Shen Yin Wang Zuo, Chapter 253

Shen Yin Wang Zuo, Chapter 253: Lin Xin’s secret

Long Haochen put a Great Recovery Pill in his own mouth, and lowered his head after chewing it slightly, pulling the veil covering Cai’er’s face and letting the pill’s liquid flow into Cai’er’s mouth.

Cai’er’s lips truly felt soft, but at this moment, how could Long Haochen have the leisure to realize that?

Kissed by Long Haochen’s lips and feeling his familiar breath, Cai’er’s body trembled slightly.

Some reaction! Long Haochen loosened his breath, very carefully using his spiritual energy to let the liquid pill spread into Cai’er’s body.

Tightly hugging her, Long Haochen let out glistening teardrops from his eyes, and his body couldn’t resist from shivering.

“Cai’er, which ones of your senses have you lost this time?”

Perhaps was this because of the Great Spiritual Recovery Pill, but Cai’er seemed to feel Long Haochen’s kind intentions this time, and her finger slightly moved.

Quickly, a great change appeared on Long Haochen’s face.

“Sense of smell, sense of vision, sense of hearing, and, sense of taste?”

Out of the six senses1, she actually lost four of them?

Cai’er formerly told Long Haochen a simple explanation on the functioning of the Spiritual Stove of Samsara. The more of its formidable offensive power she would want to bring out, the greater the price. The fact she lost four senses already meant that she used the Spiritual Stove of Samsara close to its peak power.

If… If the enemy was just a little stronger, and if she had activated the last two paths of the Spiritual Stove of Samsara, then she could very possibly never have recovered from it.

One month would be needed to recover from the loss of one sense, unless she had a spiritual stove that would prevent her from losing one of her six senses at any time. Having launched her spiritual stove third activation, she needed two more months to recover her second sense, and these numbers overlayed.

For the loss of three senses, four more months would be needed. It meant that just to recover her hearing, her sight and her taste, she’d need seven months! And if she kept using the Spiritual Stove of Samsara during this period of time, she’d need eight2 more months just to recover the last sense.

If she used the Spiritual Stove of Samsara’s fifth activation, which is also the last one, then all of her six senses would forever be lost, leaving her as a zombie in one breath. Of course, if she came to use that move, the killing power coming out from it would be just like what the Scion of Samsara relied on to heavily wound the Demon God Emperor of that time.

And furthermore, over the next seven months, Cai’er senses wouldn’t be coming back one after another, but she would have to wait seven months first before recovering it all at once. The formidable destructive power came with the incomparably terrifying backlash of the Spiritual Stove of Samsara.

In the midst of his sharp pain, Cai’er seemed to be unaware of how she should try to console him, when suddenly, he lifted up his head to look afar.

On the opposite mountain, a hoard of Grand Fiends were coming out from the other side of the mountain, mounted on Nightmare Devil Horses and headed in their direction.

From the looks of it, they were a total of roughly thirty riders, though their strength was at the moment unknown.

Long Haochen gently put Cai’er on the side, before slowly standing up, looking at Li Xin and Han Daosi, “The two of you, guard the cave. Leave everything else to me.”

Seeing Long Haochen’s expression, Li Xin couldn’t help but feel blank. Within the two Demon Hunt Squads, she was the one that knew Long Haochen for the longest time, but aside from his kindhearted side, she had never seen any other expression of such intensity.

The current Long Haochen had very red eyes, and from his body came a biting cold killing intent, with unstable light essence being released from it. These sharp eyes seemed to be currently filled with blood-thirst and nothing else.

The serious wound Cai’er received from using the Spiritual Stove of Samsara caused Long Haochen to completely explode. He needed to vent his anger, to use the enemy’s blood to wash this wrath exploding from his heart.

Li Xin and Han Daosi didn’t say anything, immediately returning to the cave’s entrance to guard it, and Long Haochen took of the Holy Spirit Armor on his body.

At this very moment, Long Haochen had a sudden cool feeling coming out from the Pendant of Eternal Melody on his chest, as if calming down the pain and the wrath coming out of him. At this very moment, Long Haochen found out with astonishment that it was as if the surroundings were filled with some bizarre energy. This energy seemed to spread into the Eternal Melody, before disappearing noiselessly.

What is it? With his senses being sharper than ordinary people, Long Haochen followed the direction of this energy, finding out to his astonishment that this energy originated from the deceased Grand Fiends as well as their mounts.

Soul energy, this is soul energy!

Long Haochen’s brain came to this judgment almost immediately. The Pendant of Eternal Melody was replenishing the Tower of Eternal Rest using the soul of the deceased.

This knowledge seemed to flow out naturally from Long Haochen’s brain. When he would enter in the Tower of Eternity again, his future training would need a massive amount of soul energy to be carried out. Although the Tower of Eternal was already filled with massive energy, if he only kept consuming it, it would sooner or later be completely exhausted. And as the owner of the Pendant of Eternal Melody, which in itself is the entrance to the Tower of Eternity, he was the one to collect this soul energy. As such, every corpse that died recently, regardless of the race to which it belongs, would have its soul taken by the Pendant of Eternal Melody.

As the Scion of Light, Long Haochen felt unwell from having to bear this sort of feeling. But he had no other choice, because the Eternal Melody was already such a complete part of him that he was unable to get rid of. Furthermore, this was something he couldn’t rashly reveal to others. Only to his father or his teacher could he possibly reveal this secret.

After thinking of this solution, Long Haochen couldn’t help but furrow his brows. At that time, he wouldn’t give it any further thoughts, and rapidly removing the outer part of his armor, Long Haochen tore a part of his martial attire, hooking Cai’er’s back to his own, before putting on his Holy Spirit Armor that could change shape according to its owner. That was to say, Cai’er was now completely linked with his own body.

Long Haochen knew that the current Cai’er wasn’t capable of hearing, so he pulled Cai’er’s arms around his neck, before using a piece of cloth to secure her tightly. Afterwards, he wrote the following words on her palm, “Starting from now on, until you recover thoroughly, I will never let you leave my side and will carry you along with me in battle. I won’t abandon you neither will I separate from you.”

Cai’er’s forehead was leaned against Long Haochen’s neck, as two clear drops of tears slowly fell down.

Today was the first time she used the Spiritual Stove of Samsara to such an extent. After unleashing it for the third time, killing the Fiend Lord, it was as if she returned to the terrifying cavern where she was put during the most terrible period of her life.

Almost being broken by helplessness and loneliness, further adding the weak state of her body, Cai’er seemed to be sensing that death had come for her. The only thing that caused her to keep hope was her wish that Long Haochen would make it back alive.

He came back, he made it back in the end. In this desolate place, Cai’er felt helpless. There was no voice, no taste, no sight, no smell, and in the midst of the pain, he came back.

When this familiar smell appeared in Cai’er’s perception, she immediately trembled upon realization. The hope she had deep inside became an inferno, about to burst out from her.

When Long Haochen kissed her lips, giving her the Great Recovery Spiritual Pill, the feeling she received from the warmth this pill together with Long Haochen’s familiar breath brought her, pulled her back from her memories of those days she was forced into cultivating the Spiritual Stove of Samsara.

And at this very moment, right after she felt those words Long Haochen had written on her palm, those feelings finally disappeared from Cai’er’s heart, replaced by an overwhelming feeling of happiness.

I’m such a fool. As long as I have him, even if the whole world abandons me, I am still not alone anymore.

There is a single reason that could lead a woman to be willing to selflessly pay any price for a man, and that reason is love.

Feeling Cai’er pressed against his back, her legs surrounding his waist, Long Haochen felt his pain lighten from the soft feeling he had. However, when he lifted up his head, looking at the Fiend Cavalry quickly approaching, this feeling of need to vent his anger appeared once again in his heart.

It’s those bastards, it’s them. It’s those demons who caused my Cai’er to need seven more months before recovering her normal state.

In the midst of a buzzing sound, Blue Rain, Hibiscus of Light appeared in Long Haochen’s hand, and with a flash of light, the Holy Spirit Sword appeared in his left hand. His body flashed, landing on Haoyue’s back, and the Light Elemental Fairy Yating stayed loyal to the end, still releasing a Spiritual Gathering Halo to help him recover his spiritual energy.

Able to recover twenty units of his spiritual energy per second, Long Haochen had already recovered close to half of his spiritual energy over this little period of time.

The enemies were drawing closer and closer, and inside of the cave, Li Xin opened her eyes wide, glowering at Lin Xin.

“Are you nothing more but crap? Don’t tell me you cannot even put a single Fireball Technique to use? Do you know how much of his life force Yi Jun exhausted to confine that Fiend Commander. If not for Haochen’s prompt arrival, we would all be dead here today. Are you really a mage of the fifth step? You are clearly not fit to be called a Demon Hunter.”

It wasn’t surprising that Li Xin was so furious. She clearly saw the previous situation inside of the cavern, and was on her way to return as fast as possible. But at the last instant, Lin Xin only released a Defying Ring of Fire, thoroughly angering that resolute and upright Retribution Knight.

As everyone else was staking everything and going all out, but Lin Xin was the only one that didn’t launch any attack at all. Considering his level of cultivation, if he had launched a powerful spell of fire magic at that time, maybe he would have wounded that Fiend Commander seriously.

Lin Xin’s face was somewhat blank, listening to Li Xin’s indignant speech without saying a word.

“Why don’t you speak back!? Are you a man or not? With such powerful controlling power, and as a mage of the fifth step, why can’t you unleash a single offensive spell? I’m really regretting that I didn’t stop Haochen at that time.”

“Enough, Li Xin.” Han Yu stood before him with difficulty, and Wang Yuanyuan, Sima Xian as well as Chen Ying’er gathered at his side.

“Li Xin, you should know that Lin Xin is an alchemist. Why do you think we managed to hold out for so much longer than Dian Yan, to resist for such a long time? It was because we took the pills Lin Xin offered us. Lin Xin cannot attack, but if not for him, we wouldn’t have lasted long enough for Haochen to get back. Lin Xin is an important part of our 21st general grade Demon Hunt Squad. His investment is clear to all of us, and he is a part our team cannot part with. Everyone has his own weaknesses, so why shouldn’t it be the same for him?”

Li Xin furiously replied, “Yes, everyone has weaknesses, but attacking is a mage’s duty. As a extremely destructive fire element mage, how can he be unable to launch a single fireball, why is that? I am just hoping for him to give me a clear explanation for that. If one day, Haochen cannot withstand the enemy’s attacks and finally has to rely on his attacks to dispose of the enemy, what will happen? Why does he have to be so strong if he isn’t able to increase your strength to such an extent? I don’t wish for my little brother to give up all hope upon seeing him.”

“Alright, I will tell you.” Lin Xin yelled back in response.

Taking a rapid step forward, he arrived at Han Yu’s side. His body was trembling violently, and his original pale face became totally flushed.

“I am a mage that cannot attack, one that cannot do it at all. You are all right, my situation is completely different from Sima’s. He is unable to learn healing magic, but it’s not as if I was unable to learn. As long as I was willing, I could learn to use fire element magic without bounds, but I didn’t learn it. I couldn’t bring myself to learn it.”

Coming to a pause, Lin Xin was already soaked in tears.

“At those time, my mother was an even greater genius of the Mage Temple than me. At the time she was thirty, she already broke through from the sixth step to the seventh step, acclaimed as the greatest genius of her generation. My father was an expert at using offensive magic, and he spent his whole life studying the most powerful fire spell, but one day, he made a mistake. His mistake caused his own body to burn with in a massive fire, and at that time, my mother happened to bring me to see him. And to protect me, mother used her own body to block that terrifying exploding force, meeting with a violent death along with my father. Although I was only five years-old that year, I will never be able to forget that terrible explosion of fire. If not for offensive magic, how would I have lost my mother? If not for offensive magic, I would still have a blessed family.”

“I cannot learn offensive magic, and will never step across it in my life. I don’t wish to see my companions or relatives die by my own hands, because of my magic. From that day onwards, no mater how my grandfather tried to force me, I never agreed to learn any offensive magic, up until now. But I’m not crap, I am using everything I can to help my team. If one day, this situation really arises, then I will definitely be the first of everyone to die, and I will use my corpse to prove everything I just said!”

Done with his words, Lin Xin was silently crying, and Han Yu let out a sigh, lightly patting his shoulder, telling Li Xin, “I can comprehend your state of mind, but did you really have to let his scars come out of his heart? If not for some extraordinary reason of this kind, why would he be unable to learn offensive spells? It wasn’t because we didn’t care about these matters that we have never asked him until now, but because we chose to trust our companions. Lin Xin will forever remain a part of our Demon Hunt Squad.”

  1. reminder: there are six senses in Chinese fantasy, try to get used to it
  2. 2^0= 1 month, 2^1 = 2 months, 2^2 = 4 months, 2^3 = 8 months, so I think it should follow this pattern. In other words, let n be the number of senses lost, then, 2^n is the number of months required to recover the nth sense.
  • Aageeth1

Thanks for the chapter… been waiting 4 this…

  • Evilage

    Thanks for the chapter
now i gotta feeling that li xin and lin xin will end up together… anyone who shares the same thought??

    • Robin

Well, I seriously doubt that. In my eyes they are soooo not compatible with each other…

      • Evilage

Well i read many stories where the two characters get of in a bad start and then later fall in love, maybe i’m just reading too much into it due to the similarities in their names

        • Robin

Yes, they would be the cliche couple in that regard, but I don’t think their personalities match well. It is not impossible but I can’t wrap my mind around it at this point.
Then I would rather ship Sima Xian and Yuanyuan. ^.^

          • Evilage

That ship also came into mind
they both are berserkers and have a lot in common
            i hope this ship sails
han yu will be like “no one for me?, never mind i got master XD” and then gets killed by cai’er

          • Robin

What do you think about Li Xin and Han Yu?
The reckless girl and the formerly arrogant and now serious and dependable knight?

          • Daene Kendrick

That would work, especially after he just put her in her place with that comment at the end.

          • Robin

Right? So far we didn’t see both of them together often but this scene was really nice. I think this would be a better fit than Li Xin and Lin Xin.

          • Daene Kendrick

She would have to find someone that can hold his own against her, both from a station standpoint and physical standpoint. He actually comes from a better lineage then her and he is both more skilled and stronger then her. Not to mention the more he hangs around LHC the more he will change into an acceptable match.

          • Robin

And as closely as he follows Haochen some of Haochen’S chraracter traits should rub off on him so he virtually becomes closer to her ideal. Even agewise they would make a goos fit.

          • Evilage

I never did think about that couple, han yu and li xin could also make a good couple
they both are knights even thou han yu is slightly better
and they both like hao chen, this could work

          • Daene Kendrick

Well I wouldnt say he is better as a whole I mean he has been personaly taught by his grandfather. Where as Li Xin comes from a smaller city and temple. This really does limit her growth potential. Just imagine if LHC didnt have his father to train him at first would he really have progressed like he has.
If more parents take after Cai’er and LHC family in regards to their approach to training the alliance as a whole would probably be a lot stronger. And Han Yu wouldnt have been as arrogant as he was.

          • Robin

I agree, although I am not sure if Cai’er is a good example for a good training/educational strategy. The temples do seem to have a certain structure of training their new generation, but it seems to have many loopholes when it depends on the youth himself how much he trains and how ambitious he is. If they manage to close those loopholes maybe the Alliance will get a serious power up.

          • Daene Kendrick

I didnt mean exactly transfer the training method. Her training was specific to the Samsara Stove. But I mean using harsher methods, not gifting great equipment, etc. Work the arrogance out of them.

Like LHC’s training there was no time for sissy footing, he was and is stronger then alot of those whom are arrogant yet due to the severity of his training and his humble raising he never learned of arrogance. The spoiling of the children are what grew their arrogance, like Li Xin couldnt believe when she first met LHC nor can the others.

          • Robin

Military drill is probably not hte most successfull attempt for this kind of training. Individuality was kept high during the competition and the Temple training we have learned about so far. Even within the vocations there seem to exist too large a variety of special powers and abilities, so that the training method and pace should be in need of individual adjustment. But yeah, some more discipline wouldn’t have hurt Han Yu. Wang Yangzhao on the other side seems to have received such an education.

          • Daene Kendrick

Not so much in military drill, I ment that once you have recognized someone as having the potential to enter the DHS Competition there training should be taken over by someone who will not baby them. Remember that one knight whose father made the bet with LHC master. Had his father approached training his son like LHC’s did then he may have been worthy of the confidence he had. Just like Han Yu’s grandfather realized after the fact and didnt dote on his grandson anymore or give him great equipment. In the future these should be things all the temples come to understand. Priest temple should bring back the discipline priest as well after seeing the abilities of xima.

          • Robin

You are completely right. The problem is to have as many good teachers as talented individuals. As the system was explained, you have to detect the talent rather early to still be able to mold it. Without him taking over the training of his son, even Haochen’S father would not have noticed his special physiwue early. And if he had had his awakeing at the temple some years later like it usual goes, he would still not have had the same perfect development. And as you can see from the average age of his companions, the training seems to get serious rather late, considering the age limit to enter a DHS.
By the way, I liked the comment from one of the elders about Cai’er and Haochen not having a true childhood with their cultivation level at such a young age. It is a double edged sword.

          • Daene Kendrick

Well before he realized his son had the ability of the scion of light it seems more then guaranteed that all family members of powerful members of each temple their children and grandchildren have followed suit. the 2 divine knights children are both extrodinary. Han Yu and his grandfather. Cai’ers family. Lin Xin family, etc etc.

          • Robin

Yes, he saw his potential. And he was at least inclined to draw the best potential out of him. I think even if he hadn’t been able to reach this heights he would have pushed Haochen as far as he could. Han Yu is owerful, but more the little avove average type. His perspectives were not bad but skyroketed after becoming Haochen’s retainer. But yes, the potential seems to be heraditary. Yang Wenzhao is another example. His grandfather is also a divine throne and his grandson is truly powerful and has the potential to rise higher. (Why do I see a scene coming, when even Han Yu overtakes him due to the benefits of his contract with Haochen? I think from the inborn potential Wengzhao is more powerful than Han Yu.)

I doubt this arrogant brat of a knight we met at the Beast Mountin would even be able to rise higher with strict and excellent training. 😉

          • Daene Kendrick

I loved the comment from the father at the tournamnet, about how he shouldnt have spoiled him growning up. Also about how he stated that his teacher had been wrong.

          • Robin

Which father do you mean? I am not sure I exactly recall that scene.

          • Daene Kendrick

The father whos made the bet with Asura Sensei.

          • Robin

Ah, yes, I remember. Well, if he hadn’t spoiled his son rotten, he would maybe have gotten a better result. With a big, big maybe.

          • Daene Kendrick

As of right now we have LHC and C we have Pig Girl and the Leader of team 2, Possibly budding romance between shield girl and baldie, I see Lin Xin possibly with a female mage maybe Li Xin friend from the beginning. Fire and Water mages. But definetly Han Yu and Li Xin would work.

          • Luke Confidential

I prefer to ship Pig Girl with Austin Griffin.

          • Daene Kendrick

lol na the pig is afraid of austin griffin lol

          • Luke Confidential

            But the girl… 😉 😉

          • Daene Kendrick

She to was afraid of him when she saw him merge with LHC. Summoner Girl does like the man she is engaged to she just wants to find herself on equal footing with him not beholden to him reference her comment about the emperor eye or whatever it was called how could she bring that to the table when he brought his unicorn etc etc.

          • Luke Confidential

To each their own. I have my ship you have yours.

          • Daene Kendrick

            HAHAHA true that.

          • Daene Kendrick

I am awaiting the reunion of LHC and his parents and him introducing him to wifey Cai’er lol

          • Robin

This will be amazingly fun! And there is still the little theoriy about his mother unsolved…

          • Daene Kendrick

I never read the thread on the possibilites of the mothers situation

          • Robin

We theorized about the identity of his mother and the reason she left his father and hid for so many years. There were some ideass about her being a half demon, something like the princess of the Yue Ye merchants. It would explain that Haochen is so beautiful and has such a special power. What if it is a result of a mixed lineage? Her identity could have caused her to leave Xinyu’s side if she feared to embarass him within the Alliance. Nothing is proved, but the idea is interesting.

          • Daene Kendrick

Wait I have an idea on that train of thought. Remeber the Xinyu was honor bound to go and duel one of the demon gods. The report that Han Yu’s grandad reported on with the other divine knight. Perhaps that is LHC mother family. I think its the 4th ranked demon god i do believe. Maybe the duel was set for 10 or more years down the road to allow for them to enjoy a bit of time together, and the reason she left was that if she wasnt by his side he wouldnt be honor bound to go and fight .

          • Robin

It is Anan, the seventh DG. And yeah, this point was raised as well. The opinions differed on this point. It was also said that the reason why he had to fight him was connected to Xinyu’s status as a 9th step. It is possible and I side with this as well, that if the theory about his mom is not completely wrong, it is related to her. Your idea is definitely a good one. But on the other hand, it could also be that the Alliance can’t lose face when a powerhorse doesn’t accept a direct challenge. The demons could think he is afraid and fear the 9th steps less. This could also be a responsibility, especially of the divine thrones.
What do you think about the general theory about his mom?

          • Daene Kendrick

I like the general theory behind it. It would definetly help explain why his potential is so much higher then even his fathers. Only time will tell if we are correct though.

          • Robin

True, I am quite curious about it. She didn’t seem to have any powers of her own. And I can’t imagine a hero such as Xingyu to marry a woman with no status and produce such an amzing heir. Especially since he seems really fixed on getting stronger and strengthening the Alliance. Xingyu also seemed to know or at least expect his son to be special. He should have had a basis for it. Do you know Douluo Dalu from the same author? There we have a similar setting.

          • Daene Kendrick

We dont know that she has no powers. She may have kept them hidden because she and LHC were in hiding

          • Robin

She might, but didn’t Xingyu easily stun her with his powers when Haochen attacked him? I said it seems like she has none. That can be the case or can’t. But her condition was weak so when she has them, they shouldn’t be too strong or her body probably wouldn’t hold out.

          • Daene Kendrick

I think her health is to blame, Demons may have a special energy they need to cultivate. She probably weakened over time and that fluid was helping her maintain minimum strength

          • Robin

It seems like it. Maybe the atmosphere was also a bad influence on her. Or giving birth to Haochen exhausted her physically. Like she sacrificed her power to give birth to him.

          • Luke Confidential

When Cai-Er gets her sense of hearing back you’d better switch your phrasing from ‘like’ to admire, or there may be a bloodbath.

          • Robin

Hahaha, is probably better for the health.

  • agila0212

Thanks a lot for the new chapter 🙂

  • Rreelentless

    Thanks for the chapter!
i’m calling it it’s either some unique body thing or far more likely to be a mental block like he injured someone and now can’t do it

  • Eldoss

Hmm, it feels that chapter cut off abruptly, some stuff missing?,

  • Anto Wibowo

    the chapter looked incomplete.
still, thank you for the chapter though.

  • kirindas

    Thanks for the new chapter!

  • Alex Drake

Oh man we’re gonna have a BLOODBATH rampage next chapter I can just feel it!~

  • bubuls

Thanks for the chapter but you forgot 1/3 of it I think.

  • anon

Thanks for the chapter. Also you missed part of the raw. around 500 words i think

  • AnarchyDev

Great chapter. Development at 2 sides… The next few chapters will be interesting. Thanks for the chapter.

  • Majk

Time for a good’ol fashion bloodbath YEAH!!!

    • Jonathan Hurd

Hao Chen pissed….. Hao chen smash!

  • Majk

She could lay of Lin Xin after all expect from LHC he is the one that contributes the most to the team (maybe even more than LHC). His pills are one of the best things that they could have, not only do they help in battle but they also help other members in cultivacion plus he can sell them to make extra money for the team not to mention that in a team so focused on attack his defensive spells are a big help (and as said before by Gao Yingjie his casting skills are excellent) .

Seriously, I would be more mad at Yi Jun for doing something stupid despite knowing that Lin cant use any offensive spells (and even if he could cast a fire ball it wouldnt have done jack in that situation). It would have been sortert to really on Lins spells to stop the enemy even for a second while the guy that can actually use attack spells would use his life force to attack a already weakened enemy.

    • Daene Kendrick

True I agree with the sentiment he and the 21st all have defended his complete inability to use attack magic, so in that situation they should have relied on him to stall the fiend and have the spatial mage attack. Instead the spatial mage stalled the fiend.

      • Robin

Classic case of bad interaction of the squads during a real fight. Well, they never truly had to cooperate without Haochen commanding them. Luc Xi clearly lacks as commander and the members tactical understanding and experience. At some point they simply went all out without keeping the strong and weak points of everyone into account. Or at least the 4th squad did. The 21st really gave a better impression.

        • Jonathan Hurd

I think the biggest problem is that I think the 4th DHS squad has always just assumed Lin Xin could use offensive magic and that he just doesn’t. That is why we got that situation from before. Also Li Xin’s yelling and the order to attack were pretty heat of the moment things so they aren’t really in the most rational state of mind right now. Still randomly kicking people while they are down is not in anyway helping the situation. I can understand a certain level of frustration but without Lin Xin they would never have even gotten to that point to begin with. Han Yu would of ended up like the 4th’s shield warrior and then they would all be dead even with Cai’er taking out the 7th step fiend.

          • Robin

I guess she will regret her harsh words as soon as Lin Xin tells his story. And she will feel ashamed. I guess Haochen won’t even say anything to scold her because she will regret it on her own.
And yeah, I guess during the team chosing the 4th squad was a little too preoccupied with all the powerhorses and divine thrones popping up to pay attention to the minor destails such as Lin Xin’s confession of his weakness. But at least Li Xin should have beencompletely aware of his inability.

          • Jonathan Hurd

I think part of what has let all the 21st General Grade DHS accept Lin Xin is that they all carry some flaw. I mean Han Yu lost his chance to participate because of his arrogance, Yin Er can’t summon anything but randomly use the gate, Sima Xian can’t heal, Wang Yuanyuan can’t defend, and even Cai’er can’t bring herself to socialize. The thing bringing all these misfits together and binding them like glue is LHC who is just so much stronger than everyone else and helps each person shine in their particular field. Quite honestly none of them (other than LHC who wouldn’t) are in a position to criticize others for shortcomings because they are all aware of their own. It is much easier for Lin Xin to be accepted in a such a odd ball team than by a team filled with pretty standard members.

For me I do think Li Xin deserves to feel ashamed of her outburst for one and to be told off by LHC. I am completely sure LHC wouldn’t let anyone say its Lin Xin’s fault mainly because LHC more likely blames himself, and he also understands just how huge Lin Xin’s contributions have been. I have to say overall what is done is done and yelling at someone is not going to help. That being said I know that emotions are high right now and watching a team mate stake his life to give you a shot and losing that shot cannot feel good, but again that is no reason to trample on the poor guy. I think Lin Xin more than anyone else realizes how bad it is that he cannot use offensive magic.

          • Robin

Not even a tiny thing to say against your post. Among the blind people the one-eyed is a king. As you said, there is no one who has the right to throw stones. And they all push each other forward while covering their comrades. This is what turned them from team members to friends under Haochen’s influence. No one is isolated or discriminated.

Yep, she should be. And I guess Haochen will have to say something to her if she doesn’t raises the point herself. She clearly knows him best and there is no excuse for her behavior towards a member of another team.
Lin Xin’s tears are an undeniable sign for his deep emotions and pain. He, who is that proud, to cry in front of all of them is really something unexpected and meaningful. Usually, he is rather composed about everythin, aside from his little dramatic moments. 😉

          • Jonathan Hurd

At the very least there might be a slight positive that can come from this. Now that he has shared the reason why he can’t use offense magic it allows everyone to understand him better now. I think it might also help Lin Xin a bit to get that off his chest. The lead up could of been much softer but hopefully they can all grow stronger and closer from this.

          • Robin

It is another mask he lets slide, maybe not willingly, but still, he opened up a bit more. And at least to the part where he is ready to sacrifice himself for the team, Haochen will surely have something to say.

          • Daene Kendrick

I don’t think LHC will have to say anything to Li Xin, bc she will remember what he had told her previously. She will come to see how great a contribution he is to the team. First he increases the defense of those fighting and second he has drugs that increase their abilities.

          • Robin

I thought more about him talking this matter through with Lin Xin. Because Haochen would not want or accept one of his companions to prepare sacrificing his life when push comes to shove.

  • Last lines weren’t released due to a bug during the release. Fixed!

  • Robin

Yes, and now you can enjoy the real secret behind his handicap. 😉

    • Jonathan Hurd

Good job on the theory by the way, :D. Right on about his mom and we guessed Trauma was the block. Would have been cool if he was another special body user but still worth it.

      • Robin

This was probably my lucky draw. 😉
Yes, a special body would have been nice but I like the setting more as it is. If you overstretch a concept it isn’t as cool anymore.

        • Jonathan Hurd

I agree with you there. If the majority of people in LHC’s team all have special bodies it starts becoming a bit weird and less special.

  • Sylali

    thanks 🙂

  • Great Development! I love the relationship b/w Caier and LHC.. It’s one of the best I’ve ever seen or read. Caier’s love for LHC knows no limits and LHC is getting so protective of Caier now that he realized his mistake for his delay. I hope they just get out of that place quickly and take care of Caier. I hate the powers with such backlash, LHC can do nearly same damage it feels like he cheats compared to how much Cai’er suffers. Anyways I don’t think anyone really benefitted from this cave thing except LHC for his eternal melody. Cai’er was handicapped for atleast 7 months. If he isn’t gonna stay by her side this shit happens often and he ends up hurting her the most!

Btw I would like to have the manhua updated! It’s still stuck at the competition, I would like to see the scene at the end of the competition where he gets Caier into his demon hunt squad after causing much fuss!

    • Daene Kendrick

I can not hold it against him for not having them come with him into the cavern for the exploration. 1) he saw how it affected the fiends. 2) Only because of his affinity with the light attribute was he able to master let alone discover his new skill pulsing light. 3) I am a combat veteran and I am telling you from military standpoint his thought that they would have atleast 3 days before reinforcements arrived should have been valid. The failure here I think actually falls on the priest and Han Yu not using their abilities and companion to keep an accurate scout going. The priest may have detected a shadow or whatever it was called that probably reported back like with what happened the first time LHC went into demon territory.

Cai’er may still have had to use the stove if LHC had been there because offensively she may have been the only one who could harm that strong bastard. bc LHC would have been so focused on defense it wouldnt have mattered

      • Jonathan Hurd

I would just like to say that they did spot the enemy troops before the troops spotted them so the scouting seemed to be good. The big problem was Hao Yue’s disappearance. Hao Yue and LHC are connected so if Hao Yue had stayed the original plan could have worked out. With Hao Yue by the combined squads if danger occurred for either side then LHC would be able to immediately teleport back and take command. This would also have meant that not only the two teams wouldn’t have to fight this pack of Fiend demons without him but they might not have had to fight at all. They only put themselves in such a bad position because LHC was still gone and they didn’t want him to be ambushed alone against that troop. Overall the plan was good. Even in the case of unexpected circumstances they originally could of had LHC back. What screwed this up was LHC needing Hao Yue at his side and then LHC not rushing back now that he had lost his easy way back.

As for LHC killing a 7th step guy versus Cai’er killing a 7th step guy the big difference you have to keep in mind is Hao Yue’s presence. When LHC fuses with him he becomes a 6th step guy and is able to kill someone a step above him. Cai’er on the other hand is fighting as a 5th step against a 7th step and still manages to win. All in all without Hao Yue LHC would have no way of coming anywhere close to Cai’er’s offensive strength.

        • Daene Kendrick

What I ment by scouting was the use of their ability to see hidden enemies, like the ones that use camouflage like invisibility. Only Han Yu’s Eye Companion and Luc Xin’s priest abilities could have discovered these scouts, I believe there must have been scouts is the only reason there is this quick and strong of a response to what they have already done.

          • Jonathan Hurd

To be fair I am pretty sure they made a few sweeps after wiping out that first group of fiends and then they concealed themselves with the disguises from the moon clan eventually parking in that cave. The chances of demons randomly sending out a scouting shade in this stretch of land extremely deep into demon territory and then that shade spotting their remote hiding cave seems somewhat unlikely especially adding in the fact that for all intents and purposes they look like a group of Moon Clan nobles resting.

If they knew their previous forces died to an ambush and this second troop was coming to avenge/reinforce wouldn’t they have been much more careful along the way? Cai’er got the total drop upon them though admittedly that could be more a testament to her skills. The other problem I can think of is that the response has just been way to quick. Even if a shade spotted LHC’s team in the cave the sheer speed of getting together a group of Fiend Calvary and sending them to the Cave just seems too fast.

It feels like it might be more likely that the Fiends really really wanted Elux’s tower or at the very least to destroy it. The investment of Fiends so far has been kind of staggering honestly. We are now seeing the fourth group of Fiends (this includes the ones who initially sent a request for back up). As far as I can see currently I think the Fiend clan is working alone. Part of the reason for this I think is so that their tribe can grab the credit. From how that first fiend commander talked to LHC he seemed to be trying to hint their journey was on the orders of the Demon God Emperor and that they are following the direct orders of their Demon God.

          • Daene Kendrick

I also agree with this point. Though I doubt they actually know what was within the cavern as the one party who has come close to the tower has been wiped out. The Fiends are probably trying to obtain whatever may be within the cavern to improve their own standings, and not under orders from the Emperor as it is doubtful anyone would check on those orders. So far they have lost almost 100 Fiends atleast 4 Fiend Commanders and 1 Fiend Lord. As there have been no other demons with their groups I definetly agree they are working alone and may be sending as many troops as they can without being noticed to swiftly and quietly take control of whatever they find.

  • Sarlisark

you’ve said that in chinese fantasy there are six senses. So what are these senses, Also i am a bit confused :”Sense of smell, sense of vision, sense of hearing, and, sense of taste” are the ones she has supposedely lost however,”He came back, he made it back in the end. In this desolate place, Cai’er felt helpless. There was no voice, no taste, no sight, no hearing, and in the midst of the pain, he came back.

When this familiar smell appeared in Cai’er’s perception, she immediately trembled upon realization. The hope she had deep inside became an inferno, about to burst out from her.” seems like she could smell him, or is it meant as perceive somehow.

Also is hearing, taste and voice somehow linked so that she is unable to talk?
btw. thanks Toto for the chapter

    • Luke Confidential

She could smell him because her sense of smell wasn’t taken. You didn’t notice smell not on the list of senses taken?

Taste was previously mentioned to include speech, that was the sense she was deprived of at the time she first met LHC as a child.

EDIT: the 6th sense is, of course, The Sixth Sense. Spiritual Perception.

      • Sarlisark

“Sense of smell, sense of vision, sense of hearing, and, sense of taste”, the first one please, smell is taken.
or did she lose hearing back then since as far as I remember she did not seem to hear what he said

        • Daene Kendrick

The first attack was my eyes, the second take was my ears, the third attack was my tongue. Thus Sight, Hearing, and Voice/Taste. she can smell him and can feel his kiss with her lips. That is why LHC writes on her hand so she can process what he is saying, she didnt need to hear him ask what she gave up to understand that would be his first worry.

          • Luke Confidential

Yeah… I’m wondering why LHC thought Smell was taken too.

[My bad on the statement Sarli, the text does indeed say that.]

          • Sarlisark

welll smell is taken, because she chose that sense. After achieving approval by the stove, she got the ability to choose which sense she would lose instead of having no say in it. And she chose smell, since it would hinder her the least.(that was in some chap, when they returned from exorcist mountain)

          • Daene Kendrick

She had decided that if she were to use it again that would be the sense she gave up. But seeing as the most damaging attacks she could have used were the eyes, ears, and mouth those are what she targeted.

          • Robin

This is how I understood it as well. That she mainly lost her vision, her ability to speak, her ability to hear and the sense of taste.
There was a scene where her loss of the sense of smell was mentioned as her chosen tribute to the stove. Taken this into consideration she would be bare of 5 senses altogether. But I am not so sure if the tribute of one sense is still valid in case of the major loss due to activation. If not, it would explain how she was able to smell him.

          • Jonathan Hurd

The way I understand it is that her sense of sight, hearing, and taste are now permanently locked until 7 months from now. However, the stove still also requires her to voluntarily lock one of the three remaining senses between smell, touch, and Spirit. Admittedly since she can choose the voluntary sense to be blocked, I think she could of changed it over to her sense of spiritual power and is currently using touch and smell. From rereading the chapter a bit it does say that she needs 7 month’s to recover the three senses she used, but she herself states she is currently down four senses so I think that is how it works.

          • Jonathan Hurd

From what has been said about the Spiritual Stove of Samsara she has to live with one sense always sealed and the one she chose was smell last time we checked. I was also wondering about how it says she smelled his scent but also states she lost her sense of smell. I think that might be an error on the original author and he intended to say she felt his familiar spiritual energy or presence.

Also taste and speech are linked together as one thing. If you remember back when LHC first met her she was mute because the Stove of Samsara took her taste. I think they did that because lacking taste wouldn’t really be that big of a hindrance in battle compared to stuff like hearing, sight, spiritual perception, and so on.

          • Daene Kendrick

I think the sealed sense is just a stop gap until she actually uses the spiritual stove. At that point it is replaced by the first sense she sacrifices for the use of the stove.

          • Jonathan Hurd

I’m not so sure personally. In the story it says that if she activates the Stove 5 times then all her senses will be sealed permanently. I think that one sense is always being taken by the Stove of Samsara to kind of offset the massive amount of power it gives her access to. I mean as they said before, when she was fighting the golden birdy demon, manifesting your killing intent into a weapon is something even 9th step assassin’s would struggle with, but something that comes with ease to Cai’er with that particular stove. I think it also shows just how extreme its power is that to even hold onto it and have it at the ready requires a price.

  • lordcattank

thank you very much for the chapter so he’s really going to blame attack magic instead of his father who was the real cause of the accident what a idiot

    • Robin

Well, it is not easy for a child to blame his father after he saw both of his parents die. The father didn’t do anything wrong in general, he simply made a mistake, which can easily occur if you dabble in serious and powerful magic. It was just really bad luck that they just were close by. And that his mother didn’t see another way to defend him than to sacrifice herself.
He must have been in unimaginable pain after losing both of them. And the only way not to blame them was to blame attack magic. I think this is a really natural way to safe himself, beacuse he must have suffered so much that he had to blame someone or something.
I find it rather astonishing that he didn’t cave in under the pressure and force of his grandpa. And that he still managed to get so powerful. He is a ream team player and supports everyone with conviction.

      • Robin

It gives a really bad impression of the grandpa, by the way. Trying to force him to learn attack magic despite his trauma and infringe and belittle him beacuse he walks his own path. It seems that he didn’t even praise him for his efforts and results before the end of the competition. Moreover, he seemed embarrased of having Lin Xin as grandson. I hope Haochen and his squad will get reeeeally famous so that his grandfather regrets to ever have looked down on him.

        • Daene Kendrick

Well his grandfather did finally start to like his grandson at the end of the tournament. He was probably just disappointed in the loss of someone so gifted performing to the best of their ability especially his own grandson when he is near the top of the Mage Temple in position.

          • Robin

Nevertheless, no reason to force him. But yeah, he definitely has a better impression of him now. Lin Xin proved to have courage and honor.

          • Jonathan Hurd

I have to agree it is hard to personally like the grandfather, but the fact is he also probably is struggling under his own grief. I mean it certainly was traumatic for the 5 year old Lin Xin who had to be protected and was so close to the event, but also consider the regret that the grandfather probably holds thinking to himself if he was there he might have been able to save Lin Xin’s mother or at the very least been the one to sacrifice his life instead of her.

On one hand it does seem somewhat cruel to try and force Lin Xin to learn offensive magic after that, but at the same time would it really be okay for him to leave things as is? It is good that Lin Xin has people around him who accept him as he is, but also sometimes you need someone who is willing to try to push you out of your comfort zone. I will say he could probably show a bit more affection, but can you really blame him with how shameless Lin Xin was acting at the start? I mean Lin Xin was using the Demon Hunt Selection as a way of advertising his Alchemy Business and showing off. His grandfather clearly showed his pride when Lin Xin acted in a way that deserved it.

          • Robin

Lin Xin certainly was a freaky character. Extroverted and flashy and willing to play the clown. It looked to me liek a mask to cover his inner world and his more serious nature. He lost this airhead behavior fast after meeting the right companions and being accepted.
And you are right as well, I can’t blame the grandpa entirely on this. But from my own experience such a loss either binds a family together or it splits it apart. And from the look of it, the second is what happened. Such a push, as you mentioned, is really needed and helpful, but only rarely a closely affected family member has the necessary distance to give this push in a constructive way. Most of the time such a try ends in obsessed compulsion and stiffened frontlines.
Without leaving the shadow of his grandpa, Lin Xin would probably never have gotten the chance to learn that there is a way out of his solitude. Because the vibe I got from him before and right after the competition is loneliness.

          • Jonathan Hurd

Yeah I can definitely see the mask thing. It also makes sense that he would be so guarded especially going into the Demon Hunt Selections. If word got out that he can’t actually attack then he might never have a chance of getting into a squad. He needed to sparkle greater than anyone else and overwhelm them with what he can do otherwise he had very little hope of ever being truly accepted. Showing weakness in the competition would make people think to call his bluff.

It is nice to see that all the members of the 21st General Grade DHS have fully accepted him and support him. I honestly think he won over LHC a long time ago through the usefulness of his pills (without those LHC would probably have died in Hao Yue’s world trying to defend Hao Yue). Lin Xin really has played a gigantic role in the team. He has made pills that on multiple occasions saved the groups lives, allowed Yin Er and Sima Xian to break through to the 5th step, and provides defense for the team that they sorely lack.

On the grandfather I have to agree as well that he is really not the right person to help Lin Xin overcome his grief and mental block. I would say the Grandpa is really just too close to the problem. I would just say I think part of the reason the grandpa is so harsh on Lin Xin is partly due to feelings of guilt and a lack of understanding in how to express them. It probably tears him up inside that on that day when Lin Xin was five that not only did he lose two members of his family who were amazing mages, but it even led to scarring his grandson and a third potential star. In a situation like that you probably cannot help asking yourself what if questions like if you had been there could you have saved the daughter…

          • Robin

Yes, he is probably as helpless as Lin Xin was before he found true friends who support him and stay true to their word even after discovering his weakness and true nature.
I loved the scene when Han Yu and the others defend him even in their weak state. This is truly all for one and one for all. 😉

          • Jonathan Hurd

I can’t help feeling this is more of LHC’s positive influence on the team. I mean considering how LHC setup the team with points sharing and togetherness as the biggest factor I think this is just a natural outcome of that system.

          • Robin

Natural with the right companions, yes. And I agree. I like it, it is something they have but what others not necessarily possess, a treasure.

        • Evilage

I kinda get the feeling that lin xin will become a really strong offensivw mage in the future from how the plot is going

          • Daene Kendrick

Im not so sure on that point. His focus on defense allows for the attack strength of the team to be used to its fullest. Remember the shield warrior isnt a defender nor is the priest a healer he is a discipline priest. His help with defense allows less pressure to fall onto LHC at times.

          • Robin

At least I agree so far, that he possesses grand potential for later character development.

          • Daene Kendrick

It may infact lead to mages having a new role to train into. As defense or Attack specialist.

          • Luke Confidential

On this note, I’d like to see Lin Xin come up with some additional support magic to help cover that missing priest role.

Perhaps a ‘flame of life’ spell that accelerates the target’s natural healing, or a ‘rushing flame’ spell that gives afterburners to the target’s motions, accelerating strikes and strides.

          • Robin

This would be great. And absolutely down his alley.
And he will also make even more awesome pills. Remember what he did with the Bloodthirsty Beta. And now he has the material of 2-3 other demons at the seventh step.

        • Schattenbach

Maybe his grandfather really missed Lin Xin’s mother and, with her protecting Lin Xin from the fire, partially blames Lin Xin for her death?

          • Robin

Possible, we don’t know if he is his grandfather on his mother’s or his father’s side. Their death must have been a bitter loss for the mage temple.

    • Daene Kendrick

He isnt an idiot in this thought process. BC his father and mother were obviously very skilled mages, but the fact remains that attack magic is unstable. That is why he doesnt want to practice that school of magic in an attempt to never endanger his own allies if he cant control it, like in that severly stressful situation the fireball they wanted him to use could have seriously hurt everyone still within the cave, coma boy, broke arms, berserker, han yu and shield girl would not have been able to protect themselves from the blast itself.

      • Robin

Especially since he seems to have inherited the extreme powerful magical ability. His control and ability to wield magic is amazing. It is no wonder that he doesn’t trust himself to control it in case of emergency. I assume he never truly unleashed his power wholly without obsessively keeping it under control.

        • Luke Confidential

Technically he’s not lying though. It’s not that he refuses to use it because of his vow, he refused to even learn it.

Thus he has zero attack spells in his repertoire, until he chooses to learn it [which would require overcoming his trauma] he has no ability to attack.

          • Robin

No, he never lied. He simply didn’t expose his painful past and the reason WHY he can’t use them. And his comrades accepted him as he is which really surprised him. I guess it was the first time since his parents died.

        • Luke Confidential

Technically he’s not lying though. It’s not that he refuses to use it because of his vow, he refused to even learn it.

Thus he has zero attack spells in his repertoire, until he chooses to learn it [which would require overcoming his trauma] he has no ability to attack.

  • VanillaCustardPie

    Thank you~

  • Luke Confidential

I’m calling it now guys. Lin Xin is going to continue to refuse to study offensive magic, but is going to be dragged into a desperate situation similar to this one, with all of his friends injured beyond the ability to fight and their live’s on the line, with the full knowledge that him sacrificing his life first will do nothing but delay the inevitable by a few short seconds.

In that moment of desperation he’ll break through his trauma, and the value of the immense magical control he’s developed will shine through.

We will witness the birth of the first instinctive mage, one who does not research/study/learn/cast spells, but instead directly manipulates fire magic according to the needs of the situation.

    • Robin

I like the thought, but I doubt it. So far there was no technique or power who didn’t need intense training to be acquired. As long as he really refuses to learn the spells and doesn’t so it in secet (what I dont see coming or deem probable) he will still be unable to wield magic. And he would never dare to use attack magic if it is not tightly controled out of fear to lose control like his father did.

      • Luke Confidential

While I respect your thoughts, I would ask you to look back to the display Lin Xin performed to con his way through the preliminaries.

His talent at manipulating magic likely exceed that of anyone else presently alive, only his spiritual energy and repertoire of structured spells are more limited.

In a way, instinctive magical use seems like it could be less dangerous than attempting to research structured spells that draw on forces the practitioner has limited understanding of.

More flexible, less powerful [until he grows into it.]

        • Robin

Taking the fact that his father probably used formal spells into account, you may be right. And his understanding of the workings of magic. Nevertheless, he is a control freak. And I think it above him to simply act against this trait to suddenly activate attack magic.

I don’t understand why his conning ability speaks against my theory. Being sly and brack a codex which he kept even under pressure for many years are two entirely different matters.

          • Daene Kendrick

He also doesnt have the time to do so, with cultivation, alchemy research, and coming up with ways to extend the resources available to the team. He has a full plate during off hours. His learning attack magic within this squad is unneccessary. He also knows what LHC expects from him.

          • Robin

Yes, he has already a full plate and a team supporting his stand. I just doesn’t see him learn attacking magic. At least without his friends helping him overcome his trauma.

          • Daene Kendrick

Also he used defensive magic to force the Fiend Commander away from the entrance. He can use his defensive spells to suppress the enemy. His trauma is probably what has lead him to master all the skills he currently knows so as to alleviate the need to cast offensive spells. I wouldnt change anything about any of the people in the 21st except for them to mature, get better equipment, and learn to think along the line LHC thinks, leave the impulse the blind rage at the door and focus on survivial.

          • Jonathan Hurd

I have to say I’m with Robin when it comes to Lin Xin. While I do totally agree coming up with some insane offensive fire magic spell in a desperate moment would be fun, but it just doesn’t seem to match Lin Xin’s character. I think the point of his having such extreme control of his magic actually points to the opposite side of him being willing to experiment. Hes a control freak terrified of his own power and what could happen if he ever lost control. That kind of personality doesn’t really seem likely to suddenly throw caution to the wind. Add in the fact that from what the story said I think he lost both his parents to his father experimenting with offensive magic and that is a pretty extreme trauma to overcome in the heat of a moment. I mean sure he might get backed into a corner, but I think what would be running through his mind in that situation could be “better for my comrades to lose their life to a demon than for me to kill them”.

I will say though that I think what might be more likely to happen is that LHC and the team will help him come to terms with his ability and gain more confidence. We have already seen LHC help Cai’er overcome her trauma and hatred for even her own family so I think LHC could help Lin Xin some too. The other thing I think that might happen is that Lin Xin after seeing just how much risk and cost Cai’er and LHC pay to protect the team will mentally be driven to increase his ability to help and protect them.

Honestly I think the person that could help Lin Xin the most might actually be Cai’er. She like him has a power that could kill her if not controlled carefully. I think it might be nicer instead of some instant break through for Lin Xin to eventually overcome his trauma to help protect his precious comrades who have accepted all parts of him.

          • Robin

You are right, Cai’er is the person most likely to succeed in helping him. As she gabe the little summoner the pep talk about looking beyond the outward appearance of her piggy, especially because she is usually quiet, she sees a lot and when she talks, her words have meaning. She probably can relate to his pain.
Didn’t think about that combination. *thumbs up*

          • Jonathan Hurd

A big part of why Cai’er could help him in my mind is that she is really the only one in the team who is also working with a power that could just as easily turn on her or her comrades. I think its that experience that can really help Lin Xin come to terms and the biggest part that can help him relate to her. Everyone else can offer sympathy but only Cai’er truly understands the difficulties that come with a great and unstable power.

          • Luke Confidential

Well, and Austin Griffin, but he doesn’t speak Human. [And he probably doesn’t have those memories.]

          • Jonathan Hurd

Its honestly hard to tell exactly how much Hao Yue knows. I mean its pretty obvious he is not sharing everything about himself just yet even with his link through LHC, but it is hard to guess just how much is being with held. I would really like him to elaborate about his world personally.

          • Robin

He seems to know a lot more than he even tells Haochen. There were occasions when he asked Haochen to simply trust him like with the orb for his last evolution. Outwardly he behaves like a child towards Haochen, or at least did so in the past, but inwardly, he is more like an elder towards Haochen. Sometimes even like a parent or owner, deciding what he should know and what he shoudn’t. This makes it hard to judge his end of the relationship.

          • Jonathan Hurd

In the end the only thing I can truly conclude about Hao Yue’s relationship to LHC is that he indeed loves him. Honestly the amount of times Hao Yue has saved LHC and fought in life or death situations basically completely attests to that. Still freaking hoping and praying for the next evolution personally. I want 5 headed Hao Yue! How OP is he going to be then?

          • Robin

And that he was willing to do the blood contract with Haochen, so his life is basically bound to Haochen’s. He would die if Haochen died, and even though we learned that Demon Hunters of a certain power level have a long life, he will die with Haochen even if he could live longer without the contract.
And we had the case with the fairy when he defended his rightful place but didn’t went overboard to protect Haochen from taking damage. Then we had a reference, that the old Haoyue wouldn’t have stopped but answered the challenge in kind.

          • Jonathan Hurd

What I really like about LHC is that all the big things he earns he usually gets from his kind heart. Cai’er being his waifu, Hao Yue his partner, and even that Elemental Spiritual Stove all came from his innate kindness. None of them would be as attached to him if he acted differently upon their first meeting. What I really love about him too is that he was kind with absolutely no ulterior motives. He helped Cai’er because she was in trouble, Hao Yue because Hao Yue accepted him, and even Yating he let her go with the full intention of making sure she would be able to be happy. He did each thing not expecting a thing in return and completely happy to do it because it was the right thing to do.

I do also wonder about what Hao Yue’s expected life span is. To be fair LHC is technically the disciple of Slumbering Calamity Elux who apparently was able to live for around a thousand years. I assume he could share the secret to that kind of life span so I don’t think we have to worry too much about Hao Yue dying prematurely.

          • Robin

Yeah with honey you caatch flies. It is simply cute how naively pure he is and at the same time such a fierce fighter. This is a tender balance, which is about to tip right now due to his anger. A complete new experience for him.

True, but I doubt he would want to live much longer than his companions. Naturally, it is not said that they would keep their DHS active for that long, but if they plan to follow in the footsteps of the Demon God Slayers, the Bright Rays of Sunlight will have to work long and steadily. We will need to wai and see what the story has prepared for them in the future.

I hope they don’t return through the Exorcist Mountain Pass when they return. This would be a scene when her parents and great-grandpa would see them together like this. I guess Sheng Yue would learn about her state one way or the other but not necessarily her parents, if Haochen doesn’t feel obliged to inform them. This option is not unlikely when we take their newly improved relationship into consideration.
At least Cai’er is unable to hear Sheng Yue’s scolding tirade?

          • Jonathan Hurd

I think at this point both Sheng Yue and Cai’er’s parents understand LHC’s character and would realize there is no way that LHC would ever want or purposefully let this happen. While yes they will all be worried about her I don’t think they will blame LHC especially after they find out about the sheer power of the opponents they were facing with only two DHS’s. I mean considering that as the story has told us these Fiend Calvary are foes that cause even the Brilliant Angel Regiment troubles. The sheer amount of Fiend Calvary LHC’s group have rid the world of is kind of astounding. Sheng Yue has already warned Cai’er to only use the Spiritual Stove of Samsara if her life is in danger and in that situation it most definitely was. While it is important to be careful with a power with such severe backlash what is the point of owning something like that if you do not use it in situations that require it?

          • Luke Confidential

My reference to his conning wasn’t about the manipulation of people, but the manipulation of magic used at that time.

What I’m saying is that because he has such control of magic, when he has no other way AND knows for a fact that there is no cavalry that could come rushing out of the cave and there is no Retribution Knight and Assassin Knight out on the field of battle to work with AND knows that throwing his life away won’t have the slightest hope of saving the others, he has the potential to instinctively attack with his magic without learning a single ‘offensive spell.’

That having his back against the wall with zero hope of saving his friends whether or not he discards his life may push him into a breakthrough that very few mages in history- and likely none alive at present- have been capable of. Direct magic without the use of structured spells.

          • Robin

Not impossible. But I see a certain weakness in his character. The pressure would need to be immense or he surely would rather cave in as he did in the past. When he entered the story, he was likely to give in under pressure, like if Haochen would have broken his word. He would have resigned himself to it as he did to not getting the recognition of his family.
Of course, his character could evolve, getting more selfconfidence and a stronger will. Then I think it could happen. But as he is right now, I can’t imagine him acting like you pictured it.

          • Luke Confidential

I can certainly see him on the path to becoming that man. I didn’t claim it would happen while the squad is still 5th Step.

    • Daene Kendrick

LOL dont bring the Kingdom Manga into this with instinctive skill use. No as long as LHC is around from this point on I do not forsee a situation as dire as this one arising. Again had LHC been present it wouldnt have come to this and the others wouldnt have been on defensive strategy. I think Luc Xin the priest should have made a battle plan ahead of time with caier and han yu so that it wasnt a last minute thrown together defense.

      • Robin

They all trusted Haochen’s estimate that they would be safe without thinking for themselves. They probably learned from this fight as well, that they can’t only depend on him but should at least be able to carry themselves well in a fight. Even Haochen can’t have his eyes everywhere. A similar mistake almost killed them in the huge caravan battle before. Then they were also defending and messed up.

        • Daene Kendrick

Well remember the 21st doesnt have as much experience as the 4th DHS. Tactical erros were made you should never fully relax in enemy territory. True their dependence on LHC in the future to plan everything should wain and they should start taking from his lead bc he never actually let down his guard. They should have took some kind of planning into consideration. just as a precaution.

          • Robin

I was mostly talking about the 4th squad making planning mistakes.

          • Daene Kendrick

they did, but I also hold Han Yu a little at falt he should have had his companion out scouting.

          • Robin

Yes, this would have been a clever action to take. He was probably too worried about his master.

          • Daene Kendrick

I think it was more along him just follow Cai’er s example of just relaxing about the situation with LHC being gone. Still he knows now that his job is to be the core when LHC isnt able to , like with the Caravan battle he stood where LHC was when LHC went on the offensive, its a learning situation. In the future I dont see him making the same mistake. He may not be Captain or Vice Captain but he is still one of the 3 strongest in the team.

          • Robin

Yeah, I don’t see him make this mistae twice either. He learns fast. When he returns his grandfather won’t recognize him anymore. 😉

          • Jonathan Hurd

I would just point out that they did have the 4th squads assassin out scouting. That is how they found out about the Fiend Troops ahead of time. Also the situation they found themselves in was never intended to happen. Remember the Original plan was that LHC and Hao Yue are connected so if danger happened on either side LHC would just teleport back to Hao Yue. Hao Yue disappearing was completely unexpected twist that cut them off from having LHC rejoin immediately. Now this does prove back up plans are important and it is also definitely true that LHC was a bit lax in returning because of an assumption. I just don’t feel its entirely fair to blame the lack of foresight on Luc Xi and the rest since this was never supposed to happen. This whole situation has definitely shown just how much they rely on LHC, but at the same time I don’t think it is completely wrong to plan around having your full fighting strength.

      • Luke Confidential

Not familiar with the Kingdom Manga in any way whatsoever.

You are right that so long as LHC is available, such a scenario would never occur… unless LHC were overwhelmed. Bear in mind LHC functions as both the core of the team AND its vanguard in serious combats, taking the brunt of the enemy while the Warrior and Priest strike at the flanks.

Thus I can certainly see such a scenario potentially arising. Whether or not it will, that remains to be seen.

        • Daene Kendrick

LHC doesnt go on the offensive unless he believes that his team can handle the defense while he focuses on his attack. But after whats about to happen I think all bets are going to be off on even attempting to ever put a limit on what LHC is capable of in combat, as he is bout to take on this whole new unit all on his own while carrying cai’er on his back.

          • Luke Confidential

We also don’t know what is IN this whole new unit. For all we know it might be 30-some Grand Fiends [and their mounts] with nothing above the peak of the 4th step. Which is freaking ridiculous for an upper-mid 5th-stepper to pull off, but not quite as extreme as you’re implying.

          • Daene Kendrick

Only time will tell. Even if they have some sixth step amongst them LHC’s new attack Asura SLash breaks through all defenses as was mentioned in previous chapters. dont forget Hao Yue disabaling spell will weaken them all as well.

          • Luke Confidential

This minimum of which you speak, there is no guarantee. It’s possible they were part of a camp the previous two 6th step commander were from, doing manual setup while the Commanders and Lord went to survey the area.

          • Daene Kendrick

As someone with military experience I would believe that as fast as this group is responding. There must be someone leading them. Thus a Fiend Commander is a logical conclusion, as I wouldnt leave a group of that size to do any kind of camp establishment etc without some form of leadership.

          • Luke Confidential

And you’re certain that no individuals within a ‘rank/class’ might be capable as a provisional leader?

Aren’t military commanders fully capable of selecting a provisional leader from among an equal ranked group?

          • Robin

As it seems that intelligence goes along with higher rank within the demon army, I would side with Daene in this case. It is not impossible but a higher ranking commander is more likely than one of the same rank as his minions.

          • Jonathan Hurd

Also from what was mentioned when Yin Er’s piggy transformed into that Fiend Lord, the Fiend’s hierarchy is absolute. While there is certainly a chance of them not having a higher step leader I feel like their current patterns point to a high probability of one. The way the Fiends are setup kind of reminds me of Feudal Europe’s setup. You have the lord and then he conscripts knights to fight under him. The idea being that one lord would control his knights and then someone higher would control all the lords.

          • Jonathan Hurd

I would say considering that both of the previous two Demon Fiend troops both had someone to lead, and they seem to work in a very militaristic fashion it seems quite likely there will be another leader for this troop. I would also have to say that LHC will kill whoever it is at this point. Considering he can strike down a 6th stepper with relative ease even when he hasn’t done his fusion with Hao Yue. Time for a blood bath, imo.

  • Gator

    thanks for the chapter totobro

  • Zeth

    Thank you very much Totobro!

  • Inuzuka

I get he hasn’t learned any offensive spells, but shouldn’t he have compensated by learning every other frikkin fire spell that exists? Not just the defensive spells but the support spells and any hidden spells that he can get from his grandfather.

5th step Earth Mage that vs’d LHC in the tournament was able to summon an Earth Golem, so why can’t our 5th step Fire Mage summon a Fire Golem to attack for him?

    • Jonathan Hurd

Well he has shown that he can use that eagle eyes spell to scout things so he does seem to know a decent amount of support spells. As far as a Fire Golem goes…. First off, now I want to see one… Second I think that might be categorized as a offensive spell.

      • Luke Confidential

It might just not exist. Golems are often considered an earth magic.

        • Jonathan Hurd

In that particular chapter they said that Earth Golems were the most effective at defense among the Golems. So I am pretty sure there is other types. A big thing to remember about that Earth Golem though is that it was a 6th step spell if I am not mistaken and it took that Earth Elemental mage plus his Spiritual Stove working together to put it together. After using it too it almost completely drained everything he had. Something like that is a good all in, but they never really had that kind of time to prep it since Lin Xin was required to keep repelling and putting up Elemental Shields to stop the fiends assault.

          • Jonathan Hurd

Okay looked back through the chapters and apparently The Earth golem was a peak 5th step spell. It was the second spell that let him shift the ground that was a 6th level spell I think. Still the cast time was humongous even for the earth elemental.

          • Robin

The more they fight together the better their teamwork will get. And now that they know his limitations, they can help him pick new spells when they get back and exchange their CP. They surely will reflect on their experiences and talk about how they can avoid the same mistakes in the future. This will include picking spells that might help them cover their weaknesses.
I also want him to summon a fire golem. It could have sat in front of the cavern and simply block it. 😉
But since the Fiends are of fire and darkness attribute, I am not sure how effective fire spells would have been.

          • Jonathan Hurd

The big thing about their team is that it honestly has a stupid amount of offensive power. I mean their shield warrior and priest both don’t do defense or utility but have gone all out offensive. If Lin Xin and Han Yu weren’t picking up the slack in those departments the whole team would be just one gigantic glass cannon. Sure with a mage that could attack they would probably be the most offensively oriented DHS but I honestly don’t think that would be worth it.

The shopping list when they get back is getting more and more interesting honestly. LHC would never take the team out till Cai’er is completely recovered so they will have a break of at least 7 months to solidify all the things they have gained and train. Pretty sure LHC will easily make it to 6th step. Who knows maybe Cai’er will be able to get close to breaking through as well with that amount of time. I also really want to know what Lin Xin ends up making with the sheer amount of raw materials he is now packing.

          • Robin

He will be happily busy with all the things he can play with. After the seven months they will have a whole arsenal of pills and supporting stuff. And no, Haochen won’t risk Cai’er and carry her around like a small child. Piggy-backing her is in its own way already sooooooo awesomely cute!

Without Han Yu the team would have been in danger more than once. It was such a lucky thing that Haochen gained him as retainer. And it is only just that Han Yu gains some profit from it as well. After five years he will not only be completely battle proofed, but also an expert in his job and simply powerful. Even if he wouldn’t stay with the team, he would surely be sought after by all sorts of places.

          • Jonathan Hurd

I do have to say it is pretty adorable but also kind of funny that he can actually put his Holy Spirit armor over Cai’er and him together. Kind of wonder what that looks like, heh. I think he will be willing to walk around normally with her outside of combat, but that is a whole new level of dedication to charge in carrying your sweetheart on your back.

For Han Yu I think hes going to stick with LHC as long as LHC will let him. I mean how could you have any better future prospects than being on the same team as the Saint Daughter of Samsara and the Scion of Light. Not to mention all the things you can learn from observing LHC. Now that he has finally gotten a taste of what LHC has been facing all this time through so many battles I can only imagine his respect for LHC rising.

          • Robin

I would love to see this. Picturing it is simply not enough.
Guess hes getting a lot of excercise for later offspring. 😉

He will stay at his side, this is definite. They are not only bound by the contract which brings him an advantage for his cultivation, they also have the soul linking chains. Yes, they can deactivate them, but still, they are for ever a team.

          • Jonathan Hurd

To be fair the team would honestly be kind of screwed if they lost Han Yu. I mean Sima Xian actually can’t learn healing spells so without Han Yu even if they all become relatively powerful they will really lack in methods to recover from wounds in battle.

          • Robin

We don’t know if they don’t learn to compensate in 5 years. But yeah, they would be the ones losing out. Because in this constellation each of them can concentrate on theirr respective strengths. Without him everyone would need to behave differently.

          • Jonathan Hurd

Big bro has drugs definitely can help soften the blow of losing Han Yu, but to me that still does not fully fill the humongous gap that would be left behind by him leaving. Imo, unless they could figure out a way to get Sima Xian to learn healing spells or Yin Er could summon a magical beast that can do healing I feel it would be too big a blow to them.

  • Jonathan Hurd

So we all know this next battle will be a blood bath what I am hoping beyond hope is that he is so enraged that he will actually use some of his newly learned necromancy, :D. I really really want to see what he could do with that.

    • Robin

      A lot. ^^

      • Jonathan Hurd

I swear if he starts raising the already dead Fiends and using them to attack the newly arrived Fiends…. Come on LHC show people why everyone feared the Necro’s of old!

        • Robin

At them moment he is only interested in mowing down Fiends. He would not like the idea of raising them again, not even for his own purpose.

          • Jonathan Hurd

True…. Still want to see some raising dead skeletons or zombie necromancy. It would be such a waste not to use his newly gained Necromancy powers. 😀

          • Daene Kendrick

He may absorb their energy as he fights to replish his own spiritual energey as he defeats them much as the necklace is doing to strengthen the towers defenses

What’s this “Out of the six senses, she actually lost four of them?” about? The sense of smell, I guess was the one she didn’t have because she discarded it as her choice as she had to discard one of them but then again what is the meaning of this “When this familiar smell appeared in Cai’er’s perception, she immediately trembled upon realization. The hope she had deep inside became an inferno, about to burst out from her.” If she lost those four senses shouldn’t she only have the sense of touch and the 6th one?
