Shen Yin Wang Zuo, Chapter 268

Shen Yin Wang Zuo, Chapter 268: Lin Xin’s counterattack!(III)

At this time, a group of thirty years-old-looking men and women stood at the entrance of the Demon Hunt Transaction Center, discussing together.

“Fifth brother, we are only missing ten thousand contribution points to advance from the general grade to the commander grade. With boss training in seclusion, we are for now unable to run missions to gain these. How about selling some equipment to try to gather these 10,000 points?” A slim middle-aged person clad in a wind-elemental magic robe asked.

The one he called fifth brother was a sturdy man, with a robust build. With his height over two meters, his broad shoulders and the martial attire he was clad in, his entire body’s muscles stretched taut, but surprisingly, only his eyes were very little.

His eyes were occasionally flashing bright.

“How could it be so easy? We are speaking about 10,000 contribution points! Boss told us that he would go train in seclusion, so what if he suddenly had a need for some equipment or medicine? Everyone is impatient to advance to the commander grade, but how much would we have to sell if we want to make such an amount? It will definitely weaken our strength. Even if we successfully advance to the commander rank, how would we complete missions with our strength weakened like this? Third brother, don’t come up with such rotten ideas.”

They were a total of three people, with a girl among their group. This girl was clad in a robe of summoner, smiling at what she heard, “It doesn’t mean we can absolutely not accomplish this. If we manage to advance to the commander grade earlier, our strength will rise greatly. Out of the ten newly formed Demon Hunt Squads of five years ago, only six of us are left. The others have all already advanced to the commander grade, so we are the only ones left.”

The robust warrior they called third brother asked in a low voice, “Sixth sister, do you have a way?”

That girl’s appearance was average but she had a sharp look. In a low voice, she replied, “I have a way. Do you remember about what happened half a year after we became a newly formed Demon Hunt Squad? If not for that experience, how would we still not have advanced to the commander grade? We are not even lacking compared to the others.”

Her fifth brother unhappily replied, “Say no more about that bastard that swindled us, robbing us of all our hardly accumulated points. This was my fault for having been so impulsive. This experience even affected my mental, leaving a shadow behind me. Because of this, I’m still even now stuck in the bottleneck of the sixth step, unable to break through at all.”

“At that time, he swindled our Demon Hunt Squad, giving us a good lesson, and trampling on our integrity. When we complained to the Alliance, we hadn’t even gotten a single response. Since the Alliance doesn’t care, just let them be! Don’t tell me we cannot do the same!?”, said their sixth sister.

Their fifth brother’s eyes were lit, “Are you thinking of…”

The girl nodded and continued, “The new batch of Demon Hunt Squads should have already started completing mission. Maybe we will still have a chance. As long as we scrape enough contribution points, and if you try a little harder to break through to the sixth step, we will immediately be able to climb to the commander grade when boss gets back.”

The third brother wrinkled his brows, “This won’t do! We cannot show such a behavior: wouldn’t it be no different from what those guys did?”

The girl smiled in response, “Third brother, this is incorrect. It’s not necessarily a bad thing that we’ll be doing. After having experienced this tragedy, we were a lot more cautious when carrying out mission. You shouldn’t forget that the other Demon Hunt Squads that were split up because of casualties weren’t any lacking compared to us, but we were the ones who lived through. Thus, this experience was also a good thing for us.”

The fifth brother laughed and replied, “That’s right, sixth sister is not wrong. It’s a good deed we are doing by helping those newly formed Demon Hunt Squads to grow on the mental aspect. There’s just one thing sixth sister: where could we find newly formed Demon Hunt Squads?”

The girl stuck out her lips to another direction, telling in a low voice, “Look, aren’t they coming this way?”

The fifth brother looked at the direction she pointed, and really saw a dozen people walking at the direction of the Transaction Center. Their age was already a proof of their identity; leading them were a boy and a girl that looked like they weren’t even twenty in age, and yet, that youth was holding the girl in his arms.

“Fifth brother, the time to make up for your previous mistake has come. Do to these newcomers the same as what they did to us at that time.”

A glint appeared in the fifth brother’s eyes, “Okay, I’m going. Just wait for my good news outta here.”

As he said this, the fifth brother walked forward with spirited and vigorous steps, in the direction of that dozen young boys and girls.

Their target was no one else but the 21st general grade Demon Hunt Squad and the 4th soldier grade Demon Hunt Squad.

Long Haochen was about to reach the Transaction Center with his group, when suddenly, a sturdy man appeared in their path.

“Younger brother, hello. You are newly formed Demon Hunt Squads right?” The fifth brother stopped Long Haochen, saying this with a smile.

Long Haochen unconsciously nodded. They had already advanced to the general grade, but it was still accurate to say that they were a newly formed Demon Hunt Squad.

The fifth brother declared with a smile, “Yes, as I thought. It’s like this, the Mission Tower’s side asked us to look for you, to assign you an internal mission exclusive to your Demon Hunt Squads.”

“Hello mister. We are coming back right from a mission, how could they already send us another mission?” Long Haochen asked with some doubts.

The fifth brother chuckled, “Don’t worry. It looks that you have run into quite big troubles during your last mission. Rest at ease, this mission isn’t any dangerous; it is an internal mission, which can be treated as a test for newly formed Demon Hunt Squads like yours.”

The two Demon Hunt Squads stopped over. They could only felt suspicious at hearing this five brother’s words. However, the Demon Hunt Transaction Center wasn’t a place anyone could go in. It was located in the same area as the Demon Hunt Squads’ villas, and its entrance was guarded by powerhouses. It wouldn’t be easy for people that don’t belong to Demon Hunt Squads to go in there.

As this fifth brother said this, he revealed the contribution point tile in his left arm, and said, “This is my contribution point tile. I am the warrior from the 8th general grade Demon Hunt Squad. They call me fifth brother, so you can call me by this name too.”

Seeing this contribution tile, the hesitations of Long Haochen’s group were greatly dissipated. Since the other party was a Demon Hunter, it was a fellow soldier, which naturally decreased their alert by far.

“Mister, has the Mission Tower assigned us with another mission?” Long Haochen asked.

Fifth brother replied, “The mission is very simple. I am the object of your mission. In view of your exceptional performance in your last mission, the Mission Tower decided to give you an internal mission. This mission can be called a reward mission. If you can complete it, you will obtain a great reward of contribution points: it consists on staking your own contribution points as gamble and choose someone amongst you to challenge me. If you win, you will immediately earn ten times these contribution points.”

Hearing him, Long Haochen’s comrades were eager to give it a try; this was a ten times reward! And furthermore, they had a good confidence towards Long Haochen’s power.

But Long Haochen’s response wasn’t hurried, only politely asking, “Mister, we should be able to choose whether to accept this mission or not, shouldn’t we? Seeing that you are a member of the 8th general grade Demon Hunt Squad, how could juniors like us be a match for you? This mission simply doesn’t give us any chance at all.”

Seeing Long Haochen’s firm look, fifth brother felt greatly ashamed. But thinking about being able to raise to the commander grade of Demon Hunt Squad, he immediately threw off this guilty feeling, resolutely replying, “Rest at ease on that, the Mission Tower wouldn’t give you a mission you are totally unable to accomplish. Although I am a member of the eighth general grade Demon Hunt Squad, I am the weakest member of the team, only at the fifth step of cultivation. Since I haven’t broken through the sixth step of cultivation yet, you will have a chance, and furthermore, I will not use my weapon during this duel. Of course, you can choose not to accept this mission. Though, you have a single chance, so you won’t be able to take it again later.”

“Boss, go against him. He’s only at the fifth step, so we should still have a chance at it.” Lin Xin whispered in a low voice at Long Haochen’s ears.

Luc Xi remained calm and collected, as he stated, “Mister, can you give us a proof that you are at the fifth step of cultivation? And will you bring your stake?”

Fifth brother smiled to them, “Of course I will bring it. However, according to the rules of the mission, the contribution points you take out cannot be inferior to 1,000. If I win, this will be considered as my reward for the execution of the mission. But I can’t intervene for a too low stake either. During the duel, we can have the contribution points we gambled acknowledged to the side of the Alliance’s Great Stadium. Only then shall we start the match. You are really cautious, youngsters, are you afraid of me deceiving you or what?

Luc Xi revealed a smile, “Many thanks to you, mister. But we gained these contribution points with difficulty, so we are of course careful about it. Let us discuss it for a moment, before we decide on whether we accept this mission or not, is that be okay?”

Fifth brother nodded, “Of course it’s okay. I’ll be waiting for you there; you can look for me after thinking about it between yourselves.” As he said this, he turned around and walked to the other direction.

After fifth brother left, Lin Xin immediately told Long Haochen in excitement, “Boss, such a chance! It’s a ten time contribution point rewards! If we manage to beat him, we will have over a million contribution points in the end.”

Long Haochen unhappily replied, “Are you dreaming? How could meat pie rain from the sky? I felt that this mister ‘fifth brother’ was really suspicious: if this was a mission from the Mission Tower, it should have been given to us through a staff member. But he directly looked for us. And your thinking is not reasonable. He belongs to a general grade Demon Hunt Squad, so if they had a million contribution points, wouldn’t they have relied on it to get promoted to the commander grade, instead of giving us this mission?”

“Haochen, you are really clever. This guy has come to swindle us of our contribution points.” Luc Xi said with a grotesque smile on his face.

“Mh?” Long Haochen looked hesitatingly at Luc Xi.

Luc Xi declared in a low voice, “This is a method for veteran Demon Hunt Squads to bully newly formed ones, which the Alliance won’t care about. They pretend that it can strengthen newly formed Demon Hunt Squads’ vigilance. This trick isn’t really a clever one, but after a challenging mission, a tenfold reward is just too enticing to some of the newly formed Demon Hunt Squads that have just gotten to realize how precious contribution points could be. Thus, quite a few newly formed Demon Hunt Squads are taken in. One of my seniors is a Demon Hunt Squad member that also went through this.”

Lin Xin was dumbstruck, “Then it’s a swindler? Is he not afraid of us denouncing him?”

Luc Xi raised up his shoulders, “What use would there be to denounce him? The fifth step of cultivation isn’t something that one can fake, you know!?”

  • Luke Confidential

Heh, so this is the angle.

If they go through the Stadium, I don’t see how this can end poorly [for the youngsters.] Not with LHC on the field =D

EDIT: pretty ironic neither team would have fallen for it alone though. LHC had his OP MC perception/insight, and Luc Xi had second hand knowledge.

EDIT 2: Actually… I’m thinking the Stadium probably uses the same format as the tournaments. That would mean LHC could bring Austin Griffon to bear… oh that poor huckster lol. Austin Griffon+LHC could probably handle three members of their team at once.

    • ShelfCloud

With LHC and Hao Yue that can only be a massacre… He really does not have the slightest chance.

      • Jonathan Hurd

I would say three members of their team versus LHC and Hao Yue sans fusion. Four members if we add fusion and the ripples of light, mwhahahahaha.

  • ShelfCloud

Thank you very much for the chapter!

    And, oh these poor idiots….

    • Luke Confidential

Yeah… that ‘no weapon clause’ is icing on the cake.

EDIT: Now that I think about it… even the freaking priest on LHC’s team could probably handle this guy when he doesn’t use any weapons to deal with Madness+Ripples of Light.

  • Jonathan Hurd

First thank you so much for second chapter Toto.

KICK HIS BUTT LHC! KICK IT TILL HE CRIES MOMMY!

    • ShelfCloud

Or until they can forget to become a commander grade squad anytime soon. Goodbye points! XD

      • Luke Confidential

Best bet to milk the most out of these people would be to keep LHC out of it [too overpowering.]

Sima Xian first, then Wang Yuanyuan, then Han Yu.

        • Jonathan Hurd

I honestly am not sure anyone but LHC could probably deal with him. The difference in experience and skills would probably be too great for Sima or Wang Yuanyuan. Also Sima and Han Yu still don’t have weapons since they were destroyed and they were interrupted before going into the command tower.

          • Luke Confidential

Ah, yeah. Without their gear they’d be screwed.

As for Sima and Han Yu, they’ve got Ripples of Light and they’re up against an opponent of the same Step.

Wang Yuanyuan has Brokentier shield. [I forget, did she successfully adapt Ripples of Light to Spacial Magic or not?]

EDIT FOR CLARITY: I never meant to say the other team-members would be a guaranteed win but rather that in my mind they have better than 50% odds.

LHC is just a slaughter lol.

          • Jonathan Hurd

They haven’t mentioned yet if she figured it out or not. Same for Li Xin. I think we will be finding out pretty soon. If not she might spend these months of downtime on that.

  • Luke Confidential

‘I will not use any weapon during this duel’

I want to see Sima Xian kick his ass.

    • I rectified this from ‘any weapon’ to ‘my weapon’.
Litteral TL was ‘any’ but I believe it may be necessary to interpret it as ‘my’, because even that knight of the seventh step they got as a leader used a weapon, just not his main one. Or I may just be overthinking this, but either way, I finally prefer turning it this way ^.^

      • Luke Confidential

Ah, so he may use a generic weapon provided by the Stadium. Makes sense, and it’s less of a nerf.

        • he may or may not. It just depends on what he meant since he didn’t make it so clear.

          • Jonathan Hurd

Him saying “I will beat you with my bare hands!” sounds funny but seems impractical since it seems that most of the physical skills need you to be using some sort of weapon.

          • Schattenbach

So he’s wording it unclear to make it easier to trick them with the typical “I never said that I wouldn’t use any weapon”, huh?

  • Luke Confidential

Alright guys, am I the only one who wants to see LHC go up to bat for this contest, and wager 100k on 1v1 against a 5th stepper who isn’t using his primary weapon?

Just to see the looks on their faces when he places the bet.

    • Jonathan Hurd

Honestly that might be a bit too mean. Though they were trying to steal LHC’s points. They might actually do that and then make a deal where 5th brothers team gets to upgrade to commander but they go on a joint mission with LHC’s team and LHC gets all the points from that.

      • Luke Confidential

LHC is kind, but his kindness does not extend to the wicked.

I could totally see him doing this, just to set them straight.

        • Jonathan Hurd

It is admittedly hard to feel sympathy towards a bunch of people who were trying to rip you off. I think LHC is too kind though to bankrupt them. What makes me laugh the hardest though is if they just went and asked LHC and made a deal like LHC did with Luc Xi I don’t think he would have said no.

          • Luke Confidential

Indeed. I have no doubt LHC would have accepted that deal if made openly and honestly.

        • Stephen_H

I agree with you here, LHC has been shown to have a disdain for the dishonest and would take it upon himself to correct their erroneous ways…

          I think they are going to wager 15 – 20 K CP

  • Luke Confidential

    Just read the preview >_<

    Modest LHC is Too Modest.

But I guess that's a top quality knight for you, humble to the core.

    • Jonathan Hurd

If it is in the official arena then there is definitely going to be a referee. Also it is more like a spar even if there is a bet, so there is no reason to kill one another especially since they are both humans and have no grudge.

I think LHC is being cautious which is smart. The other party offered first so he must have confidence in himself. While LHC is more powerful than your average person and has taken down 6th to 7th step demons you have to remember those demons had no equipment to augment themselves. Even if this 5th brother doesn’t use his weapons he never said he would not use his armor and/or spiritual stoves he might have. Add to that he might have pills it is still a risky thing that should not be head long run into. Though I am also fairly sure no amount of preparation can prepare someone to fight LHC at this point, lol.

      • Luke Confidential

Big Bro has Drugs, a Berserk pill, a Bursting Spiritual Pill, a few Spiritual Replenishing Pills… LHC can totally bring the pills just in case.

        • Jonathan Hurd

Definitely. 😀 Its just something to keep in mind this is far from an assured thing. This 5th step warrior might be a harder battle than some of the 6th steppers LHC has fought.

          • Luke Confidential

I just raised an interesting topic for discussion as a new independent comment.

Meet me near the top of the comments.

          • Pemdas

What if LHC can use his mount? I’m pretty sure that will even the odds

          • Luke Confidential

Austin Griffon would eat 5th brother.

          • Jonathan Hurd

Now I kind of want to see just 5th brother versus Hao Yue, hahahaha.

          • Jonathan Hurd

I think they will let LHC use his mount considering how much this resembles the strong bullying the weak already. He has no clue how powerful Hao Yue is so he is going to be in for a rude awakening.

  • Jonathan Hurd

Okay so betting time for ourselves. How much will LHC put up (because lets be honest LHC is definetly going in). So we know LHC’s team currently has 160k Contribution points on them. That is counting the killing demons 20k and the missions final 140k. There is posibility that the fourth demon hunt squad will want in on the action and bet on LHC as well adding the 4th’s 70,000. So the maximum bid if they go all in between both of them would be 210k. Max I think their opponents can have is about 1 million since that sounds like the requirement to go Commander. So highest LHC can bet is 100k I would guess. This is just my guess so feel free to bet a higher value if your feeling it.

My personal bet is 50k points from LHC’s team. Then Luc Xi’s might go in for their own 50k betting on him.

    • Luke Confidential

Considering General takes 10k, and most general missions average 10k in rewards, I HIGHLY doubt Commander costs more than 200k

Probably in the vicinity of 100k.

Keep in mind they were talking like 10k was a big deal.

      • Jonathan Hurd

I’m working under the assumption that there is a 10x amplification for the bet. So if LHC did put up 200k and won they would be receiving 2 million contribution points in return.

        • Luke Confidential

Read it again Jon >_< There is no amplification.

This is a scam. The only winnings to be had are those of the bet itself.

          • Jonathan Hurd

You sure? It seems like what they are going to have to do is give their wager to the Demon Hunt Committee who will hold onto both sides points and then give the spoils to the winner. The scam seems to be to make greed over take peoples caution but if they actually refuse to pay what they promise that is a crime and would be something they can take to the alliance.

That was also why Luc Xi made sure to say “And will you bring your stake?”

The other thing that stands out is “During the duel, we can have the contribution points we gambled acknowledged to the side of the Alliance’s Great Stadium. Only then shall we start the match.”

So from the sounds of it if 5th brother doesn’t present his promised 10x contribution points and give them to the Alliances Great Stadium to hold onto there is no fight. The scam is a classic lottery. They say “Look how much you’ll get if you win!” but your chances of winning are tiny and you lose the money if you don’t win.

          • Luke Confidential

I am very sure. Read it again more carefully. The multiplication was claimed to be paid by the Mission Tower.

The Mission Tower is not involved in this.

That stake Luc mentioned is the normal opposite part of the bet.

          • Jonathan Hurd

Oh yeah I realized that just now. Sneaky…

          • Luke Confidential

            Very sneaky.

And quite successful, since these guys got taken by it in the past as did one of Luc Xi’s seniors.

          • Jonathan Hurd

I think they can potentially sneak in a multiplication honestly. I mean LHC team needs the bet less than 5th brothers. So they could do something like “5th brother your so strong us betting 1:1 seems unfair since our chances of success are so low. How about you pay 10x our bet so if we win we get 10x that. That should be fine your not scared to lose to little old us right?”

Knowing Lin Xin he would do this in a heart beat, hehe.

          • Luke Confidential

Theoretically possible, but I don’t see it playing out that way lol.

EDIT: it also strikes me as being outside LHC’s character. I have no doubt he’d clean them out in a straight bet, but I seriously doubt he’d deceive and manipulate them that way.

          • Jonathan Hurd

That is why I put it down to Lin Xin to do it, hehe. Money obsessed big bro has drugs would milk the situation for all its worth. They also have so many points I think they need more incentive than a 1:1 before they would risk them in a fight like this.

          • Luke Confidential

1:2 I could possibly see playing out.

          • Jonathan Hurd

Milk them for all they’re worth Lin Xin! The fun part is that 5th brother is way more desperate for this than LHC is and he definitely feels he will not possibly lose. “As long as you don’t lose who cares how high the number goes” is going to be playing through his mind, hehe.

          • Schattenbach

Well .. if Haochen’s group actually bet something like 100,000 controbution points then that migth make him hestitate a bit because, well, this implies that that group is – or whatever reason – no small fry.

Anyway, the easiest way to confirm that this is a scam would’ve been that he actually didn’t confirm the identity (he likely doesn’t even know it until they tell him that) of these two newbie squads (as to make sure that they actually are the squads they’re “supposedly looking for” for the non-existent mission of the mission tower) … so they’re obviously just asking random people that look like both new demon hunting squads as well as like they might’ve contribution points (as these two groups headed to the transaction center, they should have money in their possession).

          • Stephen_H

What would be even more fun, is if one of LHC high ranking ‘Friends’ happen to be passing by and decides to officiate and enforce…..

          • Luke Confidential

Based on what I can see from the context of this chapter, I strongly suspect the 21st General Grade Squad and 4th Soldier Grade Squad hold more contribution points together than the squad that’s offering the gamble.

It’s distinctly possible the 21st General Grade Squad alone is more wealthy.

          • Robin

They probably are. And the fifth brother is acting without the consent of his team captain. Assumed that they don’t split their points equally, he only has his own contribution points and those of his two comrades at his command. It would be a lot if they had a big sum even when they ship together.

          • Robin

This is not true. When Haochen wins he will get ten times the amount he betted. This is their way to lure the young DHSs. There would be no one to agree if not for ten times the entered amount.

          • Luke Confidential

He is lying Robin. Read it more carefully. The claim he’s making is that the Mission Tower will multiply the bet by 10. The mission tower isn’t involved here.

          • Robin

Okay, you are right, this chap indeed tells it like this. But wait and see. They won’t get away that easily.

          • Luke Confidential

Of course they won’t get away easily.

I am fully hoping that LHC bets 100k and wipes them out.

          • Robin

            Just wait and see. ^_^

          • Luke Confidential

            But waiting is haaaaard T_T

          • Robin

I know. But it is definitely worth it! *pat*
And I am sure now it won’t be long.

          • Schattenbach

Not exactly. That “fifth brother” claimed that the mission tower would give out the increased amount (as mission reward), didn’t he?

So … as long as the mission tower won’t punish that squad for their empty promise they did while impersonating them (scam), they obviously is going to get away with simply paying the equal amount they’re going to bet as long as Haochen’s squad won’t force them to bet ten times the amounts they did.

          • Schattenbach

            *obviously are

Although that squad might actually be so daring as to actually bet that many contribution points (ten times) during that match because they think that they’re going to win.Or they get forced to pay Haochen everything that was promised to be paid to them afterwards by the authorities.

    • Nikola Mircevski

In non translated ver he bets 10k

  • Nicky

LHC just got 140k reward from the mission tower, if they were to bet 40k they would still have over 100k no matter what. But if they won 400k would be the winnings because fifth brother said ten times the amount bet. Either way totally worth a shot. Plus LHC should be fairly close to a radiant knight now.

    • Luke Confidential

Read more carefully. There shall be no multiplication.

    • 40k * 10 = 400 k yeah.

But objectively speaking, betting this much may be a bit foolish since it would arise the other party’s suspicions (a new squad making 40k points in 3 months? Hard to believe), and I don’t believe Long Haochen is so greedy.

      • Nicky

That Is true especially when he made 1k the minimum wager, he probably will not expect to much more then that…. but he could also think they will let money go to there heads and bet it all, after all ten times the amount you have is appealing.

    • killerwakka1

I don’t think they have 400k but i can be wrong since if they had 400k they should be able to advance to the next level. Besids I think the other party needs only 10k so I think they wouldn’t take more than they need and just brush it of as a maximum betting amount

  • Nicky

“If you win, you will immediately earn up ten times these contribution points.” Is that not reading carefully?

  • Renegade

Lmao!!! Trying to bully LHC. They are basically digging their own grave to advance now. Buahaha

  • Luke Confidential

So I just remembered an asset LHC has that hasn’t played a role yet in this story that should be of huge help in a Stadium Battle.

Anybody recall that Sheng-family skill that allows one to store a prepared technique to instantly unleash?

    • Jonathan Hurd

I’m pretty certain he used that in a fight…. during the assault on the demons supplies when he killed two Dark Green Dual Bladed demons guarding that carriage with two holy swords.

The problem with something like that is its good for preparation in ambushes and this is going to be an official match. LHC is not underhanded enough to try something like charging before the start and any half decent referee would spot that.

      • Luke Confidential

        To quote:

After using this ability, one could store in his body any ability he mastered, a bit like Storing Power worked, and after having stored it, one could instantly unleash it at any time. But during the time of storing, the user had to be in a half-meditating state, and his body couldn’t move, much less fight.

After completing this storing, the stored ability had to be unleashed within an hour or the stored spiritual energy would scatter by itself.

Did you think LHC wouldn’t have sufficient notice to store… say… that new technique he has that has the spacial locking attraction effect… prior to the match?

        • Jonathan Hurd

Oh I don’t doubt he could I just think he would consider it as an unfair edge. It would be kind of like a mage starting to cast a big spell before go was called. Or a summoner summoning their creature then entering.

I wasn’t sure if that lock was him or Hao Yue personally. I thought that was Hao Yue’s effect because LHC was pouring all his power into Asura Strike.

          • Luke Confidential

OF COURSE it’s ‘unfair.’ It’s a private skill of the top assassin clan.

          • Jonathan Hurd

True, but always remember “Honor is life!”

          • Luke Confidential

But these men have no honor!

On the subject of unfair… what about a mount that’s every bit as broken as you are, when most mounts are supplementary assets at best?

          • Jonathan Hurd

Oh I don’t disagree that they are part of his strength. I just feel that starting to prepare attacks before the fight has begun gives an advantage that is a bit too heavy to some of the casting professions. Sure abilities and equipment you own and bring is fine, but casting spells when your opponent has no chance to interrupt is a bit of a low blow.

          • Schattenbach

That skill won’t really work all that well for casting professions (or with technique-type skills), as their spells/skills apperantly aren’t suitable (so only professions like warriors, knights and assassins can actually make use out of it).

          • Jonathan Hurd

Oh I agree. I’m just saying if they allow LHC to prep his ability before a match then by that right shouldn’t they allow that for all the other casters? It seems like too big of an advantage since the biggest thing for melee types is to interrupt long casts. Now if we’re talking on a battle field all is fair and who cares as long as you win, but this is a competition and should at least be somewhat fair. That is why they don’t let knights or summoners begin with summoned mounts or mages with already cast defensive spells.

          • Robin

He won’t cheat like this. Haochen is pure to the core. He can be clever and trick others but he would not violate the ultimate standards of a knight in an official duel.

          • Jonathan Hurd

Those are my thoughts too. 😀

          • Renegade

With one Asura Strike, the guy goes down.

Wouldn’t mind see LHC show off his new skills and ripples of light again to confirm to all why he’s #1 commander.

  • kooG

dam.. this lin xin is a got dam idiot.. hes dam useless.. im so scared of hurting u so i cant cast offensive magic.. boohoohoo.. he totally doesnt deserve the elder sis..i thought she only wanted somene stronger then her.. or i think dont remember clearly

    • Luke Confidential

He is stronger than her. She’s still back at the 4th step.

      • Pemdas

I also doubt Li Xin can break Lin Xin’s defense.

        • Jonathan Hurd

Well considering she got the chance in the Demon Hunt Selection and couldn’t I think she still can’t.

          • Luke Confidential

Huh… neither can… penetrate… the defense of the other.

          • Schattenbach

That way, they at least avoid the hedgedoge dilemma and are thus much less likely to kickstart any kind of singularity-plot.

          • Luke Confidential

Huh, is THAT the REAL reason Sonic never hooked up with Amy, rather than a moral quandary regarding her mental age?

  • k1nk4

    thanks for the chapter!

  • Anto Wibowo

Free contribution points! Well, with a post trouble from the so called ‘boss’ i’m guessing.
    Thank you for the chapter!

    • Jonathan Hurd

How can there be trouble? Its a fair and square bet. Don’t tell me they are going to come crying because they tried to bully someone and lost. That is past pathetic.

      • Luke Confidential

Considering this is Xianxia, they probably will go crying because they lost when they tried to bully.

The beauty of this squad though, is their background xD. Can you imagine that ‘Boss’ trying to pull some shit, and Grandpa Sheng shows up?

        • Jonathan Hurd

The thing is though that this is still a Chinese story with a big emphasis on Face. It is bad enough that they are the elders trying to bully their juniors. Then losing and trying to complain about it? That is just throwing away every shred of self respect you have. I don’t know about the other members but the knight in the 8th General Grade Squad should not be able to press the issue.

  • VanillaCustardPie

    Thank you~

  • Viv Lih

Scenario of LHC accepting the bet-
He could ask for the match to be scheduled a few days from then, or even the next day, and then they can go buy that medicine that you can only take once, the one that raises your spiritual level by 1,000 units or something, and then arrive at the match as a 6th step. Since he is currently at about 3,500 units?, and assuming that the bottleneck for 6th step is 4,000, then he should be able to break through and beat this fifth brother’s ass with ease. This is assuming that when the fifth brother says that this is a once only chance, he means “decide now yes or no” instead of “fight right this instant”. Otherwise, as a knight, he should be allowed to summon his mount as in the Demon Hunt Selection, and he could just fuse with Hao Yue into a 6th step that way.

Also, remember that when the 7th step guy fought them, he was fighting the whole team, not just LHC, so this fifth brother might have meant that he’d fight with a standard-issue weapon, since he is not 7th step, but 5th step, and going 1:1. There is no way he’d go so far as to fight without a weapon at all. That’s just asking to be killed. After all, they are still at the same step, and almost all techniques for warriors and knights can only be used with a weapon of some sort.

    • Jonathan Hurd

Honestly there is no way he should accept an answer of “give us a second to run in and buy things”. Fifth brother needs the points soon and besides if LHC spends his points he will have less to bet. Also I think the roof to becoming a Radiant Knight is 5k units. I might be wrong on that though. The other thing is that would just put LHC at the bottle neck it still will probably take him time to break through and condense his spiritual cavities.

      • Viv Lih

True, but it would make him sound suspicious if he didn’t give them a chance to prepare. The fifth brother already acknowledged that they had just completed a difficult mission, so he has no reasonable justification to not allow them a chance to replace any equipment they may have lost. Furthermore, so long as they meet the 1000 point minimum he proposed, there is no problem between the situation and the rules of the so-called internal mission he gave them. It is the newbies’ choice on how much to bet, after all. He may not want them to spend points, but he really has no good reason to give them. Also, he said that the Mission Tower would not give them a mission they couldn’t complete. Not letting them go re-equip would be self-contradictory.

      • Luke Confidential

Don’t be so sure. LHC has already BEEN condensing his spiritual cavities because of the Sneaky [I mean Saint] Spiritual Stove.

Srsly the thing isn’t even rated very highly and its such a hack. Lets you forcibly tank intelligent enemies, pull a target towards you physically AND helps break through into the 5th and 6th steps.

      • Schattenbach

They still have enough time left to actually take on missions (on that note … WHY would they actually have any pressure to get to commander grade as soon as possible expect for the sake of their ambitions as well as their developed inferior complex that they didn’t progress as fast as they normally might have?), they just can’t (or don’t want to) do missions right now as their leader isn’t there right now.

        • Robin

It would be suicide to do missions without their team captain. So they are unable to go on missions until he returns. They are just overly eager to advance faster and probably want to surprise their captain. I guess he will be really mad when he learns about this.

          • Schattenbach

They could still do missions for 3,000 contribution points or so … if most of their members are at least at the sixth step (with the only one who isn’t actually being at the bottleneck to the sixth step), even missing half their team shouldn’t make them unable to complete reasonably easy missions.

          • Luke Confidential

My guess is that the Mission System is set up such that each grade of squad is only allowed to accept missions of its own grade. This protects the easy missions for the lower grade DHS.

          • Schattenbach

The minimum reward of general grade missions is still around 3,000 points, though.

          • Luke Confidential

Ah, I was thinking high reward Soldier Grade rather than low reward General Grade.

It depends on the vocation of their Boss. If he’s a Priest or Knight forget it. They could probably do fine without their assassin.

EDIT: I am assuming that they have either a Guardian Knight and Berserker Warrior or a Retribution Knight and a Shield Warrior. If both are on defense they’d be sorely lacking striking power.

          • Jonathan Hurd

The biggest thing to remember is that any mission that a Demon Hunt Squad goes on is going to carry danger since it involves demons in some way. No Squad can risk going out incomplete since that severely impacts their strength. It is much smarter to try to earn points in human territory through gambling or selling gear rather than risk death without everyone being present in demon territory.

          • Robin

I agree, they would normally only be allowed to accept missions of their grade or join a mission of a DHS of a higher grade like the 4th DHS did.
And the risk is simply too high. If they take on a mission without their whole team it raises the danger of someone dying and then the DHS is broken. No one with a clear mind would risk this without dire need.

          • Schattenbach

And yeah … their captain should be quite mad at them, especially if they actually end up losing and/or getting punished for their scam.

    • Schattenbach

That pill cannot be used to break through a bottleneck (though with his light elementary fairy + his evolved stove + his internal spiritual energy, he might actually break through directly) as the bottleneck to the next step is at 4000 points. (So, in terms of internal spiritual energy, Haochen is reasonably close to his opponent in strength … no idea how things are in regard to his external spiritual energy, but that warrior should be significantly more as when compared to Haochen).

However, that bet is obviously kind of unfair (or would be without Haochen & Co being as broken as they are) as in that most members of newly formed demon hunting squads (especially if they’re young looking) should most be at the fourth step (so at most around 2000 points internal spiritual energy) or at best somewhere in the low-middle ranks of the fifth step (around 2500 – 3000). Moreover, five years of gathering contribution points should’ve made their equipment increase in strength quite a lot when compared to newly formed squads, so that’s a obvious disadvantage as well.

As they might actually come back from a troublesome mission, they might also be wounded and have their equipment damaged, so not letting them replace that would be even more unfair.

      • Schattenbach

Sufficient wealth might also make pills affordable … Against opponents of the 4th step, there would have been … this:

[“This is an item produced by master Lin, the Jade Body Protection
Pill: a pill at the peak of the third step’s level. After using it, for a
quarter of an hour, the external spiritual energy dedicated to the
body’s defense will be increased by 500 units. The skin of the user will
became as hard as steel, and it will improve physical attacks as well
as magical ones. This is not the first time the Jade Body Protection
Pill has been up for sale, so I won’t say much to introduce it. In the
battlefield, possessing a pill of this kind is almost equivalent to
having another life. The starting price will be a thousand gold coins.
Each bid must be at least 50 gold coins higher than the previous.”

The external spiritual energy dedicated to the body’s defense could
be increased by 500 units? Even if this amplified spiritual energy couldn’t be used to attack, what did 500 extra units of external
spiritual energy imply? It implied that almost any attack of the fourth
step or lower could be rendered ineffective. To top it off, this effect
lasted for a quarter of an hour.]

        It
wouldn’t be strange to assume that there are higher tier versions out
there ready to buy for whoever is looking for them. Warriors possess
quite a bit of external spiritual energy to begin with …

    • Robin

Haochen won’t fuse with Haochen in front of others without dire need for his life. Why should he make this ability public which is so strange and special that it could raise suspicion in others. As far as we learned, there are no other mounts who can fuse with their partnered knight.

  • lordcattank

thank you very much for the chapter

  • Dragon

Poor poor fools they just crushed there only hope of advancing I would find it funny if after the LHC beat down they decide to disband.

  • Zeth

Thank you very much Totobro and Christian!

  • Viv Lih

I have a theory. It would be hilarious if Luc Xi’s senior was their “Boss”.

    • Schattenbach

Yeah … we don’t know if it’s a knight or a priest, right?

      • Viv Lih

Yeah, they just said “Boss” was training in seclusion, and it seems that none of them are priests. With a probable warrior, a mage, and a summoner, the only ones left are knight, priest, and assassin.

    • Robin

This would be really funny. And the boss would spank them heavily after returning from his closed door training.

      • Viv Lih

Maybe the boss would catch them in the middle of the match and chew them out, then maybe make each of them pay the 10,000 they were trying to make. Or maybe he would come out after the match because their side lost and they had to explain the situation to him. From there Luc Xi and the boss would recognize each other, and the boss would get even more pissed at his teammates for bullying his junior. Anyways, would be really interesting if it turned out this way.

        • Robin

Or Haochen coud need to fight him after finishing this fifth brother with ease. ^^

  • Schattenbach

“Captain, how much assurance do you have on winning?” … “Around 100 percent.”

    • Robin

      Almost ^^

  • ZaX

They chose the wrong team to entice. Thanks for the chapter and Happy Chinese New Year!

  • Schattenbach

The extremely valuable Light Elemental Fairy that’s incredibly valuable for priests, knights, and light-system mages is worth at least 50,000 contribution points.

So … when taking that into account, shouldn’t 50,000 contribution points be enough to obtain one or maybe even two decent spiritual stoves (if they’re up for sale, that is, and aren’t limited to being distributed as reward for reaching commander-, king-, or emperor grade or other great accomplishments)?

If they’re actually planning to obtain one or two spiritual stoves within the next twelve months, I wonder who should what kind of spiritual stove …

    • jamaicandj

I thought everyone was gonna go after that special item that gives them 1000 units of spiritual energy. Since it’s a one time thing they can quickly get more powerful that way ;D

      • Schattenbach

Even if each of Haochen’s squadmembers (the other squad lacks enough leftover money to do that so it’s just “buying pills + upgrading equipment + upgrading to general grade” for them, I guess) buys that (10,000 each), there are still around 90,000 points left to spend on something else (like equipment and stuff). So the consideration of getting a decent spiritual stove early on to have more time to make it’s strength into theirs (and so that it gets the chance to evolve with the pace they themselves grow up) looks like a reasonable approach.

        • jamaicandj

Well haochen and cai’er doesn’t need it….. I don’t think their summoner really needs a spirtual stove either in my eyes so it’d be wang, han yu, sima and lan xin…. Which do you think needs it the most? Personally if lan xin can get even more powerfull with his defensive abilities i’d give him a fire spiritual stove or something make big bro has drugs more powerful!

          • Schattenbach

That or one or two warrior-type spiritual stoves for the two frontline warriors that either supplement their offence or boost their survival.

          • Schattenbach

The third option would be something akin to an utility-type spiritual stove like something with potent scouting capabilities that further increase their means of staying ahead of their enemies. Although in that case, Cai’Er might be the most suitable person to obtain it, although Han Yu (thereby forming their team’s utility belt together with both Lin Xin and Hoayue).

          • Schattenbach

*although Han Yu would also be a good candidate for that.

          • Luke Confidential

On the subject of Han Yu, I want to see this squad pick up one more hanger-on somehow, such that there can be two microsquads for more mission diversity. One led by LHC and one led by Han Yu.

          • jamaicandj

See now im even more excited for the next chapter can’t come here soon enough can’t wait to see what they choose to buy as well as how they intend to train for the next few months since they are not going on missions.

    • Robin

I doubt that spiritual stoves are just for sale. It was also said at the time Haochen acquired the Fairy that they are priceless. They are too rare so that they surely can’t be bought at the sales couter like that.

      • Schattenbach

Light Elemental Fairies most certainly are nearly priceless because, well, light-elemental mages, knights and priests all gain immensly by obtaining them.

We don’t know that much about other stoves, though, and if high-quality items are up for sale (or being auctioned) then why no spiritual stoves? They most certainly are rare and valuable but if, no matter how much contribution points someone gains, he still couldn’t possibly use it up for something like that, where’s the supposed motivation factor behind it?

It’s not like, for example, 50,000 contribution points (the absolute minimun price tag the highly sought after Light Elemental Stove would go for) is a small amount, either, as to earn that much, at least two 20K missions of slaying ten demons of the seventh step would be necessary (well, that or killing several hundred demons of the fifth step)

        • Robin

I agree, stoves of lower quality would probably be sold on occasion. Or auctioned, but aside from trade with demons the only ones who could find and bring back spiritual stoves are other DHSs and they will think twice before selling them.

          • Luke Confidential

Unless they have nobody who has the stove slots and/or capacity for a given stove of course.

Though I don’t see that happening for Light Elemental Stoves, considering there are two out of six entire vocations that are Light Based, and there is potential for an occasional Light-based Warrior or Mage.

          • Schattenbach

It also seems possible to fuse with multiple stoves of the same type … that light elemental fairy actually expected that Haochen would eventually end up fusing with even more light elemental spirit stoves, didn’t she (which is why she wanted the top spot that was already occupied by Haoyue’s blood contract, thereby being almost destroyed by Haoyue’s wrathful response in the process)

          • Luke Confidential

One More. The limit is 3 spiritual stoves [and I imagine most Spiritual Stoves are going to be aligned to an element, generalist Spiritual Stoves seem likely to be rare.]

          • Robin

It is at least not that easy to find the right stoves to fuse with. I remember Xingyu telling Haochen that he should not carelessly fuse with any stove since there is a limit and not all stoves are compatible. A fusion with the wrong stove could hem the future possibilities.

          • Luke Confidential

I must have accidentally been conflating this with the 3 evolutions of the Saint Spiritual Stove.

Even so it makes sense that past the first, it gets more and more complicated to find additional suitable stoves.

          • Robin

Yeah, it surely will. Haochen’s first stove was carefully picked by his father because it is highly compatible and brings great support even though it is not that highly ranked.

          • Luke Confidential

Methinks another part of it is because Haochen chose the primary role of a Guardian Knight [though he trains both paths.]

          • Robin

He made a really good choice. Especially for a guardian knight the stove is priceless.

          • Schattenbach

He also picked it because – from his experience – it has helpful hidden functions like helping people to break though bottlenecks (like that of the fifth step … and possibly that of the sixth step) easier.

          • Schattenbach

No, that isn’t the case as seen here:

            [

Long Xing Yu’s tone was really severe, each of his words came from the sum of his own experience.

“Then, Father, how many spiritual stove can someone fuse with?” Long Hao Chen asked.

Long Xing Yu shook his head: “I don’t know. In theory, there is no
restriction of quantity, but spiritual stoves easily conflict among
themselves. If that happens, you will risk death in regard to the
fusion. The record until now was five spiritual stoves being fused. I
personally fused with three, but it isn’t necessarily better to fuse
with more of them. And you have to continuously make great efforts if
you want your spiritual stove to evolve. After a spiritual stove evolves
a few times, its power will surpass the power of several spiritual
stoves put together that have not evolved. Alright, I explained you the
most important basics. Hao Chen, don’t forget what your mother told you:
whatever the circumstances are, you have to give priority to your own
            security.”]

  • Majk

Nice. Now they can get points despite taking such a long break from missions.

  • Evilage

Oh you released 2 chapters at the same day this time… i didny even notice, my bad
if i were haochen i would accept the mission and make them pay it :3
Make them suffer for trying to swindle His team

    • Luke Confidential

By my estimations, the two ‘new demon hunt squads’ should have enough points to completely clean out the 8th General Grade Squad. [The 21st GG might have enough alone.]

      • Evilage

8th general grade squad will probably be bankrupt after this..
why try swindling? Why don’t they borrow from someone like haochens squad did? Is it me or humans are dumb on that world?

        • Luke Confidential

I have no idea why they aren’t smart enough to take out a loan from somebody. Heck LHC’s squad would have been happy to make such a loan, with proper compensation of course.

My guess is they thought of the trick because they had been tricked. Without that brand in their memory they might have figured out the loan option.

          • Evilage

            Exactly
even haochens squad will be happy to go on a commander level quest.
with the backing of exprienced people
seriously why are they that dumb?
maybe they just want to ruin another squad like how theirs was ruined?

          • Robin

But they would never even imagine that such a new DHS is so rich. And you can only ask for something you know is there.

          • Evilage

I really dont care about this part
after all haochen is almost at the 6th step so he is almost garenteed to win
where my curiosity lies is what haochen and the others will do with the points maybe they have enough to upgrade to a commander level or maybe they will just use the points to get new equipment and skills

          • Luke Confidential

Can’t upgrade to Commander until all members Break Through to the 6th Step.

Which highlights the stupidity of this squad being in such a rush to accumulate the funds for it when one of their members is stuck at a bottleneck and who knows how long he’ll take.

EDIT: even if they COULD make the upgrade, I doubt the 21st would want to until after they get a feel for General Grade missions. I surmise most GG missions will be fairly easy for them, but easy is good for a while after that life and death struggle.

EDIT 2: that being said, this is a squad of geniuses that doesn’t seem to be slowed much by bottlenecks. Even Ying-Er took less than a month to break through the 5th rank after accumulating sufficient Internal Spiritual Energy.

          • Robin

And they won’t because they lack experience and strength.

          • Luke Confidential

Relative to their rank they certainly are not lacking in Strength.

In fact I imagine this squad could complete the average Commander grade mission without any permanent losses.

Though every once in a while a doozy slips in 😛

          • Evilage

            i agree
they just finished a king level mission(even if it was barely they still did it)
so i think they can complete commander level missions.
when was it mentioned that everyone must be at 6th step to be a commander level squad? Maybe i missed that

          • Luke Confidential

QUOTE: The girl nodded and continued, “The new batch of Demon Hunt Squads should have already started completing mission. Maybe we will still have a chance. As long as we scrape enough contribution points, and if you try a little harder to break through to the sixth step, we will immediately be able to climb to the commander grade when boss gets back.”

            Oh thanks for the quote
i didnt read it that deeply
immediately able to climb? So as long as they all are at 6th step no matter the points they can climb?
maybe its the same way with general grade levels as long as all members are 5th step they can climb to general grade?

          • Luke Confidential

I believe that is exactly the case. Just like the 5th step is the gateway to the General Grade, the 6th step is the gateway to the Commander Grade.

Without the cultivation the team is not allowed to purchase the rank-up.

          • Robin

Which is legit since the missions on the next grade are much more demanding. Even if Haochen breaks through to the sixth step it will take a while for the others to follow his lead. Enough time to gain a lot more experience.

          • ShelfCloud

Though I don’t think it will take them that long. My guess is that they will all buy this pill which gives them 1000 points of internal energy. At the fifth step that will save them A LOT of time.

          • Evilage

Buy pills? Are you kidding me?
why would they buy pills when drug bro is there?

          • ShelfCloud

Lin Xin can produce a lot of pills. But if I remember correctly this one special pill is very complicated. It needs the parts from a high ranked magical beast and furthermore Lin Xin mentioned that he never saw the full recipe. So if they want that pill they do not have much of a choice and have to buy it.

          • Jonathan Hurd

To also be fair there is not much gain for Lin Xin learning to make multiple of this pill since its a once in a life time thing. The one thing I want to know though is if they can feed one of those babies to Hao Yue and maybe the treasure pig. That would make me happy…

          • Robin

I am not so sure about that. They only succeeded because they partnered up. And even if they could do it strengthwise, they lack experience. It would be a lot wiser to gain more and improve their equipment and their training before reaching for the next grade.

          • Luke Confidential

It’s moot for now anyway, they lack the cultivation to be allowed to rank up.

          • Robin

Yes, as I said, they are not strong enough yet.

          • Luke Confidential

Technically the 1k minimum they’re asking for isn’t a truely ruinous amount. It’s the greedy squads that would risk it all that would ruin themselves.

Any squad that couldn’t spare 1k and still equip and select missions shouldn’t be making the bet.

        • Schattenbach

Frustration, greed, the impression that they can get away with it, ecetera …

        • Robin

They probably are not that close to other squads as Haochen is. He has a special standing among the new squads and can more easily bridge the gap. I think in general they are simply too competitive to easily lent each other so many contribution points.

          • Schattenbach

The question is why they’re so competive to begin with, though … sure, those other DHS are likely also aiming for the same high-ranking office jobs after quitting their DHS career they are, but still …

My comments seem to be getting deleted idk why 😟

    • Luke Confidential

Maybe they’re a Drag on the rest of the discussion?

      • Dragon

        Lol I don’t think so

    • Robin

Did you post a spoiler in the past? If so, you are probably on a ban list.

      • Dragon

No my last comment was on this chapter and how I thought that the group that were trying to mess with LHC were poor fools

        • Schattenbach

“Poor poor fools they just crushed there only hope of advancing I
would find it funny if after the LHC beat down they decide to disband.” that comment? Still exists … maybe you’ve to load more comments to find it.

        • Robin

I can’t beieve they got deleted then. Maybe you just lost sight of them among all the posts?

          • Dragon
