the current battle going on in the Korean webtoon, The Gamer.

          • Evilage

            Oh yah
            unlimited mana xD
in some aspects both battles are similar isnt it?

  • Renegade

Funny how the captains bet little on LHC and act like LHC bet 10,000 was crazy. When in truth they bet 10,000 against him.

A part of me says fight will be stopped by ref. if LHC gets serious the other guy is done for.

    • Jonathan Hurd

To be fair they bet the 10k against him assuming he would lose. They didn’t realize he had that much confidence and that is why they wanted to change their bets.

      • Luke Confidential

The worst part is they know how humble/sincere/committed LHC is from his behavior during the Knight Preliminaries.

They should know he wouldn’t be here just to test his luck.

  • lordcattank

thank you very much for the chapter

  • Yorkshire

after 5 days of constant reading i finally found the end ….. and it fells so empty

    • Luke Confidential

You have not found the end. You have only found the middle.

      • Yorkshire

by the length of the story this is barely a quarter

        • Luke Confidential

Did I say ‘half’ or ‘center’?

‘Middle’ is much broader than that. It’s the space between the beginning and the end.

          • Evilage

this novel should have around 900-1000 chapters
so i’d say a quartar is done

          • ShelfCloud

I calculated the total amount some time ago. What I got were 308 parts with 877 chapters.

    • Robin

As they said, you have reached the latest chap but there is still much more to come. And since the novel is finished and Totobro is really dedicated, you only have to enjoy the new releases from here on.

  • agila0212

Thank you for the chapter 🙂

  • Allstarall

You see, in stories, people always want it to go faster and see the end, but when it ends that fast, or ends at all, people feel depressed. Thus the paradox of what to want in stories.

  • Zeth

Thank you very much Totobro and sponsors!

  • ZaX

He’s holding back so much. Thanks for the chapter

  • Schattenbach

Maybe Haochen will end up being generous and, after those two squads wasted their money betting on Haochen’s opponent, loan these two squads 10,000 points so that they can upgrade to general grade.

Or Lin Xin’s going to play the loan shark here …

    • Alex Drake

They bet against him. He doesn’t owe them jack

      • Schattenbach

I know, but then again, it won’t hurt to build up trust (and own favours, of course) by petting an injured dog. And those contribution points he would be lending them are all the more valuable because they wasted them in such a manner, making the favours they own him because of that all the bigger as a result (especially if the teamleaders decided upon this whole fiasco upon themselves or not everyone in their team agreed with their choice, then this great setback so early on might rip apart each of these two teams or create create long-term internal strife or a toxic climate).

Not to mention, both of these knights (well, and their other squad members, I guess, but especially these two knights) are likely going to be bighshots in the future, so them owning him favours isn’t a bad thing at all.

Not to mention … the other sixth squads don’t seem important at all but the top 4 squads look like they’re going to play a huge roll over the course of Haochen’s life within the alliance’s territory.

        • Schattenbach

          role*

          • Jonathan Hurd

To be fair just because they aren’t going into their names now doesn’t mean they won’t later. Right now 5th brother and the rest don’t respect LHC enough to give his name. After getting his but kicked I think that will probably change. Besides they have gone into way more details about this squad than they have about even Duan Yi’s. I can’t imagine this ending without LHC seeing the 8th General Grade DHS again.

          • Luke Confidential

Of course not. They’ll be licking LHC and Lin Xin’s boots begging to be let off of the bet and- after that fails- begging to be allowed to borrow the points back to promote.

        • Robin

If you look at it, the two DHS leaders fell for the trap to waste their CP all the same. Only that they won’t loose their CP while fihgting a battle, but betting and loosing a big deal.

          • Schattenbach

Yeah. Haochen used the anti-newcomer trap to his own advantage and Lin Xin and Lux Xi decided to activate their counter-trap card to bring in even more profit (while making other older DH Squads refrain from abusing their juniors in the future because they might actually end up losing).

This still shouldn’t prevent Haochen’s group from helping these two squads out of their misery. They (and humanity) only stand to lose if those two elite newbie squads have a too large setback like that while helping them to overcome that setback by supporting them in reaching general grade has various benefits for Haochen and his squad.

          • Robin

I agree, and he probably will, because they learned a lesson after this and as he said: “Other people’s contribution points really weren’t worth worrying about.”
Theey have so many CP and also received help at some point that he surely will be open for an agreement.

          • Evilage

The again, author was too lazy to name them. If the author was gonna make them owe favors i believe he would atleast give them names

          • Robin

            Good point ^^

          • Schattenbach

I looked up at how the things of each of these teams the way they’ve been described are… I don’t think we even have any names for any of those DHS members who aren’t in the four top squads (although the four squads took basically nearly everyone that was noteworthy, anyway):

            2. DHS:

Knight: Yang Wenzhao (second most talented knight, retribution knight of the 5th step, possesses two spiritual stoves, with the Starsea Stove being powerful and evolved, as well as
an starlight unicorn thats even more powerful as Haoyue was during the competition)
Priest: ? (some reasonably decent priest of the fourth step)
Mage: Huang Yi (talented Earth Elemental Mage of the 5th step, ranked amongst the best of his respective Temple – would’ve possibly been ranked higher in his temple ranking if
not for the fact that Lin Xin bribed him with drugs – and in possession of his earth elemental fairy stove)
Assassin: ? (some reasonably decent assassin of the fourth step)
Summoner: Liao Yu (the summoner twenty year old summoner who entered the top eight and nearly finished Haochen with his Savage Beast Summoning, the true number one among summoners
as well as the only one having reached the fifth step, being ranked amongst the best of his respective Temple)
Warrior: ? (some reasonably decent warrior of either of either the fourth or fifth step)

            3. DHS:

Knight: Duan Yi (talented Guardian Knight of the 5th step that’s comparable to Yang Wenzhao in terms of talent and with the outstanding Golden Horned Mammoth, that surpasses the
starlight unicorn in terms of power, as mount)
Priest: ? (Not in top 16, not exactly noteworthy)
Mage: ? (Not in top 16, not exactly noteworthy)
Assassin: Mu Ning (talented Assassine of the fourth step with one or, possibly, two spiritual stoves, that managed to get the top 3 spot through luck)
Summoner: Fang Zhu (the summoner at the fourth step who formerly summoned the gigantic bear against Cai’er)
Warrior: ? (Not in top 16, not exactly noteworthy)

            4. DHS:

Knight: Li Xin (potent retribution knight of the 4th step with formadible Rose Unicorn)
Priest: Luc Xi (only priest of the fifth step during the competition)
Mage: don’t remember his name? (rarely-seen mage of the spatial attribute with – according to the chapter he was selected in, however I’m not exactly sure if that’s really the case – strength at the peak of the fifth step)
Assassin: don’t remember his name? (Assassin of the fourth step that also entered the top 16)
Summoner: Bai Xiaomo (Talented botanical summoner of the fourth step that entered the top 16)
Warrior: don’t remember his name? (Shield warrior of the fifth step, who, as warrior, possesses strength second only to Wang Yuanyuan and who who entered the top eight)

            ? = I don’t remeber having read anything about those …

            Leftover for other teams …
1? knight of the fifth step …
0 Priests of the fifth step
0 summoners of the fifth step (all of them inferior to those in first four teams)
? mages of the fifth step (all of them inferior to those in first four teams)
? warriors of the fifth step (inferior to those in the two teams above that have confirmed warriors of the 5th step, though there actually might’ve been a few warriors of the 5th step due there being so many warriors around)
0 assassins of the fifth step (all of the remaining ones are at best inferior to those in first four teams)

          • Sarlisark

there is no 5th step knight left I believe, in the Knight competion there were 3 fifth step knights, but one screwed up and stayed as knight only because of LHC, so the other 2 are yang and Duan

          • Schattenbach

That’s not correct. During the knight temple’s competition, there once was this arrogant guardian knight bearing the number #4 (meaning that he was the fourth ranked knight … and as his number was assigned within the original top ten, there were at least four knights of the 5th step back then, before Haochen reached the 5th step). That knight (unnamed) was even mentioned over the course of the invidual competition of the DHS selection just to point out how many strong people the knight temple produced thus far, so he/she really should be a member of one of those squads we don’t know much about.

          • Sarlisark

then i concur, i thought there wer only three but it seems there were 4.

          • Schattenbach

To clarify (because my post above was somewhat ambigious in that regard as I didn’t word it very clearly) … Han Yu was the #4 ranked guardian knight (and that knight we still don’t really know much about expect that he exists, is the “That knight (unnamed)” I was refering to), so in addition to the other three we know (that are the captains of the first three DH Squads) there’s still a fifth knight of the 5th step in one of these teams.

          • Schattenbach

in one of these remaining six teams.*

        • Alex Drake

Would they do the same for LHC? no they wouldn’t. They would go: “well you shouldn’t have accepted that bet with the guy who was stronger than you” Your view is a naive one

  • Count Grey

    Thanks for the chapter 🙂

    Welcome to Xin Lending.
