Shen Yin Wang Zuo, Chapter 242

Shen Yin Wang Zuo, Chapter 242: Eternal Rest (II)

Although Long Haochen was still hesitating, Haoyue’s suggestion immediately rose the flames of desire in his heart. At least for the moment, Haoyue was able to suppress the specters residing around the outside of the tower. Just taking a glance at the situation of this tower shouldn’t be too dangerous right?

“Alright, let’s take a look then.”

“Hou, hou, hou.” Three bellows were simultaneously produced from Haoyue’s three heads, and charging at a great speed, he carried Long Haochen toward the direction of the tower.

As the radiance released from Haoyue’s soul approached them, the great amount of specters in his path scattered, and not a single one dared come into contact. Haoyue held his head high, swiping his glance all around without restraint. The distance of a several hundred meters was covered in a split second with Haoyue’s charge. The entrance of the tower could not be seen at all from the place where Long Haochen was previously standing, but as they ran to its base, a three meters high gate appeared in front of the man and the beast.

Seeing that gate, the first impression Long Haochen had was that it was a construction built by humans.

The gate was ash-gray in color and wasn’t decorated in any carving or design, so it couldn’t be related to the higher elven tribes, and furthermore, on the upper part of the gate were words written on a wide stone.

These words were written in a language that was very similar to the current human tongue, only, the structure of the letters was more complex. Nevertheless, Long Haochen managed to vaguely recognize them. The words written on it were ‘Eternal Rest’.

Although this gate was simple and not very tall, while standing in front of it, its imposing presence directly assaulted their senses.

Haoyue’s six eyes let out a dazzling brilliance. Advancing to the side, he didn’t head to the gate’s location but instead, ran to its side. Little Green opened his mouth wide, letting out a powerful tornado that pushed the gate open before charging at it to open it completely.

“Pop.” The gate opened quite easily: against all expectation, this mere gust of wind was enough to open it noiselessly.

However, in the instant it opened, a rich dark-grey-colored aura spread in the air, covering the entire room with an extremely pure energy; it was an energy that no living creature would be willing to come into contact, one that carried the essence of death.

As if they saw a most terrifying existence, the surrounding specters frantically scattered in all direction, and the hissing sounds that were not supposed to break out at this timing suddenly erupted.

Long Haochen made haste to release a Holy Mantle, enveloping Haoyue and himself inside, and putting his whole strength into resisting the sound waves carried by the terrible hissing sounds.

The dark-grey aura spread to the outside of the tower, rapidly dispersing in the air. Out of the dozens of surrounding specters that were nearest to the tower, the slowest ones were engulfed by it, immediately turning into nothingness as they left grey ashes on the ground. Clearly, that pure aura of death was something these specters absolutely could not resist. The aura of this tower in itself had an enticing power they were unable to resist.

As Long Haochen’s brain was working at a high speed in analyzing the situation of the surroundings, Haoyue already resumed moving, and in a flash, he entered the tower.

An eerie scene happened: in the instant Haoyue stepped into the tower, the hissing sounds outside unexpectedly came to an end and stopped hindering Long Haochen. However, what followed was an indescribable scene, causing Long Haochen to feel a deathly stillness down to his pores.

A large hall appeared before his eyes, but it didn’t carry the dark image he expected. The hall that appeared in his view was entirely ash-gray-colored and was far wider than what the tower seemed to look like from the outside.

In all directions, large pillars were supporting a thirty meters high dome, and many ash-gray-colored lights had appeared before their views, twisting in the air, and Long Haochen was unable to clearly see in front of him because of this colorful background. On the sides, eighty-four pillars stood erect in a straight line, whereas in front of them was an indistinct something.

The purple soul energy surrounding Haoyue’s body vanished rapidly and he slowly stepped forward. It was clear that he was extremely cautious..

Long Haochen firmly held his Holy Spirit Sword, which was a bit drenched in sweat. After entering in this world filled with a deathly atmosphere, he felt great changes in his body. First, the recovery of the spiritual energy in his body had unexpectedly increased severalfold compared to the time they were outside of the tower. That was to say, the elemental energy in this tower was a lot richer than outside. And strangely, the Light Elemental Fairy Yating didn’t dare to come out of Long Haochen’s body, as if this place contained an extremely dangerous existence…

“Welcome to the ‘Eternal Rest’.”

Just as Long Haochen was examining the tower, an aged voice suddenly rang in the empty space of the tower.

Long Haochen instantly shivered in surprise, and Haoyue suddenly stopped advancing.

The voice was transmitting from all direction, “The fact that you managed to reach my Tower of Eternity is proof that you are an outstanding necromancer with a strength at the sixth step or above. Kid, you are very lucky to have made it into my world of deathly arts.

The Tower of Eternity is the crystallization of the knowledge I gathered throughout my thousand years of life. As long as you can keep going forward, passing one test after another, and finally reach the top, you will inherit my legacy, and the deathly arts will once again arise in this world, granting death to the hypocrites of the Radiant Church.

Step forward, brave man, my child. You are the first necromancer to have ever stepped into the Tower of Eternity, and also my only successor. You will have to face trials and dangers, but your life won’t be threatened. Of course, this is on the premise that you manage to pass my first trial, otherwise, I will consider that you don’t have the qualifications to carry on my legacy. As long as you pass this trial, this route will be wide open to you, and I will guard you by your side forever, until the time you finally manage to reach my side that is.

Everything you have just heard was the last recording I left before my death. When you leave, the ‘Eternal Rest’ as well as all the legacy I left behind will be closed to everyone, and only with my keepsake will you be able to enter again. I will be in the tower, waiting for your arrival, for when you will be ready to learn the Saint Deathly Magic Arts and become the disciple of this Slumbering Calamity, Elux.”

Outside of the Desolate Hissing Cavern.

Having watched Haoyue’s disappearance helplessly, the members of the two Demon Hunt Squads couldn’t help but be in a state of panic.

Li Xin declared, astounded, “How is it that Haochen didn’t come back, but it was instead Haoyue that disappeared?”, voicing out the concern everyone had.

Ever since they entered in the demon territory, Long Haochen was the entire team’s pillar and currently, the group wasn’t in good shape. After Haoyue disappeared, these youths from the Temple Alliance’s elite younger generation were panic-stricken.

Lin Xin tightened his eyebrows, “Haochen said that he would be able to teleport back at Haoyue’s side in times of danger, but now, if Haoyue was the one teleported, there can be only one explanation. That is he encountered some danger, and it was danger that didn’t even allow him to have the time to teleport back.

This won’t do, we have to immediately go rescue Captain.” As he said so, he planned on heading in the direction of the cavern. It wasn’t only him, but Wang Yuanyuan and Sima Xian had the same reaction.

But at this time, a figure appeared, blocking the entrance of the cave.

“Don’t lose your head. None of you shall go.” Cai’er’s cold voice sounded out, causing everyone else to look blank.

If this action was from someone else, they would probably get beaten from the members of the 21st general grade Demon Hunt Squad immediately, but if this person was Cai’er, the situation was completely different. Who was Cai’er? She was simply the closest person to Long Haochen! If Long Haochen met with danger, how could she not feel anxious?

Cai’er coldly glanced at the panicked group, calmly declaring, “From now onwards, I will temporarily take over Haochen’s role of captain. Before he returns, everything shall be done accordingly to my orders. Any objection?”

Luc Xi reacted sternly, “Cai’er, now is not the time to argue about who will command, but about Haochen’s safety. Don’t tell me we shouldn’t head out to save him?” During their journey, he had been in total admiration for Long Haochen, and he also knew clearly that if there was one person in the team that could lead everyone back safe and sound, that person was Long Haochen.

Cai’er coldly swept her glance over him, “Seeing that I’m not panicking, what are you panicking for? Haochen and Haoyue share a blood contract, and this contract makes the two of them the same as one. Even if Haochen lost the ability to come back, in the case he felt that Long Haochen was in a dangerous situation, Haoyue would have been able to teleport him back from his end. But Haoyue didn’t do that, and instead chose to teleport to him. Do you know what that means? It means that Haoyue believed that the danger Haochen was put in was something in his scope of control, that he was enough to help him handle it.

More importantly, the fact that the hissing sounds suddenly became irregular only a few hours after Haochen entered, implies that he already arrived in the core region of the Desolate Hissing Cavern. If he took such a long time to manage this, how long do you think we’d need to join his side? If something happened to any of us on the way, won’t the situation become even worse when he comes back? What we should do now is to calm ourselves, not to head out in disorder. Therefore, let’s keep resting here, until he gets back. Since he’s our captain, we should trust him and believe that he will be able to come back safe and sound no matter what.”

It could be said that this explanation from Cai’er immediately calmed down the whole team.

Until now, Long Haochen had been the whole team’s dominant figure, the brain as well as the core of the team. At the moment that he wasn’t there, Cai’er spoke up as the one who understood him the most. Though, she appeared even more imposing and intimidating than Long Haochen. Her cold voice gave her words an image of absolute confidence.

As top-rate talents, Long Haochen and Cai’er both had an inherent commanding stature. It was only that Cai’er had willingly chosen to serve as a prop for Long Haochen that she went unnoticed.

Luc Xi immediately looked at Sima Xian, revealing heartfelt admiration. At this time, his only thought was that it would have been great if the priest who belonged to this team with two pillars was him.

Thanks for the chapter! 🙂 Never expected ‘Eternal Rest’ to be the name of a place, I totally thought someone would die

    • Austin Griffin

I totally thought the same thing. But necromancy? Wtf!!!!!!! I wonder what will happen next. Will he learn necromancy or will he walk away?

      • Jonathan Hurd

To be fair Necromancy doesn’t have to be disturbing the dead. You could use it to commune with the dead and help them find peace, or you could allow them to see their loved ones a final time and say their last goodbyes. To me power is not evil it is just how you use it.

        • Luke Confidential

Or help them overcome the enemies which cut short their lives to begin with =P

          • Robin

When you gain a power and make it your own, you can sometimes merge it with different techniques. As you say it depends on how you use a power and when someone can use necromancy for a good purpose and turn it into something positive, it is Haochen. 😀

          • Luke Confidential

You have to take a look at the etymology here.
Hao chen literally translates into Good Morning, Long Hao Chen is Good Morning Dragon [word order shifted for language purposes.]

He is the light that shines into the darkness, the radiance that turns night into day. Dragon of the Dawn.

It stands to reason some of his power might have its origins in the night, though that’s not how he’d use his might.

[Keep in mind in the preview LHC seems somewhat excited or at least interested regarding the Necromancy vocation.]

          • Robin

I didn’t know about the exact meaning of his name but it makes sense. Of course he would be exited. It seems that he heard about necromancy in history but it never appeared, exactly like the Scion of Light. It is fascinating.

But on that note, I am really curious what the Alliance will say if they get this recording gem. ^^

          • Luke Confidential

I would be sadpanda if the alliance doesn’t get this recording gem.

Sure this raid might have plenty of rewards for our squads, but they still deserve those 200,000 contribution points.

          • Robin

Yes, they do. Too bad that they didn’t record the epic battle against the demon army. The shock of the Alliance people would be a lot of fun.
But it will raise many interesting questions about the newly formed but already legendarily strong DHS when they see what Haochen found and how he single-handedly fulfilled the mission of exploring the cavern.

          • Luke Confidential

He might have done it single handedly but he sure as hell didn’t do it single-headedly.

Four heads are better than one.

          • Luke Confidential

Accidentally hit reply when I was intended to edit, will be deleting this comment post haste

          • Robin

            Nice pun! And really fitting.
Haoyue with his humanlike intelligence and instinct is a great help. It is a good thing that he can’t really talk so far, although that may come later, but he can already converse with Haochen clearly. And he has three exceptionally good heads. ^^

          • Luke Confidential

As for the epic battle against the Demon Army?

I’m pretty sure their contribution point devices also record the creature that provided the contribution points.

The reaction when the higher-ups see all the demons they killed [including the thousands that were turned to stone that they finished off] is going to be priceless.

          • Robin

I don’t know about them recording the demon’s breeds. It would be a lot of data collected without much gain. But I won’t rule it out since so far we always got a list of the killed demons. And it would be helpful for the supervisors, especially with the new DHSs. The massive amount of contribution points gained would on their own already shock everyone.
            This will be great!

          • Luke Confidential

I’m pretty sure in that battle alone these two squads got over 10,000 combined points.

          • Robin

Hard to tell, but I am not so sure about it. There were some numbers mentioned but I think they were not htat high. But the gains are still gigantic.

    • Christoph

It’s ironic that a place where he can learn to raise the dead and disturb their rest would be called Eternal Rest.

    Thanks for the chapter

  • lordcattank

thank you very much for the chapter

  • ShelfCloud

Thank you very much for the chapter!

So did I understand that correctly? Haochen has to pass the first test now and then will later be able to come back to take the other ones? And in the meantime nobody else will be able to enter and the person that recorded everything “will be guarding his side”? That’s at least how it sounded to me. That he wil not learn necromancy immediately but later when he has passed all tests.

That seems interesting. It is just that necromancy is not something I would associate with the Scion of LIght.

  • ShelfCloud

    • Xias

Nope, entering the tower just showed that a talented “necromancer” would deserve the opportunity to take the trial of Elux.
So the first trial is still to come.

Furthermore as it is a trial for a necromancer and LHC is pretty much the opposite of the necromancer´s desire namely the Scion of Light that bears the hope and future of the Radiant Church it is likely that he can´t pass the trial.

If anything I think it´ll be Haoyue who can pass that trial and obtain that necromancer´s legacy.
He then might be able to share it with LHC through their blood pact.

      • Luke Confidential

You guys are saying the Scion of Light can’t pass a necromancer’s trial, but think about it.

Which element is MORE associated with death and the afterlife than Light?

LHC might not be your traditional necromancer, but he’s got his foot in the door to becoming a type of necromancer.

Envision a necromancer who conjures forth the willing and self-aware souls of long lost heroes to do battle with evil for the sake of humanity.

        • ShelfCloud

I am really unsure about that part. I would never say that Haochen is absouletely not able to pass the trials. As you descirbed the author can easily put it that way that necromancy is something Haochen is fitted to use. Furthermore Haochen is totally OP to begin with….

But as Xias mentioned above Haoyue is also there. So maybe he will be the one to pass or they both will as a team.

          • Jonathan Hurd

I don’t personally think Hao Yue will be the one to learn it. It seems like the way the message is setup it is for a human to take on the legacy. Also considering the way Hao Yue has learned spells thus far seems to be from remembering them through his soul and not taught them. I am not sure Hao Yue can be taught new spells all things considered since he is a magical beast even if he is a bit different than the average magical beast.

I would also say that we do lack some information about the requirements to be a necromancer. I mean as far as we know currently the only job that requires a certain elemental affinity is being a Knight or a priest. We also have not really heard of a human who has the shadow affinity so it might not be possible for humans to have that to begin with.

All in all, I’m just praying that LHC learns necromancy because that would be freaking awesome to put on his resume of badassness. He can go around and say I am a Guardian Knight, Retribution Knight, and a Death Knight! As one person put it. First freaking Death Knight confirmed 😀

          • Kaarme

Seems to me that the quickest way for the OP MC to become even more OP would be to gain another elemental affinity in addition to the extreme Light affinity he has now. I don’t see why simply having Shadow affinity would even break his purity. It’s surely more a matter of attitude and values than technical capabilities. He has very deadly destructive powers as it is with Light. With Shadow they should at least double against anything living. It would be bloody cool if he then gained another spirit in addition to Yating, and it would be from the other side.

Not sure how Cai’er, the assassin, would feel if Haochen acquired death magic, though.

        • Robin

My first thought was exactly that it isn’t necessarily Haochen that is refered to by the voice. He is not at the sixth step and as far as we knowpurely of the light essence. But next I was reminded of our theories that Haochen may be a half demon. If part of his heritage is demonic in nature t might explain the possibility of him being attracted by the dark/ necromancer arts.
In case Haochen is meant, he would not refuse the chance to learn something that may let him understand his enemy better. But he would not like to use it or learn it in wholly if not in absolute need. This closed tower only he can enter after succeeding in the first trial sounds like the perfect emergency plan if he later on needs a fast power boost against an overly mighty enemy, for example the DGE.

If Haoyue is the one recognized as the necromancer it would make sense that his former world changed in this way. His necromancer powers would match the undead and skeletons we encountered (which I found a strange interlude in a world that doesn’t include rising the dead from the basic setting). If he has the power to control the dead, or undead if you like, in his final form, it would explain their fear of him.
It is just a theory but both possibilities have a certain appeal. Haochen and Haoyue are connected via the blood contract so one shares the power of the other. We already know that Haoyue has something demonic. If he would gain some necromancer power he would be the perfect counterpart for Haochen’s existence as the Scion of Light. Although, Hochen impersonating both, extreme light and darkness would be really cool. ^^

        • Xias

The soul´s of heroes would not remain in the world but leave after their death as they know that staying would be against the natural law and might cause harm to the world.
So there are no “willing” souls because only souls with negative emotions remain behind such as those filled with hatred, jealousy, envy, etc.

Also “necromancy” has not directly to do with souls but instead with with ressurecting dead corpses into undead beings or using the corpses to summon undead beings.

Even if a soul is involved that soul is not “free” but imprisoned into a corpse by necromancy and as such has no free will either.

          • Luke Confidential

It remains to be seen how the author is going to deal with this. Meet us in the discussion for chapter 243

      • ShelfCloud

I also understood it the way that he still has to pass the first trial, But after this he will not have to take the the other ones immediately but can come back later for them. That was the part I was not clear about.

Since he has to take the first trial now he has to pass it. It will be interesting to see if this will be accomoplished by Haochen, Haoyue or a combination of both.

  • Evilage

It would be nice if he learns necromacy and summons and army to kill demons

    Thank you for the chapter!

  • Majk

So now he will be Long Haochen: SCION OF LIGHT, BLOOD BROTHER OF AUSTIN GRIFFIN AND THE ONLY DEATH KNIGHT IN EXISTENCE MUHAHAHAHAHA.

Or he will decide not to learn it now since this may be seen as a heretic art and he will come back later when he will be in some kind of crisis that will force him to become stronger quickly (asuming that he will not be able to leave until he clears the first test and obtein his keepsake).

    • Jonathan Hurd

I have to admit this turned out cooler than I could ever have imagined, Lol. To be fair though having a decent understanding of Necromancy would definitely help when he goes back to Hao Yue’s world since it is filled with only the undead. I would say knowledge itself is not really evil, it is how you use said knowledge that decides. I think LHC will pass the first trial because I don’t think they’ll let him out if he doesn’t currently then probably ask his teacher about becoming a Necromancer. I don’t think with LHC’s current power that he can actually pass the final trials especially considering the voice assumed he would be a 6th steppe necromancer.

      • Luke Confidential

Don’t forget how close LHC is to the 6th step and how his Spiritual Energy Cavities are beginning to form.

With the additional stimulation of these trials he just may break through to the 6th step.

Though if he pauses to meditate between floors his crew is going to go nuts [and probably meet another team sent by the Temple Alliance to recover them.]

        • Jonathan Hurd

Getting to the 6th step with all the stimulus this cave has given him is definitely possible. It seems to me like he will be coming back here and probably training inside at some future date. I think LHC won’t stay longer after he gets past the first trial for now though, since he wouldn’t want to needlessly worry his teammates. He’s also technically completed the mission assigned since he now knows what is inside the cave, who made it, what makes the howling, and that the demons will not be able to enter anymore.

      • Indream

I don’t agree with you about necromancy. It’s not necesary evil, but it is DARK arts, so aptitude required(just like LHC have crazy aptitude and understanding for light since he is scion of light). Not all necros are evil, they can be neutral, but they can’t be good, since good person don’t have what it takes. So if LHC going to become necro it’s major blunder in my opinion. Through it’s seems like it, i got feeling that in this arc LHC getting some big power ups after the mission suddenly became S class.

        • Luke Confidential

Indream, I have to ask you, what element is more associated with the hereafter than Light?

Dark might be equally associated with it, but it does not beat Light out.

Necromancy doesn’t have to be dark arts, it could also be Light art calling forth fallen heroes of good, souls who wish to pick up the battles they left behind.

Heck, healing magic in dungeons and dragons used to be classed as Necromancy prior to 3rd edition.

          • Robin

I agree that necromancy is not consequently a dark art. There are many interpretations of the term that include mediums using the power of ghosts/departed souls for their purposes or different flavors. But in most of the interpretations there is a dark tint to the vocation of necromancer.

          • Indream

That’s what i mean by necros can be neutral.

          • Indream

Well, i don’t think rising undead or riping life from living could be “good” arts, thats why i said it dark, it may not be necesary dark element, but art itself is kinda dark, and good person learning… About healing – if you can take life energy from someone, why can’t you transer it? =)
P.S. Seems like author have idea similar to yours.

      • Rhiannon Sturtevant

I’m pretty sure it’ll Hao Yue who will become a necromancer, not Long Hao Chen

  • VanillaCustardPie

Does anyone know how far the raw version of the light novel is at?

    • Luke Confidential

      It is finished!

      • Small

Oh! How many chapters are there in total?

        • ShelfCloud

If I am not wrong it should be 308 parts with 877 chapters (calculated with the help of Excel and Copy&Paste).

          • That’s approximately it.

          • Small

Yes! So we’re not even half way through? HURRAY!

Sounds like it’s bigger on the inside.

  • siva

Thank you …. so awesome can’t wait to see next cwhat happens next …

  • Indream

Don’t tell me he going to get necromancer as sub job. I was ok with MC kinda op, who can go against enemies stronger then him, but creating broken technique while walking, really? And if he now goin to get “dark” vocation, while his soul is so “pure”, that put angels to shame… *facepalm*

    • Luke Confidential

Read the next chapter and join us in the comments there.

  • bladerain

Speaking of which, when Hao Chen transforms, he kinda looks like a Necromancer right? Perhaps he can use his skills like so then or Hao Yue could.

    • Robin

And how does the typical necromancer look like? 😉

      • Luke Confidential

Either old and wrinkly in robes, or young and cute with a dress/skirt and a scythe.

        • Robin

Haochen in a skirt/robe? Don’t destroy my nice picture! Although it surely would be cute. ^^

          • Jonathan Hurd

Hes already cute enough to be a girl, wearing a robe means we finally get a picture of him wearing a dress.:D

          • Robin

Haochen in a dress and with a scythe… Somehow i can’t wrap my mind around that.

          • Jonathan Hurd

Damnit now I want to see a picture of that T.T…

    • Indream

Nah, he look like some sort of dark knight, to be precise DRK from FFXIV. They protect, those who really need protection(in their opinion, they don’t protect anyone and if someone need to get retribution, they don’t care about laws or authorities and ofcourse they don’t hesitate to kill. When in first appearence, his eyes were desribed, matched well with those.

  • Robin

I loved the scene where Cai’er takes control. She finally stepped out of the shadow and talked to the others, which she usually only rarely does. She is really cool and composed. And she understood a lot more about Haochen and Haoyue as I would have given her credit for based on her attitude towards Haoyue in the beginning.
