Shen Yin Wang Zuo, Chapter 249

Shen Yin Wang Zuo, Chapter 249: Fiend Lord of the Seventh Step (III)

Hiding in the cavern, Yi Jun had a pale face. This spatial spell he just launched came with a quite important consumption, and he didn’t think that it would get so easily blocked by the Fiend Lord, to the extent that it hadn’t caused any damage in FIends’ ranks.

Just at this time, the two Demon Hunt Squads’ offense was launched at full swing.

Ten bright red sharp thorns immediately brought ear piercing sound just at the time the defensive spell dissipated.

Back then, Yang Wenzhao had a headache from confronting these thorn’s attack, but this time, Bai Xiaomo managed to actually release a dozen more of them. That was to say how her strength increased along with the continuous experience she had gotten.

The Fiend Commander in the front was already going all out to block it, but only three sharp thorns were aiming at him and no more. These sharp thorns launched by Bai Xiaomo worked in an extremely tricky way, shooting from every direction.

The Grand Fiends would obviously show some resistance, but it wasn’t so easy for them to block these attacks launched by Bai Xiaomo. At least five Grand Fiends ended up wounded to different degrees, and a bloody fog spread out.

And this was just the beginning, before a great amount of green beads descended from the sky. These beads seemed to envelop the entirety of the Grand Fiend Cavalry in their range.

Just as the Fiend Lord had figured out what those beads were, a terrible killing intent locked on him, appearing the same as the descent of a god of death.

Even a powerhouse of the seventh step like this Fiend Lord trembled with his whole body from the lock, and the ability that he had just finished preparing was interrupted. With his cultivation, he could easily sense what is dangerous and what is not, and those beads in the air didn’t look to be of any danger to him, whereas this approaching killing intent seemed to be an existence that could threaten his life!

The Fiend Commander in the backrow also wanted to release a defensive area ability to stop these green beads falling from the sky, but unfortunately, just at the instant that it was released, an ice-cold chill quietly reached his neck.

A Fiend Commander of the sixth step would obviously be fast to react. As he waved the spear in his hand horizontally, his Nightmare Devil Horse simultaneously let out a dark red radiance from its mouth.

A shadow flashed, stopping in the middle of its attack, without really entering direct contact with the Fiend’s body. But even so, the huge beads in the sky already spread within the ranks of this Grand Fiend Cavalry.

The beans ruptured, letting out a viscous liquid that immediately infected the Grand Fiends and their Nightmare Devil Horses. This sticky feeling was hard to bear, but these Grand Fiends and their Nightmare Devil Horses had darkness and fire dual attributes, and possessed the so called Hell Flame ability, which naturally suppressed Bai Xiaomo’s botanical summons. Releasing flames around, they set this viscous liquid on flames.

The one that pinned down the Fiend Lord was of course Cai’er, as the other Fiend Commander of the sixth step was pinned down by the threat of the assassin Han Daosi. Although Han Daosi was far from being able to compare with Cai’er’s strength, how could an assassin that managed to enter the top sixty of the ranking be an ordinary person?

In a real battle, although he was obviously no match for this Fiend Commander, if it was only about pinning him down for a second or two, he could do it in a short time.

As the rear was in a state of confusion, some changes already started to appear on the battle in the front.

The Fiend Commander of the sixth step that was hit by three of the thorns immediately locked his gaze on the location of the two Demon Hunt Squads, but without giving him time to head out in their direction, a dark red figure suddenly appeared in front of them, blocking his path of return.

This silhouette was massive, and had two huge wings unfolded at his back, giving off a fierce and malevolent look. It was exactly the Fiend Lord!

The difference of social class in the Fiends’ world was distinct. Seeing his immediate superior block him, the Fiend Commander that was prepared to attack immediately stared blankly, naturally stopping his move. The Fiend Lord before him didn’t say anything special, only lifting up his right claw and pointing at his back. Just when the Fiend Commander turned back, at the split second he turned back, a miraculous scene happened at his back. A great change happened on the huge silhouette of the Fiend Commander of seventh step at his back unexpectedly produced a sudden change, turning into a dual-winged Grand Birdy Demon.

Let alone the Fiend Cavalry, even the 21st general grade Demon Hunt Squad and the 4th soldier grade Demon Hunt Squad were extremely shocked from looking at this bizarre scene

A golden spear filled with lightning firmly hit the Fiend Commander’s back, breaking out with a gaudy electric light, causing this Fiend Commander to let out a miserable scream.

If it was about a head-on battle, it would be hard to predict who between the Grand Birdy Demon or the Fiend Commander would be winning. A Grand Birdy Demon did hold the aerial advantage, whereas a Fiend Commander had the support of his mount. However, it was another story in case of a sneak attack.

The Fiend Leader obviously didn’t have the slightest wariness towards the Fiend Lord’s words, but how could he guess that he would fall into such a fatal trap.

Still, his Nightmare Devil Horse was a magical beast of the fifth step. Seeing its rider being attacked, it immediately tried to defend him, attempting to slam into the Grand Birdy Demon.

The Grand Birdy Demon’s reaction was fast. Clapping the wings at its back while infusing power into the lightning lance in his hand, he immediately set in midair as the powerful lightning spiritual energy broke out all-around. Heavily wounded, the Fiend Commander’s body produced a scorched smell and the Nightmare Devil Horse he rode let out a miserable shriek, convulsing from the impulse of the lightning.

The Grand Birdy Demon was pitiless, putting strength in swinging his lance, extracting it from the back of the Fiend Commander that was already seriously wounded while taking advantage of the Nightmare Devil Horse’s paralysed state. The spear was ferociously thrusted in his body, relying on the formidable attack power of its user to end the life of this Nightmare Devil Horse.

A thick staff was lifted high in the sky, striking the Fiend Commander on his head, just like a wooden stick meeting with a watermelon. Just then, a colored liquid spread in the air from it; it looked as if this Fiend Commander of the sixth step was dead.

The Grand Birdy Demon didn’t stay idle, and immediately batted his wings after getting rid of the first Fiend Commander, flying above the Fiend Cavalry like a tiger picking at a flock of sheeps.

Originally, this Fiend Cavalry had one Fiend Commander guarding the rear and one guarding the front, in addition to the Fiend Lord seated in the middle of the formation. The formation in the front, which was completely firm just before, seemed to have just been broken as its core was destroyed. The Grand Fiend Cavalry was not lacking in strength, but was overcome by panic. The great majority of their troops just finished to deal with the liquid released from the many beads.

However, Bai Xiaomo’s yellow plants with an appearance close to corals were not only able to spray a single array of thorns. At the same time the Grand Birdy Demon flapped his wings, another dozen bolts of lightning were released at the same times as another batch of beads was released.

An immense shield was flung at the side, carrying a mournful hissing sound engulfing everything. Three or four of the Grand Fiends were immediately swept away by its force.

On the other side, Sima Xian held his staff high in the air, this time releasing the ability Madness. The staff in his hand was waved at great speed, launching Sacred Bullet Array’s unfathomable attacks, immediately followed by Wang Yuanyuan whose Gigantic Divine Soul Shield was waved violently at the enemy’s ranks, spreading havoc at their side, aiming primarily at those of the Grand Fiends that lost their Nightmare Devil Horses.

At the time Wang Yuanyuan and Sima Xian came out, Dian Yan and Han Yu stayed in the cavern. People inside had all mage vocations, and thus needed their protection.

After releasing his first huge spell, Yi Jun kept blasting one spatial spell after another, giving the warriors in the front a strong backup.

The current situation looked like a piece of cake, but just at this moment, the formidable Fiend Lord of the seventh step made his move.

If not for Cai’er pinning him down, how could this Fiend Cavalry possessing a Fiend Lord as its general be so easy to deal with? However, the Fiend Commander in the front had just been killed and the subordinate soldiers were being cut down like fresh meat, one after another. The Fiend Lord immediately lost his cool from such a situation. He was after all not a human, and wouldn’t give too much thought to tactics. As he swept his blood-colored sword, his Nightmare Devil Horse suddenly jumped horizontally, almost instantly appearing before the Grand Birdy Demon that slaughtered one of the Fiend Commanders.

The Grand Birdy Demon had just disposed of one of the Grand Fiends and his Nightmare Devil Horse, but caught off guard by the attack, he swept the lightning spear in his hand while turning back with a sideways motion.

The Fiend Lord hated this Grand Birdy Demon bitterly. With a chop from his blood-colored sword, a five meters long dark red luster came into being, fiercely chopping down at this Grand Birdy Demon’s spear.

The difference of step between the two manifested undoubtedly at that time. With a scream from the Grand Birdy Demon, the lightning spear in his hand instantly snapped, and the massive impact from the strike caused his body to be sent flying in the air.

A massive dark red shield made of energy was erected at the back of this Fiend Lord, protecting his back from the countless white glows bursting forth to his direction. Turning back, he launched a blood-colored cut, carrying an imposing dark-red radiance.

The dark red colored radiance was hitting from all direction, aiming at Cai’er who was unleashing her Thousand Strikes Spiritual Stove. The attack forced her to meet it head-on.

With a flash, Cai’er’s body was smashed to pieces, but this was a mere afterimage, as Cai’er’s physical body was already meters away. Even so, the Fiend Lord’s tyrannical power still brought her body an intense pressure. With a flicker, it vanished gradually in the darkness.

Cai’er wouldn’t easily launch her Spiritual Stove of Samsara, because it would not only cause some self-damage, but it would also use the integrality of her spiritual energy. It was something she kept for the last blow.

After forcing Cai’er back with his blow, the Fiend Lord didn’t pursue and attack. As he looked up at the sky with a massive roar, the remaining dozen of Grand Fiend as well as the last Fiend Commander rapidly gathered by his side.

“Come back, all of you.” Luc Xi’s voice rang out, and that Grand Birdy Demon turned back in midair at fast speed. A deep scar could be clearly seen on his chest, which was to say that if his reaction had been just a little slower, the previous blow would have been enough to cut him in two parts.

This was the strength of the seventh step. Furthermore, this Fiend Lord visibly hadn’t just reached the seventh step. At least, he was at the fourth or the fifth rank of the seventh step.

Wang Yuanyuan and Sima Xian didn’t zealously keep fighting, rapidly retreating to the direction of the cave. Cai’er and Han Daosi also came back after making a detour.

  • CInnaTheMon

    So caier equals wounded?
LHC sacrifice skill into ded fiend lord inc, I feel it.

    • Jonathan Hurd

Part of me is kind of happy to see the others using their abilites. The other part of me is hoping LHC will show up and save the day :D. So conflicted.

      • Robin

It is nice that the others get a little airing time. ^^
But I guess our hero still needs to save the day. They won’t be able to kill the enemies withour him, or they will really lose someone. Or Cai’er will need to heavily rely on her Spiritual Stove of Samsara and we all know how that ends.

        • Luke Confidential

I’m rather looking forward to Lin Xin showing the 4th Soldier Squad just how valuable an asset he is in battle.

          • Robin

Also a nice idea. I admit, I forgot Haochen’s prediction that in case of a battle they would learn his true worth. And “Brother has drugs” has still not started distributing candy so you may be right. There will still be time before Haochen arrives. 😉

          • Jonathan Hurd

I have to admit been really looking forward to someone finally eating that blood thirsty pill he made. I mean how many chapters and fights ago did he make that? I kept thinking during the caravan battle LHC would pop one T.T. Also to be fair Lin Xin is a pretty bad ass magician I mean he actually managed to complete two overlapping elemental shields before during their debut fight with their 7th step Guardian Knight Leader. That takes some major skill and speed. His potential in a attrition battle is definitely going to show. He can help defend against blows and his pills can help restore. Only problem is there is no LHC so lets pray that Han Yu’s grandpa taught Han Yu Divine Obstruction or no one may be able to go toe to toe against that 7th step without LHC present.

          • Robin

There IS no one who can go toe to toe with the Fiend Lord. Even Cai’er needs the cover of a knight to fully enfold her potential. Han Yu can’t leave his post as guardian, and even if Li Xin wanted to attack the Lord directly she would fail. I think she is still weaker than Han Yu. The elemental shields are a good second layer of protection but they didn’t hold long in that fight either and then their leader wasn’t even really serious.
The pill would bring a lot of fun! My pick would be the female shield warrior or/and Sima Xian. They are a good offensive force, can work in cooperation and have the Soul Linking Chains as security line. And they have the pills. 😉
The caravan battle was not the right time for it since Haochen needed to plan their escape and coordinate with his team, en passant whipping them into shape, and the author is tricky: introducing something and then waiting until veryone almost forgot until using it again. Now would really be a good timing for this.

          • Jonathan Hurd

I think LHC has a pretty decent chance of being able to at least block the opponent especially if he combined Divine Obstruction with Ripples of Light. For the others it would honestly probably be too dangerous for them to try to block the Fiend Lord with their power alone. I feel Han Yu might be able to do something if his Grandpa gave him Divine Obstruction and then you add some elemental shields from Lin Xin and the Priest. I think adding Lin Xin’s pills in he might finally be able to last till LHC shows back up. Only problem though is that Han Yu lacks the Saint Spiritual Stove which forces the biggest baddy to focus him.

          • Robin

In either case the team will value Haochen’s presence even more in the future. This battle epically portrayed how important he is for the team and how lost they are without his leadership.

          • Jonathan Hurd

I think their battle strategy given the current situation is the correct choice. What they need mainly is time. They started by reducing the numbers of the opponents as far as possible with a quick surprise attack and after the surprise wore off they are now shifting to a choke point. If they had just sat back and waited without the surprise attack they would have a lot more enemies to deal with. If they went for a full out assault they are very likely to lose someone with the difference in power between them and the demons. What they need is LHC back. With him then they can potentially win against this army or if that is not an option drive them off a bit and retreat. I will admit I don’t a 100% like the priest and he really isn’t quite the leader that LHC is, but in this case the decision is correct.

          • Robin

Indeed, it is the correct choice and Luc Xi gives the correct orders. Adding Cai’er and her battle instinct to the mixture the situation gains a chance of success. But you can’t win a fight simply by defending, especially if the difference in strength between the attackers and the defenders is so large. And the assassin asssault highly depends on the surprise effect. Without the shining light at the frontline they can’t hide in the shadows. It will be hard without Haochen. The next chapters will bring many interesting developments. 😉

          • Jonathan Hurd

Oh definitely, :D. They need LHC there. I love the pairing of Cai’er and LHC because it is such a perfect match. The coordination between the two is always a joy. I liked the moment when she jumped on his shoulder and started cutting down missiles and also when he launched her then dragged himself to her, hehe. The main reason I agree with a defensive battle for now is they need LHC back. With their current strength lacking him they stand no chance of victory so their options are stalling or retreat. However if they tried retreating that leads to the problem of LHC potentially fighting this group by himself and/or difficulty regrouping. Much better to get a few quick stabs in and hold out till he can rejoin. Hopefully he can launch his own surprise attack while the demons focus on the combined squads. This way they might be able to deal another massive blow that would either turn the tides for victory or at least force the demons to retreat. Either case the Demon Hunt Squads would be together again and have the chance to start retreating out. Once they leave this conspicuous area they can re-disguise as Moon Clan members and make a pretty safe trip back.

  • Schattenbach

Thanks for the chapter. Some points I noticed …

    # “that Grand Fiend turned back in midair at fast speed” … shouldn’t it be Grand Birdy Demon instead of Grand Fiend here?

    # “was Haoyue with his Essence of Darkness” … Essence of Disorder?

    # “tri-elemental spell was enough to weaken the Grand Fiend Cavalry’s strength by at least twice” … by at least half?

    • thx, fixed!!!

      • Schattenbach

Something else I’ve just noticed …

“A massive dark red shield made of energy was erected at the back of
this Fiend Commander, protecting his back from the countless white glows
bursting forth to his direction. Turning back, he launched a
        blood-colored
cut, carrying an imposing dark-red radiance.” … I might be wrong but
it looks like this bit is about the Fiend Lord instead of the Fiend
        Commander.

  • termt

Sooo… there was a second Fiend Lord which was actually a Birdy Demon in disguise? It sounded a bit odd, seeing as the text a bit earlier only mentioned one Fiend Lord.

    • Cyrs

No…there is no second fiend lord. The other fiend lord is probably Chen Ying’er’s mirror pig. Which transformed into the physical form of a fiend lord, to get the fiend commander to let it’s guard down. Then used the magic crystal of a grand birdy demon to transform again, and attack the commander. The pig can transform into any demon it has seen, but it can only use the powers of a demon it has the magic crystal for. While they don’t have the magic crystal of a fiend lord…they do have grand birdy demon crystals.

      • Robin

You grasped the situation completely. That part is truly a bit confusing but how does the saying go? If you want to deceive your enemies, start with your friends, or your readers in this case. 😉

        • Jonathan Hurd

Really enjoyed that part. So happy that the piggy is getting more and more showcase. Freaking hilarious watching him backstab that Fiend Commander.

          • Robin

Indeed it was! You could simply imagine that confused face of that Fiend. The piggy slowly gets used to its abilities and will have an even stronger impact. ^^
The whole arc is and will be awesome!

          • Jonathan Hurd

I kind of enjoy that he evolves by tricking things and transforming. That means that we are probably going to get to enjoy quite a few more scenes like this, hehe.

          • Robin

I guess so. And again we have a similarity. Aren’t you also reminded of Oscars sixth spirit ability?

          • Jonathan Hurd

Have to admit there is definitely some similarities but the uses and setup are a bit different. For the piggy its his main focus and even how he develops his strength. Something I have to admit that I enjoy about this author is how he emphasizes tactics in his writings. I especially like how he shows that strength is not always the thing that wins a battle sometimes it is brains.

          • Robin

The battle strategies and their detailed description, including exact explanations, are what I truly value about this author as well. It is as you said, not always strength that wins but also a good portion of luck combined with cleverness. Not two fights are identical and they always have a nice twist to them.
Also, the way he reuses some ideas but gives them a new turn resulting in a different development, is ingenious. Similar enough to give a feeling of familiarity but not the same so it doesn’t gets boring.

          • Jonathan Hurd

I gotta admit I love his battle scenes. For me my favorite battles always involve Tang San and how he acts like the perfect puppet master manipulating his opponents in such a way to eventually entrap them without them realizing what is happening. I do enjoy the scale of battles that SYWZ offers though because it feels like a true all out war in their battles. It is nice to see that the author can handle both small personal battles and the large big scale ones while always keep the level of detail high and good excitement.

          • Robin

And most impressing, he doesn’t leave anyone out. He always manages to keep every character and its special abilities in mind and integrate them into the action. And it is really hard to combine so many different characters into a coherent battle!

          • Jonathan Hurd

It truly is. I just keep thinking back to Dragon Ball Z in which you start with all these colorful characters and then step by step as you add in more and more Super Sayian. Eventually anyone without Sayian blood becomes completely and utterly obsolete.

          • Robin

Exactly. Most authors simply skim out the number of characters to make it easier. But not in this case. Go, author! 😉

      • RyokoZero

Yep… that’s what I gathered from this battle.

      • Evilage

That makes the pig really OP doesnt it?
if they kill one of the demon lord and obtain one of their magic crystals ,imagine the strength of their squad

        • Cyrs

Yea the pig is definitely OP…but it should be noted, that the crystals are probably good for one use only. At least I think that’s how it’s suppose to go…otherwise the pig would be more powerful than the MC.

          • Robin

The pig eats the crystals so they clearly are one use items. This is why Lin Xin cried when he learned of its new ability. 😉
The piggy’s power all depends on the way it is used in a fight. If used cleverly and at the right time, it can be powerful, or a total flop.

        • Majk

The demon lords get extra strength from their pillars so it wouldn’t be as powerful as a real one (also I believe that It wouldn’t be able to recreate the full strength of the lords even without their pillars)

  • Robin

But there is one thing I find a little strange. During the training period of the DHSs the Alliance did everything to ensure their safety. Especially Haochen and Cai’er were under protection and supervision of powerful elders. Although I clearly understand that the Alliance can’t afford to keep watch over them forever, to cut them loose so suddenly and let them run free without any safety measure strikes me as a litte to sudden a change. Grandpa Han, Yang and grandpa Sheng Yue will have puppies if they learn of all the dangers these children faced.
I would have guessed that there would still be someone in the background to have an eye on them. But the development of the story seems to tell us otherwise.

    • Jonathan Hurd

I think the point is that they understand the kids need to grow on their own without relying on others to save them to become truly self sufficient and powerful. Only through managing to overcome difficult and dangerous situations will they develop further. Another part of it would probably be the sheer lack of powerhouses in the human side. They might just not have anyone to spare to babysit them. I mean considering the overwhelming difference in human and demon forces sparing even one 7th step practitioner would be a huge loss of forces on the front line. Add to that all the adults have also emphasized how important Demon Hunt Squads. Self preservation has been emphasized pretty hard. The big point of being taught by a 7th step Guardian Knight with that much experience was they were instructed in proper decision making and safety. I think the biggest aspect though goes back to the lessons of Asura Ye. You cannot always fight easy fights or equal level opponents. Its important for these young Demon Hunters to learn how to overcome the odds for themselves. If they rely on someones coming to save them in the future this could stunt their growth and cause them to become complacent believing they do not have to solve the problem themselves.

      • Robin

Naturally you are right. The most important lesson that they can only rely on themselves and their teammates must be learned without a safety net. In this regard it totally makes sense. And I guess the two DHSs going on such a mission is really a hardcore unusual situation. They just skipped some steps on the way up. Usually, the limited radius of action of newly formed DHSs would keep them out of the most severe danger. In the end the training period SHOULD have taught them how to judge their own abilities and the level of danger they could face without risking their lifes.
Maybe this only irritates me because I thought that they would keep better watch on their golden eggs. Although it is really better to let them experience more interesting things and epic battles. But maybe they will think about a change of the rules once the two squads come back and show them the result of their avdenture. Maybe keeping some limitations on how fast a newly formed DHS can raise their grade, or which combination of DHSs are allowed to take which missions. Because any other DHS than the 21st would long have died on this trip. And even with the emphasis on preservation, the Alliance still doesn’t want to pointlessly slaughter their painstakingly raised geniuses.

        • Jonathan Hurd

To be fair you have to keep in mind all the coincidences that led up to allowing them to accept this mission. The first one was that the Command Center greatly underestimated the power inside of the cave. They thought it was a cave with potentially some gems and just wanted someone to scout it. They later found out that there was a high chance of a super powered magical beast and the demons are looking into it as well. That knowledge only came in after LHC had accepted and left. Add to that HQ thought they were teaming up with another General Grade Demon Hunt Squad and not a newbie soldier grade one. I think the assumption was that they would be going with a much more experienced group. All in all this is definitely not a normal situation for DHS’s. To also be fair nobody could ever predict a situation like the Yue Ye caravan happening. That is basically out of anyone’s expectations. All in all the danger has been amazing, but a lot of it came from circumstances nobody could predict and a gigantic stupid error on HQ’s side.

          • Robin

Yes, I remember. And it has had to be like this or we wouldn’t get progress, since the common missions would have been excessively boring for our little monsters.
But it will surely be a warning for the Alliance that their system is not failproof. Similar to their change of the rules regarding the choice of members during the tournament, and the Priest Temple’s leader’s comment on how they probably have to change the rules because there have been too many abnormal competitors this year, maybe this will be another area Haochen and company will influence the system and open the eyes of the Alliance’s leaders. Coincidences over coincidences may have led to this outcome but it still endangers the future of the Alliance. If by any chance they lost one or more of their fighters with a special physique, their chances of winning, or even resisting against the demons dwindle tremendously.

          • Jonathan Hurd

Yeah the alliance’s organizers really screwed up this one. I think the big thing is they will be much more careful before they list Unknown danger level missions after this and they better give LHC the full reward or else we are going to have some words. The biggest danger though that did assault them came from being caught with the Yue Ye’s caravan. That could of happened no matter where they were trying to head into demon territory. I feel like two more normal General Grade squads would probably not be able to kill as many demons as LHC’s group, but they could probably bust out and run since they weren’t really what the demons were after. The main reason the 7th step guys got involved in that one was because they sensed a stupid amount of danger and they had lost 12 sixth step guys they sent to stop it. That danger was directly going to stop them getting the food they needed and threatened even them. I don’t think they would have bothered chasing people running away since the main goal was they desperately needed food.

          • Robin

It is hard to judge how strong common general grade DHSs are but I guess they are comparable to the 21st in power. At least the stronger ones. 😉
They would have had a chance to flee or fight, deending on the situation. The biggest problem of our team was that they were still inexperienced, especially regarding teamwork in a big group. The most dangerous situation was while the 4th squad nearly went amok, pulling the members from the 21st with them into their sucidal attack. But I guess after this mission they will be failproof in this regard. But the fight against the fiends won’t be that easy and surely come with severe costs.
If the Alliance doesn’t reward them in full there will be more than words! They wholly earned it in blood and sweat. And yeah, they will be extra careful while distributing missions in the future. The DHSs which managed to fulfill this king grade mission will gain legendary status among the others if their success will be made public. XD

          • Jonathan Hurd

I think the way to understand a more common General Grade DHS would be a little stronger than LHC’s team after replacing LHC and Cai’er with non monsters. I say a little stronger since they would normally have much more experience and have accomplished some missions so they wouldn’t make such a rookie mistake like the 4th Soldier Grade Squad. Considering though the cost of becoming a General Grade squad is all your members are 5th step at least and you have earned 10k contribution points and gotten 6 secret abilities at lest to supplement yourself. With two squads like that I don’t think they would get away unscathed but more than likely could get out alive especially with two normal priests.

I totally agree. Without rookie mistakes and them all being above the 5th step AND having two able priests, it would be a little better. And assuming they would have spent a lot longer on missions before raising their rank, they would not only have more experience but also better equipment and tactical understanding. I think they would have better equipment because to gain the needed experience and credit points to level up, they would have fought many more harsh battles and would have had to rely on their equipment to survive. So they surely would have invested some of the CPs on paving the way to success. Normal equipment would tire out under heavy and lenghty use. The more intensely they fought, the faster they would need to renew their equipment.
We don’t know for sure, but I doubt the 4th squad is that well equipped. And at least some of them are below the 5th step. So they are a major handicap evening out the OP MCs.

I think everyone in the 4th Soldier Grade is 5th step except two of them. I keep forgetting which ones aren’t. I know the priest is and I think the warrior is… The big thing to remember for LHC’s team was they were desperate to get those secret abilities because of their priest’s lack of healing spells. Only through upgrading were they able to get Han Yu some healing spells to try and compensate. So yeah I definitely agree other DHS’s would have already invested in powering up before ranking up. Especially considering that most DHS’s would not be able to get all its members to 5th step so soon after forming. Its just LHC’s is a bit unique.

          • Robin

A bit unique is quite the understatement. 😛
It is fun to discuss with you. I also forgot who isn’t 5th step yet but there are some of them. But I guess they will gain a really good power upgrade from this mission. They invested some CPs but gained even more of them plus experience and power. I think they got themselves a really good deal. Oh yeah! Not to forget their free correction of their warped characters. (Excluding Li Xin.) And this alone is priceless.

I enjoy discussing the topics with you as well, hehe. Its fun to think about and analyze stories for me, especially with how complex this story is. It also helps pass the time while we wait for the next chapter and it makes me happy to guess right. I gotta agree the 4th Soldier DHS really did luck out. They get an up close look at LHC’s leadership, more contribution points than they can shake a stick at, and get to be a part of some amazing battles, hehe.

          • Robin

Yeah, especially since I have to spent all my time on an important paper right now, working all night and day in front of the screen. I like theorizing and our discussion is a nice little change of pace. 😉
Yang Wenzhao will be green of envy when he notices the change in the 4th squad. He was already bitter because he only made the third place of the competition and Haochen overtook him with lightning speed. I doubt that he and his squad even made half the progress they did so far. If the 4th squad does things right, maybe they will be able to up their grade soon after returning. What do you think?
By the way, I don’t dislike Yang Wenzhao. He clearly has a bad position where he is beaten down all the time, and sometimes even made the laughingstock, invoking pity. But he still is honorable and keeps the standards of a knight high. Maybe his squad would have been a better choice regarding discipline, although I am not so sure if he would have had agreed to join Haochen, if not for the little summoner. But maybe he would have hindered the mission especially because of her. And this would have been a different kind of infighting altogether…
The next chaps will bring a lot of new input for discussions. And I think today might be the day of release. ^.^

          • Jonathan Hurd

I think Yang might be green with envy less for the benefits the 4th soldier grade got and more because he could of gone on a long journey with his fiance, :D. I have to say I like the depth of character of the knights we have met. LHC has had a pretty good effect on both Han Yu and Yang Wenzhao. He has shown them what truly living up to the ten standards is all about. One thing I like about this story is that a lot of the characters are flawed, but very humanly so. It honestly would have been so easy to make Yang Wenzhao a one dimensional bully character. but instead you get to understand him and his better moments. Though I do kind of enjoy how he keeps getting knocked down a notch.

          • Robin

Well, suffering builds character, right? Maybe he will turn into the perfect knight in the end after suffering through all these miseries. Somehow I can easily imagine him as the future leader of the Alliance, especially since he isn’t perfect but still keeps on the right track. But I can also imagine him holding Haochen accountable for the danger he put his fiance in, even after explicitely asking him to keep her safe. But not in all honesty, more in the overbearing way of a concerned big brother, because in my opinion he behaves more like a big onii than a fiance. 😉
Regarding flawed characters. Do you also enjoy the constant bickering between the heroic elders whenever more than two come together? The elders of the Alliance behave more like children than any of the new recruits in the DHS competition! It is simply too hilarious. Keeps you wondering how humanity survived all this time. ^.^°

          • Jonathan Hurd

I do have to say I kind of enjoy the competitiveness of all the different temples and the temple heads. I think the trick that has kept them working together thus far is knowing when is the time to compete and when is the time to come together. I think Rivalry and competition has a very positive effect on growth so that is important, but at the end of the day the final goal of keeping humanity alive against the demons should never be forgotten. That was why the Knight Temple gave up on punishing Cai’er because she is just that important to fighting the demons. Now I wouldn’t doubt that if Cai’er had seriously handicapped Yang Whenzhao things would be different because no one wants to show they are willing to be walked on.

I do have to say though I was laughing my butt off when LHC stood up to Old Sheng Yue and even all the hall masters were about to wet themselves from fear of Sheng Yue’s wrath. Even people as strong as the eighth step were not willing to stand up to him and here is this little kid of the fifth step sticking to his word even in the face of Sheng Yue’s anger, hehe.

          • Robin

Oh yes! I love the scene! Or when Haochen wakes up after encountering the three DGs and greets Sheng Yue with a “great-grandfather”. There are many scenes that simply make you cry tears of laughter. How Sheng Yue beats Han Quian after he made some comments about Haochen and Cai’er. Simply priceless!
I agree. They are a family. Fighting among themselves as long as it has no consequences for the greater good, but as soon as there is an outside danger, they stand shoulder to shoulder and close ranks against the enemy. Haochen grasped this principle perfectly or he wouldn’t have covered for Cai’er’s parents. They surely needed a lesson about cooperation and the fragile balance between the Temples. Even Cai’er respected the limits, as you pointed out, even in her anger she injured but not maimed, punished but didn’t go above a certain point.

hmm did anyone notice there where 3 sponsored chapters earlier and now its gone but no chapters has been out yet?

    • Robin

Maybe the loading of your page was delayed. This happens sometimes that the number of the sponsored chaps is only corrected after you press f5. Toto has finished releasing all the sponsored chaps on wednesday so now the count is at zero.

      • rey

ohh sorry about that i thought 250 was sponsored chapter haha

        • Robin

No problem. No, so far it isn’t. It will probably be a standard chap, released on saturday or sunday. Or earlier if Toto is really hardworking and generous.
